This trilogy gives a reader a lot to think about. The most fascinating concept to think about, how could humankind ever expect to encounter kindness in a more advanced species when we ourselves are the most cruel species towards most co-existing species’ of our own planet. We destroy the very nature that gave birth to us. We create whole species’ into existence only to torture, imprison and kill them for their milk, eggs and flesh, while depriving them from their right of natural evolution. Humankind is a destructive force to nature, evolution and life itself. And still, one of humankind’s greatest missions is to seek out and find new life among the stars. Why? If they can’t even cherish life on their own planet.

Come, join the ever more impatient masses just WAITING for a real update on book 2’s release. I was one of the unlucky ones who fell in love with this book almost a decade ago. Then year after year after year rolls by, and we hear updates occasionally from the author about how the books are nearly done, just have some re-writes and edits, etc… That was about 7 years ago… I’ve pretty much conceded the fact that there will never be a book 2. Let ALONE a finish to the story… The author says he has “chronic fatigue syndrome”, and says this is why he’s unable to write… I don’t know enough about the guy, or the “syndrome”, to comment on either… But, best of luck to you and us all if you decide to join the line!

So I have read the books from book outlet should have a dot or a line marked somewhere along the pages? According to their website anyway. Is there any markings on your books and is it big/noticeable?

End of watch was the best in the trilogy in my opinion. Really loved that he involved gaming via the hand helds as I’m a big gamer and it’s something he’s not really explored beofre. Also the element of the supernatural of this book is what made me love it even more. And to say bill hodges has no character in this book? Wow did you read the same book? Lol It’s no where near his best work but people need to remember he’s pushing close to 80 years old now and the fact that his motor is still running and he still is pushing out literature is astounding.

Paper book vs audio version? I did both. The paper version is definitely best; easier to follow who is speaking (and flip back a page if necessary). Overall a very good book.

And I darken sounds so bad as plot and politics. If it tries to emulate the complex politics at that time between Valahia and the Ottoman Empire, and the heir problems, it seems like it fails. This is a pisspoor understanding of why Vlahs (and the rest of the Balkans) hated the Ottoman Empire. Also, Mehmet as heir? He probably isn't an only son considering the harem, he'll have to kill his other brothers to become Sultan. Actually, it doesn't seem to have much to do with actual history, the author is completely uninformed, they didn't do any research. Also, Lada? Wtf name is that? In Romanian "lada" means "the crate/box/chest", totally not a name. There's not really a Romanian female version of the name Vlad. Vlada is not an alternative. Overall: As a Romanian, I'm offended. This sounds like a westerner trying to appropriate and fetishize Romanian history into a bad alternate fantasy history. I'm tired of westerners sh*tting on the name of Vlad III the Impaler and the history of Romania. As a Romanian, I wouldn't recommend this one. This is just bad and has a love triangle.

The issues of characterization you cite do get fleshed out much more in the next two books in the series.and they are better rounded out. The fantasy elements can be a little off-putting for people who don’t like fantasy. I don’t get the sometimes mentioned lack of characterization or prose problems…I like Reynolds for these. He does a great job. I do find, especially with the third book, that the speech patterns of some of the characters on the ships sound a little like a Dickens novel. Especially with the audiobook

The Xenophobia of the Dark Forrest concept fits the cultural history of China. The Fermi paradox is false if you understand that electromagnetic communications is Passé with the understanding of supraluminal physics.

no. you must read closer. the girls were raised on an orbital station. there are no worlds around the 'old sun' which is a variable that destroys the previous civilizations that cannot cope. all the orbitals in the system are artifacts. the ion drives and photon sails are all sub-FTL. the 'swallowers' are mini black holes. the overarching setting is an artificial system around an old variable star on the galaxy's far halo. i have not read the next two book and just became aware of them. i was puzzled about all the YA stuff too but came to realize that the humans are in a state of retrogression and have no idea how they got there. huge mysteries loom.

Friend, I'm late to the party but this was a very enjoyable listen that I'm sure I will probably have to go over more than once to actually absorb -I really enjoyed this quick-fire look at a single author. The dark tower is almost certainly my favorite King book, despite being almost totally marred by all the others following it. It's such a well formed and tantalising piece, more reminiscent of Gene Wolfe's ouevre, that if the main conceit of the structure (No spoilers) had occurred within this first volume it might have been something truly "of the first water."

Good review. I'm about half way through. Liu tends to wander off to far away places in this book before coming back to the point of the book. I find myself getting confused as to which character he is talking about , probably because of the un-familiar names. Not interested in a hard copy.
