Would this lens along with the 100-400 z lens be good for safari? I have the 180-600mm and am finding it heavy for travel thanks

Hey! It depends because I suspect you might find you would prefer a brighter lens for low light situations when the animals are more active. Perfect lens is probably the 400 TC if you can rent it. The 600 pf would be great for daytime distance shooting. For reference, I’ve used the 70-300mm range the most when on safari but I’ve only gone 3-4 times.

@@MatthewRaifman no problem 🙂 Thanks for the info in the video 👍 Well, to be honest, I am pretty much pissed off because of Nikon. We had to wait for how long, 5-6 years for a good ML camera, but the AF is still not reliable enough? Even with the 2 best Nikons (Z8/9)? Well...I think, that the less expensive great lenses is great, but if the AF is not...especially for the fast action/wildlife... I don´t know, maybe it is time to move on...

I agree with your assessment. I have this lens and love it's size and weight but I feel the most important aspect for sharpness with birds in flight is shutter speed and after chasing short eared owls in dull light I found I was pushing ISO too high and the results were disappointing. Gulls in mid-day light however, were no problem at 1/3000th!

Hi. Great channel, in my case 2 days working with my r7 and I am very sad. I bought it to take pictures to dogs, cats, pets... and 0 images sharp even with static subjects... Best results using my canon 5d mark 2(2008) and also with my ricoh gr3. I will try with electronic shutter but I am very close to sell it or send back because it doesnt works regarding sharpness for a portrait for example. It has no sense to go to electronic shutter for that kind of pictures when with one photo you can get the best result in any camera...btw, I got best results using flash! Thanks for your point of view.

Thanks. Yesterday I was triying only with dogs liying down on the floor without movement at 1/800 and I noticed that soft or blurry result. Today with my kids with the same result. More or less same shutter speed 1/500 or 1/800. It was just a portrait... In fact, I tried with 5d and ricoh just to compare because it was very strange and those cameras do not have all these features. I wonder what happened with the best result, it was a portrait 1/200 with flash. Anyway, ricoh gr3 had best result under same conditions...very strange. Not sure if electronic shutter will be the difference, I will tell you tomorrow but as I said, ricoh and 5d do not have all this options and the result are more sharp that this R7 just taken one picture. If I have to go to electronic shutter speed to solve it, we have a problem anyway.

@@MatthewRaifman Matt, Thanks for your reply. The lack of an EVF in fact WAS the main reason I sold it off. Even with the LCD turned up to maximum brightness, one still couldn't see it well enough in daylight to compose with it. As for the Ricoh, I actually rented it for a week about a year ago. Everyone on KZbin seemed to be raving about it. I liked it's super compact size. Really liked the 40mm focal length on the x model. But I had the same issue trying to see the LCD when using it outdoors in daylight. I also found its operation very...quirky (that's being polite). Even trying to rely on that described 'zone AF' approach it seemed incredibly slow and inconsistent or unresponsive. Yes, when you got the focus right, and the exposure wasn't wacky, it could produce a great photo. So, maybe I just didn't figure it out, but it wasn't a good enough experience to go buy it. Still KZbinrs rave about it. So I ask myself, did I just not 'get it' somehow? So, yep, still on the hunt. ;-) Craig

@ yup! I totally get all of that. Sounds like we have a similar read. I use it with single point AF and don't bother with zone. There is nothing like it with that sensor and color science in a truly pocketable form factor...so i've kept it for the moments when I want that casual experience. I don't think you're missing anything, for what it's worth. I think you have a good read on the camera and perhaps it isn't for you. I think the z50ii is worth taking a look at. Bit different experience and size, but very good innards. In the sony ecosystem, the a7cii is excellent and, while the evf isn't the best, it has one. Top notch AF, great sensor, tiny body. Pair that with the 40mm f/2.5 and you have an outstanding combo. Problem is price...looking at about $2500 for the combo.

