New to the GX/ off-road scene. You mentioned putting the transfer case back in high. Excuse the noob question but should I be doing that for any normal/ highway driving? Haven’t done any off roading yet and have always just left the transfer case in neutral driving around. Apologies for the newb question! Awesome video!

Hey welcome! No your transfer case was not in Neutral when you are driving around. It just kinda looks like that. To answer your question: Yea, you are always in High during normal driving. Low range is for low speed crawling, Neutral disconnects all engine power from the drivetrain (for towing, mostly) and High is for normal driving.

Yeah but what happens when your just gassed up your going 80 down the highway trying to drink your coffee and eat your donut and the semi next to you has a blowout and causes you to make a high speed maneuver? They don’t put sway bars on every vehicle just because its fun there is a huge safety feature you’re not addressing

Great video. I just finished this job and I have one extra tip for the top nut on the shock, which ultimately took a couple hours to sort out for the first one, while all the rest of the job took no more than 20 min per side. When the top nut is inevitably rusted in place and just won't break free, no matter how hard you try, and with much-o releaser oil, and trying every tool you have, you can use a nut splitter, available for about $18 at the local hardware store, to break the nut and then turn it off. A torch or cutter isn't really an option on the left hand side, because the shock is not far from the gas tank and just below the fuel filler line - not a good place for flame or sparks. You'll also need a 1/2" impact wrench and a 3/4" impact socket to do this. (1) Slip the nut splitter up over the nut, with the cutter bit vertical and on a flat side of the nut - you'll need a light and a mirror to see whether the cutter is approximately vertical and on the nut. (2)Using a socket and a standard ratchet wrench on the nut splitter, tighten the cutter bit hard against the offending nut until you can't really turn it anymore. This will hold it in place for the impact wrench (3)Put the impact wrench on the nut splitter on its highest torque setting and let er rip. If the nut splitter works its way up off the nut before it has finished cutting through the nut, then start at step 1 again and make sure the cutter bit is lined up with the cut so far. (4)once the nut splitter has cut through the nut, squirt releaser oil into the cut in the nut and wait a few minutes (5)using whatever size wrench will fit snuggly on the now deformed and broken nut, turn it off. Both of mine came off easily after being split. As noted, the rest of the job will take about 20min following the steps in the video.

If you have the A/C on, the engine seems to kinda overcompensate for the extra load of the A/C compressor and can give some extra torque. Just press the brake harder to stay still. This condition is heightened if you’re in low-range. Shorter gearing multiplies torque.

Hey, checkout Tinkerers adventure. He did a lot of tests on swaybars on toyota Ifs and found that removing just the rear sway bar actually limits your travel overall. He found that it's better to just have it on. But if you remove the front sway bar, you actually see an increase in both front and rear sway bar travel.

I see you’re trying to do your best with the knowledge that you have. although a lockwasher would never work like that there’s a reason it’s on the nut and not the bolt. And if you didn’t cut all your air lines and took your time, I have took these units off for a while now and replaced them and I have sold them up to $400. To individuals that would like to keep their airbags. That can’t afford the high price of a new ones.

This unit has been flawless. You just need to make sure you have a non-nav GX. Nav GXs have to consider other options

This is an excellent video. It shows the full build, the smaller components in addition to the main pieces, and you explain why. Two things. I will not fix the flexible solar panel. I am in Canada, and the ability to place and move the panel and chase the sun is important. Second, when using double-sided tape, remove the protective paper tape after you have secured one side and roll the paper tape off as you roll out the flexible panel. Love this, thank you

Everything is good! Drives great around town, barely ever drops out of overdrive going uphill on the highway, and gives a nice low crawl ratio. As for breakage, it all comes down to the thing between your ears. As you saw in the video, had I kept my foot in it a bit more, I probably would have made it up, as Earl demonstrated. But I felt like that could have made me do a nasty bounce and shock load the driveline. Earl has an 8.2 so he maybe had more confidence to send it. But I could have been a bit too conservative. Either way, I knew when to back off and played it safe. Some people don’t want to do that. Ok, those people should definitely spend 10k on a 9.5” diamond axle. As for me, the cost-benefit was there and I drive more conservative. But I still can make it up some super tough trails that way.
@lexus_offroad_adventures
@lexus_offroad_adventures Ай бұрын
I have said in the comments on a previous video why I’m more comfortable tackling the hard stuff with fresh gears: over time the backlash on high-mileage 8” diffs gets way out of spec. It increases the shock load you put on the gears at the slightest hint of bouncing. Just getting a pinion/carrier bearing preload refresh can help reduce this risk. Getting a locker, so you don’t have to use momentum as much to get up obstacles also helps. Shortening the ratio so you have more control over wheel speed also helps. These 3 factors I think enable me to run the stock diff on 35” tires with all the weight
