Personally, deep jungle was one of my favorite worlds. I really liked that we got into an argument with Donald and separated from them, we did get some solid character moments and there was tension about Donald and Sora meeting again. Hanging out with Tarzan was fun, the monkey heartless generally gave for Munny. The only thing is that Clayton was more noticeably flat compared the other villains. I think they only animated his face for a cutscene briefly and didn't have much presence. But in spite of how frustrating the stage was, I always just thought "Sora isn't a wildman and doesn't know his way around the jungle so it's unintentionally immersive in that way."

21:12 SMT actually did the monster recruiting mechanic first. Megami Tensei Digital Devil Story came out in 87 and it featured the Demon Negotiation system.

Well it actually pre dates that 1987 and then hack was in 1984 but the producer's of pokemon have actually stated thier primary influence was dq5 so it isn't a stretch in the slightest

@ DQ5 came out in September of 1992 and SMT1 came out in October of 1992. Not really sure what you mean by 1987 and 1984, neither of those dates have anything to do with DQ5 from what I can tell.

@@aes6474 Sorry I didn't specify that Megami Tensei (1987) (the og) has a monster taming mechanic, and a game from 1984 called Hack has a similar mechanic although the monster's aren't party members but you can capture them and train them to use special abilities and even feed them, both of them pre date dq5 but dq5 was the primary influence behind pokemon.

Just finished the game last night via snes fan translation and I had pretty much the same experience. I know exactly what you mean when you say Klazz is the DQ hero, and I similarly can’t explain why. I think I felt the same intangible thing that you were feeling when you played through the game.

A game that touched me as much as Kingdom Hearts if not more is The World Ends With You. I was hitting my edgy teenager phase and Neku struck a cord with me. Long story made short, his whole arc made it so I didn't shut myself away from everyone and everything quite as much as I would have, and it made me, back then, the type of person to be willing to have a conversation with anyone even if I didn't really like them. The World Ends With You is a game that I don't think anything will ever top for me, and it's tragic how poorly it's sequel was received as I think it's message could hit people who need it in the same way the original game did for me.

My guy, This is hands down one of the best videos I've watched, Seriously, I can relate so much its crazy. I remember in 02 seeing the trailers for KH and me and my brother were infatuated with it, We wanted to play it so bad but didn't own a PS2 yet. We were always a console or two behind, Years later around 05-06, Right around the time PS3 was bout to release, We finally got a PS2, And one of the first games we got was KH1, I was about 10-11 yrs old & We had just moved out of the country into a new house in town, As the years go by, I tend to forget alot of things that happened in my life during those days, But the memories that i CAN recall from that period of my life are incredibly vivid, And funny enough KH has alot to do with that. I remember watching my brother play this game and just being enamored with it. Visually it was one of the prettiest games i had ever seen at the time, And the soundtrack, Man the soundtrack blew my mind, So beautifully melancholic & Catchy. My brother would wake up super early and turn on the PS2 to play KH in the living room, And as soon as i heard that menu music and the dink-click sounds of him going into save game, I'd get up, Eyes barely open, And hobble into the living room to watch him play. We got REALLY into the story, This was the first game where we truly wanted to see what happened next, For me it was like watching a movie, Following Sora on his journey from Destiny Islands thru all the different worlds was truly a grand experience, I related alot to Sora and i always felt Riku was similar to my brother. Going thru their journey, I could not wait to see the conclusion. I just wanted everyone to be reunited in the end. I'll never forget my brother doing that final boss fight against Ansem, Taking what felt like hours to beat, Rooting him on and hoping he could pull it off, And when he finally beat the game, It was such a great feeling man...And plus the way it set up the ending had me praying for a sequel, I immediately began my own playthrough later that day lol. A year later we got KH2, And once again, I watched my brother play thru it, He made it to the end of the game and the game freaking froze up on one of the final cutscenes, Didn't even get to see the credits. Turns out the disc was scratched, No matter how much we cleaned it & Played thru the end, It would freeze on the same part. We never got to see how the game truly ended, But it was still an epic ride from beginning to end. Everytime I reflect back on my youth, I instantly think back to Kingdom Hearts. Man, Those times were truly special.

For a moment i thought it was going to be mindless Misa Misa slander but I'm glad to have been proved wrong. You are right by the way, it dragged on too long and got too convoluted and stopped being interesting. But Misa wasn't the proboem, the main guys were. For a show that touts them as being both highly intelligent, the longer it dragged on and the more mistakes they made the less convincing the show was, that they were truoy intelligent. At some point we were told they were clever more than shown that they were. They weren't masterminds using everyone as pawns, fhey were buffoons who constantly analyzed one another, obsessively, to the point where I was waiting for them to start hate-kissing. That's not intelligence that's social anxiety. And Misa was actually an interesting addition, however her character and backstory greatly diminished the rest of the show by being far more compelling than anything else that happened. Her backstory was far more interesting than anything L or Light did and I found myself way more into that story than those two guys that just circled one another for dozens of episodes without ever really doing anything. Their shit felt like filler in the show that's literally about them. It was the same issue i have with shows like Dragonball Z. They wont directly get to the thing. They have to stall to pad out the enormous episode orders they have to fill so they need to charge uo their attacks for half an episode, before actually firing a mid beam, then a stronger one, then a stronger one instead of going all out straight off the bat and avoiding all the exertion and damage that comes with a prolinged fight. These guys keot circling around each other even though they knew what they had to do. Misa actually got shit done. It made them look pathetic. Even before she appeared she was making moves. She was infinitely more fascinating than a guy who just sits in his room all day eating sweets and a law student playing basketball and whatever.