Thanks for the video which raises an interesting question. Is the limitation of the 600PF for dawn and dusk photography down to the PF technology or simply the limitation of the widest aperture being f/6.3? How would the Z 180-600 compare to the 600PF for these low light conditions? The 180-600 is NOT a PF lens and at 600mm is also an f/6.3 wide open. If you are right, and it is the PF aspect of the lens which creates the limitation then logic dictates the 180-600 could actually give better results in these start / end of day situations. I have a 180-600 but not a 600PF so cannot test this theory. I have seen reviews which compare these lenses in more regular situations and they all state the 180--600 stacks up remarkably well against the 600 PF especially when you take the price difference into consideration in fact, one review stated that the only time the PF really stood out against the 180-600 was shooting back-lit subjects. It is an interesting question.
@MatthewRaifman
@MatthewRaifman 16 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I think the low light limitations are due to the f/6.3 aperture and would not expect much difference between the 600 pf and 180-600 in low light except for static subjects. For static subjects, the PF should perform better because of the lower weight and stabilization allows for longer exposures.
@SwanSycorax
@SwanSycorax 16 күн бұрын
@@MatthewRaifman Thanks, that is what I would have expected. I probably misinterpreted your message which came across as implying the limitation is due to the PF aspect of the lens. I suspect that, in truth, the PF part is only relevant in that it allows Nikon to build a physically small lens and really the inability to perform in really low light scenarios is purely down to the aperture when wide open. I also have the Z 800 PF - a fabulous lens but, I wouldn't expect it to perform well in really low light. As I cannot afford or justify the Z 400 f/2.8 or the Z 600 TC f/4 I have to accept that level of photography is beyond my reach!!!

Nice overview, it seems like a really nice lens if a prime can work for one's purpose. What I miss though, from this and other reviews, is How do you carry it? You mention towards the end that the 200-600 is harder to carry around but with a Blackrapid sports strap that goes over a shoulder and fastens to the screw point on the lens that the foot attaches via (so remove the foot first) like Ryan Mense advices, I can carry it for longer stretches against a hip and it isn't especially tiring and readily available to shoot with. I wouldn't want to keep a tele lens in a bag if I were walking about looking for small birds, yet I've seen or heard zero examples of how to actually carry this lens in the field. I.e what strap attaches where?

Hi Matthew, I have both these lenses as well and like you, the 100-500mm was my first rf lens, I actually bought it prior to owning the body as it became available in Canada before we had bodies after the initial pre-sale. I love the DO lens and it would actually be my choice of lens between these two if I could get maximum frames per second out of it but unfortunately the speed is greatly reduced at least on my body so I always use the 100-500mm which as you've pointed out is incredible but if O had the same framerate, I'd likely mostly use the 400 DO.

I've done a bunch of tests and I personally don't notice how much sharper it is... especially after the picture gets uploaded to social media. I do however notice rolling shutter. Don't get me wrong, I love sharpness. As a wildlife photographer it is so satisfying to see the feathers and the eye in detail when pixel peeping... Sharpness is, in reality, very overrated. It has become way more satisfying to achieve good composition & exposure over anything else. And if those wings look funky because of rolling shutter... it just makes me cry. lol That absolutely ruins the shot, not a slightly less sharp photo. That being said, everybody has different priorities and views on things and maybe that shutter is just too noisy... I get it lol But honestly I believe you have undermined the impact of rolling shutter. Despite me disagreeing with you, thank you for sharing!

As previously mentioned the Nikon files are the best. I think top of the line flagship bodies all do the job and it comes down to lens quality, selection and cost. When I was watching this video, I just knew you were going to get flamed for your ability, not the ability of the camera. :-) Just ignore this internet phenomena of flaming and accept the fact that you are much happier with the A1 and want to go that route. Personally, I sold my Z8 to buy the Z9 and the Z6iii. The newer Nikon autofocus is without doubt highly effective, but to get the best out of it, is more labour intensive than Sony or Canon, often involving handovers. If you don't master the use of the various modes in harmony, it can still be very much hit and miss at times. I have bought my wife a Z6iii for Christmas next week and have already started teaching her the "Nikon" way, using my Z6iii. The first lessons have been all about getting the best from the autofocus and the use of custom buttons to facilitate this. She is coming from the Sony A7iii but much prefers the handling of my Z6iii. Don't be distracted by the opinions of others, do what is right for you. Go with your gut. I have used Nikon for years and have never enjoyed photography as much as I do with my Z9. Whatever you choose, enjoy the challenge of further mastering this incredible art, but be aware that your gut choices can get in the way of sound financial decisions.I have wasted tens of thousands of £'s, chasing the better option. Buy what you want and treat it as an investment. For me, all of the modern bodies are mind boggling compared to when I started 36 years ago, on film, manually focussing. Wildlife and motorsport wasn't easy back then. :-) Good luck!

