The snare bark has a huge impact on the tuning & sound! AVH's snare on the 1984 album is the best raw but controlled snare sound he had!! He used a bit of flange too! I think u pretty much nailed his sound for the most part!! It sounds awesome!!

Every time I try, for some reason I get an annoying snare whine, do you know how to fix that? It’s with a ludwig supralite btw
@Bestdrumlessonz Жыл бұрын
A snare whine is from the shell and or skin resonating. You'll need to tune your toms at a pitch that doesn't resonate the snare. Or tune the snare and wires at a pitch and tension so they don't whine. Snare bottom skin is possibly out of tune and that can create and issue. I think there might be snare wires with a casing around them that stop little vibrations that might help. I think it is Rhyhmtech that makes them active snare

Are you doubles "powered"? meaning deliberate hits or are they bounces? or a bit of each? I studied with Todd Sucherman for a 4 hour masterclass and seemed to indicate that his are powered. LOL I'm starting all over again after 25 years learning like a kid again after having had played in a few bands and all that . It's crazy.

And I STILL hit the right stick with the left stick every now & then *frustrating* I need to fix that badly and probably just means slow down until that problem is gone.. my left hand stick drifts sideways a bit and cause this.
@Bestdrumlessonz Жыл бұрын
I do a wrist stroke , let the stick bounce and then a back finger pull.
@n8lbv Жыл бұрын
@@Bestdrumlessonz Not sure what a finger pull is but it sorta sounds like an active stop or keeping it from a 3rd bounce? So the 2nd hit is more passive than active? I think Todd sort of explained it as an active double where he had a choice to either let it bounce or actually hit it twice actively, the latter being his preference but having the option of doing either for a different sound between the two.

@Bestdrumlessonz Жыл бұрын
The draw tool in Cubase is there to change a wave form which has been recorded or imported into Cubase. If you import a wave into Cubase, you can edit it. An image doesn't have any audio. The image that you see in the editor is just a representation of the audio wave you see editing. It doesn't work the other way around. You can't create audio from an image.

I think you did a great job (and explained across the two videos). Among the throngs, I, too, am obsessed, have been since a kid hearing Diver Down and 84, -attending the latter live show. Recently invested the AVH sig drum and just received the equivalent heads and the Ludwig die cast hoop, since well, ain't touching the originals, going into a frame on a wall probably. But will use the drum. After tuning (surely nuanced), the harder part is to follow with mic placements and fussing with numerous plug ins added to Logic. Not gonna buy more plug ins, I hope. Lord-Alge and various reverb options and Abby Road suite better have enough knobs, dammit! Aiming mainly for Diver Down snare sound, take Intruder as an exposed example. But 84 will do too, if it lands there ultimately. If I hit roadblocks, I'm gonna write in again for help.

Im not sure but tje Diver Down album might have been done in the same studio as the early albums. Different console. They used an EMT plate on everything in gratuitous fashion.

In my opinion, 1984 is by far the best snare sound of AVH! I've also obsessed over his tuning & defanitly achieved his snare sound but also tweeked it a bit & experimented with shell sizes since I was 12yrs old & now I'm 48 & have my own unique custom snare sound defanitly inspired by AVH & John Bonham!

If youre going for the very early sound, a reverb with surprisingly long predelay (dotted 1/8th note of the songs bpm) on the toms and snare (listen closely on aint talkin bout love, panned hard right) and otherwise the cymbals and mics are probably the second most important for the overall sound. The kick shouldnt be clickly like most modern kicks, too. It all sounded great here.

@Bestdrumlessonz3 жыл бұрын
I dunno, maybe I think the depth needs to 6.5. And the skin type and snare strainer matter.. His recording snare was a Tama Rosewood 6.5 back in the day. However he gets that sound with almost any snare so I think it's the batter skin, tuning, muffleing and the tree trunks he uses with the rimshots that gets his sound.

Yes, its just in the tuning

As a drummer this is a very interesting idea. Recreating a snare sound of the greats. All I know as a drummer is every artist has his or her own style. The way you tighten the head is for me a constant pentagram formation. To enlighten your sound I use whale wax or candles to scrape onto the rims of my skin rims , this eradicates the need to dampen or muffle the drums. Alex Van Halen used a deep side drum. A side drum is what pipe bands use they dont call it a snare drum. Unless you can see Alex drum you ain't ever gonna work out his sound.
@kevinsheppard23124 жыл бұрын
By far the most in depth tutorial covering his sound. Many people overlook the post-processing they put on the snare. Definitely a crucial part is the snare itself, but I always though it was in the compression and eq. I personally like the ‘Balance’ album snare the best. Good job!
@Bestdrumlessonz4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. My snare sound isn't identical but it has the vibe. The Balance album I think they were using the May micing setup. There's alot of the inside of the drum mic placement tone going on.
