EVERYBODY knows why the scenes are half-voiced, this is NOT a mystery and it's annoying when youtubers complain about it without explaining in any way why it's that way. Each trails game has more text than all 7 Harry Potter books put together, Falcom is a small business that has never, in its history, ever employed more than 70 people. NIS America is also a small business that has never employed more than 200 people. The VAs for trails are all top-tier talents (one of the VAs for Daybreak II's English localization is a guy who is extremely famous and doesn't really need to do trails VA work) and top-tier talent is expensive. So, the choice is, with limited budgets, either half voiced with top tier talent or all voiced with shitty VAs. Falcom and NIS American made a sensible business decision. Trails is NOT a AAA quagmire that youtubers are used to reviewing, it doesn't have a quarter billion dollar budget and a 7 year development cycle. I'm not saying the half voice dialogue doesn't annoy me too, it does, what I am saying is that I understand why that is and I understand it was a business decision brought about by limited resources, and not because of laziness on the part of the developer. You can complain about this all you want, but if you don't take even a second to understand the very obvious reasons why this is, then this is an extremely lazy youtube review video.
@HellFireRPGs
@HellFireRPGs 2 күн бұрын
Here's a logical alternative: more scenes with full voice acting plus more scenes with no voice acting = no scenes with half voice acting. I'm not asking them to voice every scene. What they should be doing is redistributing them so there isn't an on and off mix. AAA or Indie, it doesn't matter, no other game has this issue. This is a design choice, and a poor one at that.
@SuperSupersoda
@SuperSupersoda 2 күн бұрын
@@HellFireRPGs How do you know? Look at the track record of Falcom: they have a track record of making pretty excellent games, all things considered, and getting a new release out every single year. The trails series, in particular, has a meticulous attention to world building and character interaction that shows a high level of aptitude at planning. If their planning in other areas was sloppy, I'd be more willing to write it off as a poor design choice, but Falcom's planning in other areas has been high-level. Which is more likely: that it's a poor design choice or that you don't understand the trade-offs and resource limitations that necessitated the design choice? In other words, what was the actual design objective? Maximizing the total number of fully voiced scenes with the available budget or maximizing the total number of fully voiced lines with the available budget? If maximizing the number of fully voiced scenes would have drastically reduced the number of fully voiced lines, would that trade-off have been worth it? You are entitled to your opinion and I take no issues with that, and I also don't think trails is perfect: Falcom is a very conservative company, historically, and their stubborn unwillingness to change has cost them dearly in the past.
@Chelaxim
@Chelaxim Күн бұрын
@SuperSupersoda Oh poor Falcom there are such a poor small budget studio who were making most of thier games in the 80s on dedicated computers while everybody else was developing on the budget Famicom and when they did develop for consoles it was on CD based systems and fun fact the engglish localization of YS I and II on the Turbo Grafx CD had English voice acting and FMVs before Final Fantasy 1 was released in America. Falcom according to your numbers still has more people there than the 40 people at Monolith Soft who were left over after Nintendo borrowed their workers to do Breath of the Wild. Ted Woosley localized Secret of Mana BY HIMSELF IN 30 DAYS!!! Lumina Tales has been working on the Tales of Destiny 2 fan translation alone inserting all the code,playtesting the game,making HD textures and menus for both the PS2 and PSP versions retrofitting the additional content of the PSP port into the PS2 original for free...And guess what series is getting remasters and guess who could get a cease and desist last second like with the PSP fan translation of Final Fantasy Type 0? If it wasn't for Tales of The Temptest getting fan translated in Secret as an April Fools Joke, Absolute Zero would have been far in thier work for the DS Tales of Hearts fan translation.

@Chelaxim And there are excellent games, such as Chained Echos and Ara Fell, made by one person or a very small team. So what? Everyone has resource limitations, even the big AAA studios who should really have much, much lower resource limitations have them. You're judged on how you solve problems to make the most of what you have, the people who do that well should be given more resources to work with. Falcom rarely disappoints, Monolith soft is also one of the best devs around, consistently excellent. Vanila Ware has a team of life five total people and their last two games have been absolute bangers. My point was resource limitations have to be factored in. Falcom can't afford to voice the entire game with the length of script size a trails game has. I'm fine with the argument that it should be held against them that they haven't solved this problem yet, that's the free market at work, however, I'm also of the opinion that the problem can't really be solved without understand what causes the issue. I'm also of the opinion that just outright complaining about it is unproductive. Falcom knows this is a problem, but this is also what Falcom is.