As you say, maybe it just takes more work to figure out the differences. Alas, I'm just one guy with an opinion.

One, if you can't consistently get perfect in focus shots of moving subjects on the Z8/Z9, that is definitely a you problem. Let's just be clear on that. I have shot the A1, Z8 and Z9, and the difference in stills sports action AF is really not that far apart if you know what you are doing. Sony does do a little better in some situations, while Nikon does a little better in others. But in all cases that's on you. Second, Sony simply doesn't have the glass. Praise the A1/II and A9III and its "superior" capabilities all you want, but where is the 100-300 f2.8, 200-400 f4 TC, 300 f4, 400 f4/4.5, 400 f2.8 TC, 500 f4, 500 f5.6, 600 f4 TC, 600 f5.6/6.3, 800 f5.6, 800 f6.3? Sony is woefully behind in super tele's, and at this point it is a practical certainty that Sony will never catch up to Nikon in glass.
@MatthewRaifman
@MatthewRaifman Ай бұрын
Could be. Absolutely concede that human error is an issue. One the other hand, I’ve shot Nikon for years and have owned the z8 for a years whereas I only recently tried the a1. Would expect bias towards the Nikon bc I’m more familiar. The stepping motors in the 600 pf are also notably different from AF motors in the Sony 400 I was using. Also I’d offer that photographing birds and BIF is quite different from photographing sports (which I’ve also done). But definitely find all these companies have excellent AF. I’m just a guy with my own experiences and perspectives. Understand if you come to a different conclusion and respect that. I care less about the breadth of glass available and more about whether the specific glass I want/use is available. Fortunately, all three big brands have excellent 600 f/4s and 100-400/500s or 200-600s
@KungPowEnterFist
@KungPowEnterFist Ай бұрын
@@MatthewRaifman Again, if you are having trouble getting in focus shots of moving subjects on a Z8 and 600 PF, that is on you. The 600 PF AF is quite fast, and I am sorry if you are struggling with it but the AF speed/tech on that lens is not what is holding you back. I also disagree with your opinion that the 600 PF is not a good low light lens. That capability depends on more than the simple matter of what is the maximum aperture. The quality of the lens elements and the particular optical formula employed makes a huge difference, and what the 600 PF has inside is surprisingly good in this regard as is the 300 PF, 500 PF, and 800 PF. What you learn after you have extensively used these lenses (and the pro level lenses) as I have is that a faster maximum aperture is more about bokeh/subject separation than it is about low light capability. I have shot plenty of f2.8's and f4's from various brands over the decades that produced consistently below average to terrible images (relative to the PF's) in less than good light situations despite those lenses having a faster maximum aperture, much larger, much heavier and much more expensive (implying what's inside "should" be better). I have no reservations shooting any of the Nikon PF's just before the sun comes up or just after it has set. Nonetheless, if I did not own a 400 f2.8 or 600 f4 and was looking to get one or both of those today, the real question is how does one actually decide to not buy the most optically superior 400/600 lens available which BTW also has a built in TC.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that the Z9 autofocus performance is not perfect, not even with the latest updates. And it’s not fault of the gear, the fact that it works so good is remarkable and shouldn’t be understated. It’s a complex beast of a tool, and when wielded expertly can deliver incredibly results. But having such a reductive and, frankly, childish take like “that’s a you problem” makes you no better than those gaming trolls in forums who snort “get gud, loser”. Well done. 👍🏼 you’ve squashed an incredibly nuanced topic into a boring takedown, rife with your personal opinions but no actual analysis.

