Coach Taylor: I don't know when I'll have another team like this BYU women's cross country would go on to win 2 of the next 5 national championships, placing second in 1 more of those years. Absolute legend of a coach!

Good question! National high school 10,000 meter record holder Bill McChesney could not run all summer before his senior year due to injury, then won the Oregon State Championships! He said it hurt like hell but that the uphill sand dune runs that his coach Harry Johnson had them do the fall before that taught him a level of mental toughness that he drew upon heavily at that state championship. Age 44, I ran 8 minutes per mile for 18 miles, then had a career ending running injury. After eight years of no running, I got out of breath jogging 20 STEPS! After a few months of jogging, my first track workout was at 8:00/mile for 1/16th of a mile at a time & I was out of breath with a heart rate that was high for me.

No chance in hell for Grant!!! Obviously I’m not anywhere near Grants level, but I (mostly) stopped running for 3 MONTHS, and then ran an 8k, and I ran more than 5 minutes slower than I had the year before! I say mostly, because I was still running for about 20 mins per weak during those 3 months. Then I took an additional 2 months with NO running, and ran a mile - 1 min 8 seconds slower then what I could have run only 5 months before. I also was about the same weight - if I was heavier, it was less than 5 lbs. During both periods I was lifting, but all strength training, absolutely no conditioning or endurance work in the gym. It’s insane how fast you lose running fitness when you quit running / doing cardio work. Approx 1 min per mile after 5 months. Even if Grant loses it at half the rate I did, he is done for.

IMO the biggest factor would be if you give him a few runs in the week leading up to the race or not. I don't think he completely loses his running fitness in 1 year, but going from 0 running to a race with absolutely no running before is going to be a big factor even without waiting for a year. Like, imagine you take even 1 month off from running and then the very first run you do is an all out 10k. Ouch.

There's no way he could beat a sub-30 runner and it's not even close. The fitness flies off faster than people think, even for elites
@CarlFredrik-uo1cu2 күн бұрын
It would be really interesting to see an experiment like that. I don't think any serious elite runner would try that, as that is a waste of potential, it would be so stupid to sacrifice a couple of your prime years (to recover back to your pre-hiatus shape would propably take a long time) But it would be interesting to see. What difference would one month with zero training do? 6 months? One year? I wonder what Kipchoge could do in the marathon with one year without a single training session (let's say he's allowed to walk, but no more than 5km per day) I think fitness declines pretty fast when you don't train, but it's obviously not a linear curve. There's also something called "muscle memory" I guess there's probably some "endurance/stamina -memory" as well. I think if an elite runner goes one year without training, and then get one month where they can work out, they would probably be able to do some really solid results.

On the 1st day? No. He would be very short of the necessary enzymes and glycogen and mitochondria. 3 months after resuming training? Guaranteed. He already has all of the hard-to-build cardiovascular, connective tissue, and myonuclei attributes that take a long time to build, and those don’t really go away with detraining. (At least not in just a year.)

In my opinion, the runner who won the race knew that it was going to be close. At the end, he knew Mantz was coming up so he veered to his left and even put his arm out a little bit, blocking Mantz from having a chance to pass. Probably interference! The runner even put his arms up after he crossed the line, like I didn't do anything wrong. Is what he did legal? Why isn't it getting talked about anywhere?
@HandelandJ10 күн бұрын
Good stuff!!! But I think Jon’s order is the right order 100%…. Also, Idt the record is going. Wind gusts near 30mph and wind chills around 20 degrees is too cold! And they’ll be running straight into the wind between miles 8-11, when the pacers are all done and the pack will be smaller / non-existent so they’ll be going straight into the wind. I’ll be quite surprised if they get it considering the conditions.

I'm a huge Clayton Young stan but I don't think there's any chance he breaks the American record, unless conditions are so favorable that a bunch of guys break it. His strength isn't really his speed speed, it's that he's extremely sticky, and then comes on hard late. I think the smart money is probably the record won't fall, but I'd love to see one of Mantz or Klecker do it.
@asecmimosas45368 күн бұрын
@@dpw181 it's really weird to reply to this after I was correct and he didn't break it. You'll not find a bigger Clayton Young fan but the reality is that he hasn't run better than 28:18 on the track and 28:31 on the roads for the 10k, and that really flies up against this recent trend that we have of speed runners gaining endurance through shoes. He can get faster, he is actually actively getting faster if you look at his strava, and the key with his style is that very small incremental gains in speed will have huge payoffs for him over the marathon distance. But will he ever be a HM record holder? Unrealistic. He's a different kind of runner, and to some extent that's part of the charm, because in some ways he's a dying breed of marathoner.
