This video really came out at the right time for me. All the points discussed here tackled every question I've had when considering if it's a good time to leave without regrets. Thank you very much for this.

I have sung tenor in various churches and schools I attended in places where I have lived, and the arrangement was always the men were at the back with bass on the right tenors on the left. In the front, the sopranos were on the right in front of the basses and altos on the left in front of the tenors. Due to health issues, I no longer sing, but the last few years I sang with my church choir, the director started placing me in front in the middle of the alto section. Why would he do that? I never questioned him about it and just went along with it.

Your video is not about how to learn choral music but how to TEACH and or conduct choral music. Not what I am looking for.

Our Orthodox choir has just collapsed 🤦🏻‍♀️ My son is the chanter and leader and they won't listen to him or obey his instructions. He's worked so hard to put the choir together 😢 We've finally given up trying.

1. noone is born a conductor: they are made. No matter how blessed you may see yourself as a conductor, these people are made through training. 2. the rudiments of conducting for orchestras and choirs is exactly the same. 3. Most church choir conductors are critically untrained in even the fundamentals of: -counting in -cutoffs -dynamic expression Unless you do these consistently, you're going to waste a LOT of people's time before you figure it out. A lot of wasted time for what? vanity?

Thank you for this wonderful video. I'm considering staying a choir after twenty-five years as a professional musician, vocalist and actor in musicals, stage and tv. I had directed a choir earlier in my twenties and now i have come full circle. I have been concerned with how to set up the choir for me to have compensation and this video was the perfect honest and conpelling video for me. Thank you and blessings.

Hi Iva, what about a know-it-all accompanist? In the church choir I'm singing the accompanist and the conductor are mother and daughter respectively, and the daughter, who is very young, relies a lot on her mother the accompanist. As I am a conductor myself, with little experience, I have to say, I covered the conductor a couple of times and both times, the accompanist took over the practice, leaving me just basically to wave my hands, having no authority whatsoever. I let her do her thing because I was just stepping in and I am inexperienced (I conduct the congregation but not the choir), but it was uncomfortable. Now, the conductor is getting married and the accompanist told me that her daughter's place will be vacant. I may be picked to step in, but I dread having this lady as my accompanist, as I feel she will take over, and I don't want to be embarrassed in front of 30 choir members. Will your advice on this video apply to accompanists too?

What if you have 1 female in a tenor section? We also have a need for many people to sit down. Consequently the one female tenor has to sit and ends up in the middle of the sopranos and altos....