@@jeffbronson3696appreciate that. At no point did I suggest you can’t get a shot in focus, but I’m an experienced photographer who has been behind the camera for 20 years. I know what I’m doing. I know when I shoot a stationary subject at 40 feet away at a shutter speed of 1/2000s, then image should be sharp. And when I see the focus drift to the wing from the eye, I know it is an autofocus issue. It doesn’t shake me when folks try to make it a me problem. After all, it’s my channel. :-)

@@jeffbronson3696 Nah, the Sony fanboys got that crown. The A1 AF is also not perfect, and I have confirmed many of its AF flaws myself with camera in hand which are well documented at this point. Give it a little time, and the A1II will also have plenty of flaws with its AF, as will the A9III, R1, R5II, and so on, suddenly "discovered" the night before another new camera drops. Someone's gotta make that hamster wheel keep turning, after all. Not that it matters, because if you don't have the glass then you don't have the glass. It doesn't matter how good the camera bodies are when your super tele lineup almost does not exist. But, yeah, Sony fanboys have a real tough time being objective and neutral analysis. There are those that actually claim Sony has the best super tele lineup. How crazy is that. I wish you and the author of this video the best of luck on whatever this is for you. It's your money to burn.

I am wondering if Nikon might put an firmware update to further refine the AF of the Z8. And if indeed, it can be further improved?

I used the A1 extensively for a year, good AF but my worst fears of their build quality were confirmed when I had two issues which needed repair in a year. The Sony support was shockingly bad so I lost confidence and moved away. I shoot fast birds and can’t say there’s a great deal of difference between them Af wise. Never liked the output of the Sony files, think canon and Nikon files are much nicer. Nikon leading the way for wildlife with lenses by a distance too.

I had all of them .. Canon R5, R3 , NIKON Z9 and Sony A1 guess what camera i sold? the A1 and just because Sony lack on the Big lenses.. Nikon is leading with so many choices and Canon in the same league. I use the Z9 with the 500 f4 FL i have the Nikon Z 400 4.5 plus the 600 6.3 PF then for the Canon i have the RF 400 2.8 and the EF 200-400 f4 and is here where Nikon and Canon makes the difference.

@@MatthewRaifman great lenses for sure but you don’t have the vast line up of the other 2 brands.. it’s either the very expensive lenses or the 200-600. Plus the colour and the rendering of the Nikon and Canon for me is a big plus factor! Best regards and thx for sharing your experience as well.

As a Canon and Nikon shooter myself, I'm a bit confused about what exactly you mean. It seems like you're using a mix of mirrorless and adapted DSLR lenses, but none of the lenses you listed cover a range that isn't covered by Sony between the 300mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, 600mm f/4 and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3, plus the two teleconverters. Canon and Nikon do have the edge with several previous generations of DSLR super telephotos, there are definitely a lot more of them and more in good condition, than any Sony/Minolta A mount stuff, but as far as the current lineup, Sony is the only one to actually come out with a dedicated mirrorless 300mm f/2.8 so far. I also love what Nikon's doing with all the PF telephotos, but I also feel like it was out of necessity to win back Nikon DSLR users who might have already switched to another mirrorless system while waiting for Nikon to catch up. Other than the 100-300mm Canon kind of took the easy route of just adapting the optics of their existing top tier supertelephotos to a mirrorless mount, which I can't really fault since it works.

I’m confident the more you use the A1 next to Z8 you’ll find there’s somethings each one does better. I’ve never found one to be significantly better. With swallows and extremely fast BIF I find A1 to separate a bit, then for perch in brush and certain on water situations the pendulum swings the opposite direction. For video af the pendulum is stuck on Nikon. A1ii fixes a majority of the issues. Try the 400/600 TC and I think some of your sequence missing issues will disappear.

If you cant do well with any system today its you, I use Sony and can tell you a few things I admire about Nikon and Canon. Sony tends to be lighter and being 63 years old I value that. Others have different aspects of a brand that they value and in the end its what makes the world go round. I am happy to see Nikon come so far so fast, it will only get better. If you jump ship everytime a brand releases a body that jumps ahead a little it can get very expensive. Seems to me Nikon going through what Sony users experienced when they went the mirrorless route and the performance wasn't as good as the competition, I still made my A7R2 work and have the wallhangers to prove it, ✌✌

No arguments here. I’ve been thrilled with the images I’ve taken on canon, Nikon, and Sony systems. Only reason I’d jump is for a foundational lens purchase like the 600 f/4

How about low light performance Z8 vs A1? Like shooting night landscapes. Which one has less noise with high ISO?