That is mostly a budget thing, since Trails have more dialogue scenes than a regular Jrpg a fairly small team like Falcom don't have the budget to get them fully voiced. Like despite the amount of voiced line in a trails game is still probably more compared to all the voiced lines in P3 reload.

I definitely agree with some of the criticisms in this video (this is one of my least favorite games in the series and took me forever to play through when it came out), but this game is definitely not filler. Whenever Kai releases in English you’ll see that certain plot points (the rewinds, the conversation before the final boss) are VERY relevant to the overarching story. The one commenter who said this game is like the epilogue of CS2 is right. This game should’ve been trimmed down IMO, but you can’t really have Kai without some of the plot points introduced in this game. Also, as for the filler point as a whole it really in my opinion goes to one of the issues that’s causing divide with this series in general: newer fans don’t care as much about the overall story and just want a good rpg. For example, people who are starting with daybreak and like it don’t see it as “filler” but the people who have been invested in the series up to this point tend to get fed up if any game doesn’t move the overarching plot forward significantly. While I am a long time fan of this series, Daybreak 1 is my favorite game in the series because it appeared to address a lot of my issues with CS before daybreak 2 and a good portion of the first bit of Kai delved right back into those depths smh. But yeah, the issue here in my opinion is that if they want to have a soft reset to start each arc then they really can’t move the plot forward significantly due to having to introduce new characters/character arcs, plot lines, lore, etc. you’ll notice that after they’ve done this, THEN they move the plot forward (Kai is so crazy that it moves the plot forward a good amount and recontextualizes moments going all the way back to Sky SC). This is seen in cold steel with CS3 and 4 in comparison to 1 and 2. I’ve noticed that a lot of people who played cold steel have the complaint about daybreak not bringing the series forward enough, but cold steel had similar complaints back then. Daybreak fans may even have the same complaints in whatever follows this arc (which, if the final game in the arc is at least as good as CS4, in my opinion will be arguably the best arc even with daybreak 2 included). The issue is the overly self indulgent writing. Too much dilly dallying and dancing around plot points. They need to edit these games down and take longer in between releases (2-3 years IMO). These games should be much more concise. Chapter 3 and on of Kai should be the pace most of the games move at this point. The other conundrum is whether falcom is going to keep trying to soft reset or not. Believe it or not, they were very successful with that in cold steel but before cold steel there were only 3 prior English release. There’s too many trails gamws now and they’ve dug their own hole. Not as many people want to jump on at this point and I don’t really blame them. If they stopped using new casts going forward then it could hurt sales (soft resets are good entry points for newer fans) but the series would move forward faster. Honestly not sure how they handle it going forward because I’m seeing the divide in the fanbase really starting to deepen, and a lot of it stems from different expectations around where people started in the series and what they want to see going forward (which is perfectly understandable TBH and if falcom had better editing we would probably have 3 less games in this series)

My biggest problem with Daybreak II was the action component of the battle system. I would prefer hitting an enemy outside combat to trigger a turn based battle with an advantage instead of needing to hit an extra button to engage turn based mode. And this has o be a better Trails starting point then my first Trails game (Cold Steel II) I had played the first Legend of Heroes game when I was a kid, and a couple of games from the Garghav trilogy later and I've never really cared about playing a game series in proper order. So when I found a used copy of Cold Steel II at a local used game store soon after getting my PSP (which I knew was coming and had stockpiled some games for) and my Vita (Which I had no idea was coming) for Christmas 2016 I grabbed it.

