The Confident Dancer It's great to see you picking up ballet again. I honestly wish your Twin Sister would get back into it too, & who knows maybe she will when the time comes.

Wow, wow, wow! Kirsten - I love this! Particularly #1 and #2. I took a whole page of notes, and will be incorporating these shifts into all aspects of my ballroom dancing: practice, dance parties, and performances. THANK YOU for this video! P.s. I have shared this with my dance friends. This is so amazing. Wow.

Wow! I am thrilled you did a video specifically on this topic, diving into "how" to visualize. You explaining how we already do this helped me to see where I am already doing it in my life (movies, practicing conversations with people in my head, etc.) I definitely feel like during pirouettes in class, I subconsciously start visualizing myself from my teacher and more experienced students with negativity (even though thankfully my teacher and the other girls are super supportive). So I practiced a bit during this video visualizing pirouettes. I realized during the visualization that I had some confusion about pirouette landings that I didn't realize was there. So in my head I was able to imagine and "feel" the different ways to end. I'm excited to this in class now with some more confidence. And the micro- visualizations too! Your channel is such a gem. I appreciate the love and consistency you put in it. ❤

I really relate to this problem :(. I practice a lot, focusing on details, execution, and textures but when time comes that my heart is racing and im sweating hard gasping for air I forget everything I practiced improving on 😢. It’s disheartening.

This video is SO good. I loved it! There’s so much wisdom in what you shared for people in all sorts of situations. I didn’t think a video about jealousy would be particularly relevant for me but it really encouraged me. Thanks for sharing your light with all of us. You’re a beautiful example of everything you teach. 💜 Ana

I’m blessed to have a teacher that does not have favorites. He will personally correct some people at certain times but mostly he will point of negatives and positives to the whole class as a whole. And yes I’ve also learned to listen to all of the feedback he’s giving to other people and apply it to myself. The thing that helped me the most was realizing that it is a waste of time to compare myself to other dancers because I will never be in their body I can only be in mine. And if I find myself being envious of someone I flip the script and look at them as an inspiration. I’m also an older dancer I probably have 30 years and all the other dancers in my class so I also know at this age I win just by showing up and doing the best that I can. The greatest compliment my teacher gives me is pushing me as hard as he pushes everybody else lol. I know I have his respect because I show up to class all the time I never hide in the back lol I’m upfront and center making mistakes. But I’m doing the best that I can with applying the feedback that I get. And I also know since I’m olderAnd if we’re doing a choreography for a show and of course he’s going to pay more attention to the students who have more capability to do more difficult moves.

tip number 3 is where I had this question/thought- so I last night I was feeling really humbly confident but then this morning I saw the video taken and went....ooof...I really didn't know the steps lol. so I tried to practice but still wasn't getting it and THEN got sucked into the feeling of lack of confidence... so if we feel good and look like were messing up now what...

Maybe just splitting the classes up on different days, one for the beginners and the other for the advanced. I prefer advanced classes by itself because then I level up more. I am in martial arts that is the only reason why I say that. My studio is split from beginner to advanced and then a mixed class together on a day. But that is just an idea.

My daughter does Irish dance which is a competition based sport. We have regionals this weekend. All US regionals are around Thanksgiving. They are called Oireachtas (oh-rock-tus). Nationals is always in early July every year. Worlds is always the week after Easter. The dancers compete 3 dances. A hard shoe and then a soft shoe dance. Then if they "recall" (place in the top 1/2) then they dance a third round called a modern set. There's a panel of judges and it's all subjective too. Anyway the nerves are real right now so thanks for your video!

Thank you for this, really. I had a really bad panic attack during a fast-paced choreography class. Watching this helped me think more realistically and tone down anxiety and negative thoughts that hold me back from actually being present and focused to learn while in class.

Thank you for sharing this. I have been having a really hard time this season because I feel like I am at a point where I have proven myself to my director and yet I feel like he just doesn't put enough stock in my value and my skills and instead has started showing favoritism to another dancer. And it was very discouraging and I admit it put me in that headspace and energy that you mentioned of desperate for approval. While also feeling dejected and like the director just doesn't respect me in the same way as other dancers in the company. But I have been trying to change my perception of myself and own my own opinion of my own dancing like you said. Just cuz my director prefers another dancer over me doesn't mean that I don't have value or that I couldn't do a good job at that role or other roles. And especially after seeing your video I feel much more motivated to just embody the dancer I want to be regardless of what external affirmations I may or may not receive.

I love every bit of this conversation. Thank you both for having it and for sharing so much wisdom and personal experience to illuminate this topic. I know for myself, I took these patterns, and what I thought was the way to be successful, into my next career (after dancing). Even though I eventually had my own business, I still set up some unhealthy environments for myself because it was what I knew. I honestly had no idea I could choose to make things good for ME in my own business until I started receiving coaching and later in my coach training. It was a revelation to realize I could be a human and not just a "product". Bravo for this work you are doing and cheers to many more conversations like this!!

From my experience as a beginner who’s only danced for fun, starting dance in late 30s feels like discovering that I am more than I ever thought possible (which is truly magical). For me, the hardest part is stepping out of my head, where logic tends to take control. I often find myself viewing the choreography as a sequence of steps rather than letting it flow as a movement. So those are amazing tips! Thank you for sharing!