Not necessarily canon, but in the manga adaptation by Shiro Amano, the ship actually runs on happy faces. They have a few scenes inside the ship where Donald tells Sora they'll be stranded with no propulsion if he broods too much. ... There's also a scene where Cid pops up on screen and asks them to fax him the Ansem Report page they found with the fax machine he set up when they let him install the nav gummi, lol

This seems to be the minority opinion, even by the devs who threw it away 9 months after the original release, but I prefer the original controls. L2/R2 to spin the camera when needed, right stick to navigate the menus without having to deal with uncomfortable claw-hand, plus _two_ buttons to switch left _and_ right between targets. You barely get any vertical camera control anyway with the newer controls. ...Though this SNES kid sure does appreciate the option to choose "menu cancel" and "menu confirm" buttons in the newer releases of the millions-of-dollars budget video game. Like, some guy somewhere in 1997 decided that the bottom face button should be "confirm" for Americans only, going against the SNES standard that had been there for half a decade, and then 25+ years later everyone has decided that "Western gamers prefer to confirm with the bottom face button" based on the first guy's decision. They'll even let you rebind the entirety of a game's control scheme, _except_ confirm and cancel. 😭

It's 2006. I'm 10 years old. I'm at my cousin's house, and while we live in a small middle eastern country, they had 2 years in Canada and returned with a brand new ps2 and a few games, kh1 is one of them. I know it's already late, but for us this was new. It's summer vacation, we are 6 cousins. Everyone plays outside, I go to the tv room, turn on the ps2 and enter kh1. I'm lost. English is not my native language, I try to understand. The only thing I somehow manage to get is "Don't be afraid, and don't forget, you are the one who will open the door" It's almost like a part of my origin story. This moment, was so significant in my life that I'm almost not sure I was the same person I am today without it. My other cousins continued playing outside, I spent almost 4 whole days playing the game. Upgrading my gummy ship. Two years later I have my own ps2. My mom buys me kh1 for my birthday. I spend all summer vacation playing it. A year later a friend of the family brought me a burned copy of kh2. I'm lost again, I'm happy. It's 2019, kh3 is out. I finished it. I'm not so happy with the story, my English is good now. But I realize this will always be a part of me. I tattoo a kingdom key on my leg, it's there forever. 2024 Life is so damn hard. Honestly maybe too hard. I stumbled upon this video. I don't dare to finish it. Kingdom Hearts will always matter, if you had the privilege to grow up with it, it's simply a part of you, whether you like it or not. I'm 28 today. I never once wanted to die, but sometimes I yearn for those summer days sitting in front of a tv, ac turned on. I'm Sora. I learned that it means Sky in Japanese. I'm so happy because I love the sky.

My mother spent her entire paycheck on my 5th birthday for the old FAT ps2 and a copy of Kingdom Hearts. The year prior my father had passed away from a drug overdose, and my mom and I bonded over the game. Taking turns playing, and finally getting to the end of the game together. And that final cut-scene where Kairi and Sora are separated again hurt my by then 6 year old heart, and my mom asked me why I was crying and I just said "They're gone just like daddy." and she just looked my Grandma in the eyes then me and just held me and told me she loved me, and that they'll see each other again, and I'll see dad again. She went on to overdose the next year, and never got to see Kingdom Hearts 2, and so much more going at the young age of 24. But they live within my heart, and I hope they got to experience the game she loved as I played it. I don't know why I'm writing all this, but that opening essay got me feeling a lot of things. This game is so special to me... and so many others it seems. Thanks mom for choosing such a great game to get me started in finding a place of comfort in a hectic world. Bless up, and thanks to whoever read all of this.

This was your first game? That's wild. It came out when I was like... 6 or 7 i think? But all the time before that was filled with disney movies and squaresoft games. It wasn't my first game, (Ocarina of Time has that spot for me) but it was one that really fealt like it was made for me. Not just me the consumer, like it really fealt like it was made for *me* specifically. It was like a fever dream when I went to blockbuster video and saw... that cover art. Specifically the pre-greatest hits box. You play as a goofy looking kid with spiky hair, you get to go hang out on an island and fight tidus and selfie and wakka. I was only child until I was almost 10, so riku fealt like the big brother I never had, and I looked up to him. Then to watch him fall to darkness. To take literal irl years to even find him after the island. (Started at morning as a kid, so the mid-game was really hard.) The scene that brought me to tears more than any other was when sora is dragging riku away from the final xemnas fight, and riku tells sora that *he* was jealous of his younger, weaker, dumber friend the whole time. Right around the age when I was starting to realize that the *adults* didn't really have life all figured out either. It helped me learn that it doesn't matter if you're the best, the strongest, fastest, smartest, etc. It matters if you make it through whatever you face, no matter what, and share smiles with your friends along the way. Just do your best, it's all you ever have to do.

About the monster taming mechanic: i kinda actually really like how hard it is to capture the monsters, i can understand the frustration of wanting one and not being able to capture it because it requires hours of grinding, but really the fact it was hard and out of my choice realistically, made me value a lot more the monsters that i recruited, even if i didn't really wanted a mudraker named Clayton, i grew found of him and it stayed in my party until the end of the game fighting against Nimzo, every single player will have a unique experience with the battle system because ultimately people will have totally different monsters asking to join them, and I really appreciate that even if not perfect I still think it's for the best, it totally helps to imerse you in the hero's narrative With present context we may perceive this mechanic as a Taming Monster one but really in 1992 that wasn't a established genre, it's not about you recruiting them, they are the ones that choose the main protagonist, they want to be a part of your history, and it's up to the the player to accept their desire and stay with them, that's the feeling I think they intent to convey, monsters are not essentially evil "I'm not a bad slime"