Zero party member deaths? You sure about that? I think the SSS might say differently. KeA in particular. And wasn't there similar things going on in CS1, CS3, CS4 and Reverie?
@swordfish1390

No party members die permanently in Cold Steel, and it’s rare that even side characters die. Hell, they don’t even want to kill off the villains. Characters might “die” on-screen, but they always come back in some contrived way, completely trivializing the impact it could have had so that it doesn’t hurt the players’ feelings.
@grahf4215
@grahf4215 3 күн бұрын
@@swordfish1390 Not what I was getting at. Couldn't care less about the fake out deaths as it wasn't what I was referring to. I was being vague on purpose but perhaps I was too vague. It should've been obvious though. KeA literally rewound time during when Trails to Azure would've taken place in the original timeline. That would've taken places during the events of Cold Steel 2 and rewinds time to before Trails from Zero which starts before Cold Steel 1. So many things that should've happened in CS 1 and 2 could've been erased. We see something similar in the prologue to CS1 as it plays out not unlike the prologue to Zero. The SSS and Class 7 get to a certain point only to jump back to Lloyd and Rean at the very beginning. Later on in the game we get back to those places but with other characters involved. While we never see what happens to Class 7 in the prologue, we do know for sure that the SSS outright dies in their prologue. Something similar happened in the prologue to CS3 at Juno Naval Base. Not to mention the ending of CS4 and during Reverie. My point being that he said no main characters ever died and that time rewinding doesn't happen. Yet they have and it does. He said that it wasn't until this game where time rewinding is in as a major part of the story that the main characters die but the first instance we see time rewinding was available, the main characters also died which affected the main characters in another series as well. There's also been other things constantly going on that are similar to the time rewinding. People can change fate or rewrite reality amongst other outlandish things. Rewriting reality...where have I seen that before...oh yeah, in the Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails. Just a thought to tie that game into everything.

These Trails games are run on a factory line. Of course when they are done at this pace it will catch up to them and only die-hards will still love it. They really need to slow down and make other IP because it's a bit ridiculous as many games as they have released, they still haven't come into real prominence like Persona. It shouldn't be hard to overtake Final Fantasy in it's current state without graphics, just have an excellent story and good gameplay. I really couldn't get into the series as it felt too introductory for someone that has seen it all and leans into a lot of tropes that I can read the characters and plot twists through them or narrative direction.

Loved Ys 8 and 9 but it really is time for something new. People crap on triple A for going the CoD/Ubislop way, but then they defend the same behaviour when other companies do it. It's boring no matter how much budget is involved. Maybe the company should brainstorm and think about why they haven't become big yet despite their Trails spam. It seems to work only for the Atelier series because they actually change systems. Just look how well Ryza did when it became an action rpg for this trilogy
@blumiu2426
@blumiu2426 2 күн бұрын
@@Nachtmahr616 Ys is not as overexposed as Trails. Ys was relegated to handheld before they updated it in the last three games on console was again. Trails is the focus while Ys is made to follow along with changes in that series to a degree. Atelier by Gust has somewhat the same issues as they don't change all that much. I'm not actually sure how well they sell, but must be enough or the character design in Ryza gave it a good boost for that two game period. I've no issue that lower development cost means you can do more faster, but it indeed is spent on making annual releases of an IP. If they took their time like Persona and made a new IP, I think that would be more impressive instead of seeing themselves as risk adverse all the same. Older JPRG didn't limit themselves by the artstyle and tropes of anime as heavily as nowadays either. It's my main issue with anime and anime-style projects in you can tell they play it safe in that regard because anime is popular, either archetype casts and generally easy to guess plotline. Trails depending can impress, but I don't think with anything since the earlier Trails in the Sky. I mainly want Adol to go on a solo campaign again so they are forced to do something creative. The thing I want to avoid is as a good deal of anime is fueled by cute. Cute means girls. Falcom has expressed wanting to have Dana the main of Lacrimosa of Dana, but knew he couldn't just shaft Adol. Anime culture is too geared toward making that pivot for sales and claimed Azure Striker Gunvolt that way. I don't want Adol reduced to boring and bland protag in a harem or least interesting in a pairing if they won't let his series stand on it's own some interesting way. He had potential like Zelda I feel, but they never quite innovate on a formula.

This game's plot is weak because this is not really a sequel Trails game as we are used to. This game, along Daybreak 1 feel like an introduction game together. Think of it as if you played Cold Steel 1&2 up to the final fight, before the divertissement, and then you had a different game that had divertissement, the last chapter which is more of an epilogue than a true chapter, and the random dungeon to work as your playground. Add to that some filler to extend this "second" game, and you get Daybreak 2. Falcom usually have introduction and sequel, but this time we got introduction and introduction postgame.
