Did all years of the RSDs have the same gear ratio?
@leoberiding
@leoberiding 20 күн бұрын
As far as I know they were all the same. The RSD12 gear ratio is about 10% different from the RS11. Was a not an issue untill I added the PS-2 wich added speed ( cruise ) control.

Hello I love your Model RS 11 & RSD 12 . I've been a fan of these ALCO diesel locomotives since I was a little boy. I have O scale but my mainline is Ho & a touch of N scale. These Union Pacific units are beautiful on your tracks. Happy model railroading I enjoyed watching this.

Thanks for the nice note ! I am fascinated by Alco diesels and the 2-51 prime mover. Love model and toy trains of all scales. Did N-scale with my fathers help back in the late sixties and early seventies. It was in its infancy then. I am amazed at how nice it is now.

Great video. BTW, you were not complaining, you were simply informing us. I have two models of UP's 9000 series 4-12-2 locos, one Lionel, the other MTH. In physical detailing, MTH wipes the floor with Lionel, even down to a working 3rd cylinder, separately applied piping on the boiler, anti-derail chains on the tender trucks, opening window panes and operating roof hatches. The only feature Lionel has over my PS2 9010 is whistle steam. Both are beautiful models but the MTH model (as a model and not electronics) is superior. I have to say I was surprised to hear of your "tech" issues with your MTH Berkshire, so sorry to hear about this. I've never had any issues with my MTH locomotives. My problems have been with older TMCC tech where the electronics simply fail. I really like Legacy and I really like PS3 but other than Lionel's superior sound, PS3 offers more features such as independent volume controlling, chuff rate selection and so much more. Legacy does not. If your bell is too loud, on PS3 - not a problem, with Legacy, you can only turn down the general volume which means everything has to be made quieter. Perhaps we could take both MTH and Lionel models and convert them all to Blunami and run them in DCC. It can be done, check out Sid's Trains here on youtube. Anyways, thank again for your video.

thanks for the nice note. I was also surprised to have had problems with thr Berkshire. Before covid I would have told you MTH is darn near perfect. in my experience MTH electronics have been far more reliable than Lionel. But I have mostly diesels.

Leo nicely done video and great layout, and nicely narrated! The MTH UP FM H10-44 caught my eye, I'm a bit of a FM nut as I used to see H-24-66 Trainmasters frequently on the Southern Pacific Commute between San Francisco and San Jose when I was young ('64 - '75). The Trainmasters were all retired by '75. SP also used FM switchers similar to your UP model up in San Francisco, and I think they were FM H-12-44, but I'm not completely sure which ones they were. In order to see them I'd have to beg my Dad to take a train ride from Palo Alto to SF to watch them switching in the SP yard. Happy railroading!

Thanks for the wonderfiul note. I also realy like FM railroad diesels. Being a diesel engine guy ther OP engine fascinates me. It is still made for ships and stationary power. An extremely efficient engine. I have some 1:48 models of the 6 cylinder - 12 piston engine. Can see them on my video of the RS-11 engines. I have viewed a great U-tube video of the SP passenger trains with FM's out in front, several times now.

These are great, mine ran fine, but I need cruise control for the grades on my 0-42 lines. Also love the features and sounds in Proto 2 and 3. Just watched your video on the Weaver C-630. I had one in UP. wished I would have kept it. Would have been a worthy unit to convert to PS-2. They do PULL ! I had lashed it up with Lionel SD40, with 12 powered wheels and magna traction. The E-unit flipped out on a switch and it went into reverse. The Weaver c-630 was pulling it like there was no load on the engine !

Lionel produced a legacy version of 1223 as well. The MTH and Lionel versions base their Berk models on the NKP style. More Sand lines and annoyingly for the MTH version the incorrect pilot and whistle. Very handsome model even with its flaws. Great layout as well!

Thanks for the nice note. Even with the few MTH electronis failures I have experienced, thier electronics have been way more reliable and long lasting than the Lionel electronics. I have converted 12 engines now to PS-2. Mostly weaver diesels, and 2 Lionel diesels. The old engines with mechanical E-units and AC motors are infinitely repairable ! Also simpler to diagnose and repair. But, I also love running from a hand held controller. Speed control ( cruise control ) is a real plus for me. no matter how we run them, its fun.

Super. My railroad follows the D&RGW, CB&Q, and the C&S, and is operated with numerous SD-9 locomotives. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N. Edit: When I was young, I lived in Berthoud, Colorado, just north of Denver, right beside the C&S main. Back then a long train, mostly covered hoppers with grain and four bay hopper cars of coal, would usually be powered by an SD-7, SD-45, two GE U28B or U30Bs, and an SD-9, always in that order, northbound or southbound. (Turned, not reversed) A single SD-7 or SD-9 would take care of the rest of the freight and the locals, pulling 7 to 25 or so cars. Going up Berthoud hill or Derby hill, the noise from one SD-7 pulling hard on a long train could actually change your heartbeat, and was quite exciting to watch. The F units and passenger service disappeared around when I was born, (1960) so I never got to see that, but the Great Western Railway of Colorado still had some steamers operating, and their locomotive and car repair shop in Loveland repaired trains from all over the country, so I got to see plenty of foreign road passenger cars, locomotives, and rapid transit cars mixed into the freight trains. Nowadays, they usually use two large AC units pulling and one pushing a long freight, but old-school trains having from five to ten locomotives and over a hundred cars are etched into my memory. My railroad is stuck in 1976, with the most modern locomotives being EMD GP-40 and SD-45 and GE U36B and U36C models, with no Dash two or Dash seven or any safety cab models in sight. 🙂
