My favorite thing about L:SSS is that it destroys still ongoing decades long trope - the blonde hair healer character is not some boring bashful confused girl. Jessica is a freaking temperamental mouthy badass with a giant heart and extremely capable in combat.

A bit of a correction: the Lunar games weren't made by Game Arts, but only published by them. They were made by Studio Alex, which was a team that essentially broke off from Falcom in the late 80s. Studio Alex would sue Game Arts for releasing ports of the game they didn't approve of, but would actually lose the case and have to shut down. Game Arts then acquired the Lunar IP and created the travesty Dragonsong.

Just playing a few notes from this game’s soundtrack instantly gives me all the nostalgia chills! I have so much love for this game. And I’m having a blast revisiting it currently on my channel. I do hope that we get more Lunar games some day. Eternal Blue especially deserves some more love. Not to say I wouldn’t jump at the chance for another version of Silver Star. 😉 Great video!

I never played the Complete version of Lunar. I did have Lunar 1 and 2 for the SegaCD. These games and their characters had charm. Lunar 2 Eternal Blue's intro I still adore.

Great game. It's been an age since I played but I sort of remember that the bosses actually scale with your level. The first time I fought the slime boss, he was impossible and I found out that I had actually grinded too much. So I restarted and tried again with lower levels and it was much much easier.

Great review. I think you did an excellent job capturing why this game deserves attention while being fair in conveying its flaws. The grind of unavoidable encounters was definitely real and it can be disappointing if comparing the raw narrative to something like Dragon Quest V as a contemporary of its original release in 1992, but it did do a great job with creating a likeable party of characters. I think the Tales series carries a lot of the Lunar DNA in its later titles. And I definitely had some sweaty boss encounters where i entered with a party with no MP because they sprung it on me when I least expected. Thanks for taking the time to make this.

They just ported it to Android, and it's actually a super competent port. I think it's about $10 on the Play Store and absolutely worth it.

I prefer the Sega CD version. It's definitely easier but, more important, the world feels distinct. Alex not having magic at the start really fed into that. Getting Nash for that first bit let you see and feel, as the player, how helpful magic was and how much of a disadvantage a regular person was. Only elite fighters like Mel and Kyle could even compare.

It's been ages since I got to play Lunar, but the songs have a permanent place on my phone playlist. The translation might bug me more these days, but when I bought it I was just hungry for any anime-related stuff I could find, and there was hardly any in my town. The Playstation was my first console, only purchased because I loved FF7 and FF8, but FF9 wasn't coming to PC. The pawn shop threw in two free games, neither of which I'd heard of before.... Lunar Silver Star Story Complete and Metal Gear Solid. Shortly after, I found another game I'd never heard of, Suikoden II, for sale at another pawn shop and picked it up because I liked the character art. Man, what luck... and what an introduction to console JRPGs!!

Since we are on the subject of working designs and animated openings. Have you ever played Vanguard bandits? That game was revolutionary for me at the time. Never played a game where your decisions mattered and could change the course of the game in those days.

I had the ps1 version and for whatever reason I had a hard time getting into it. I think it was the battle system. (It was hard and grindy) I need to try it out again, probably one of the more modern versions.

I thought this game was okay. I did have an issue with the localisation and would have preferred to see how a company like Squaresoft would have handled it. Working Designs just didn't do it for me with this one. Not only the pop culture references, but also one of the puzzles having the solution removed completely so you have to play a guessing game to try to get through it - and Working Designs also increased the difficulty by making the enemies stronger, and increasing the cost to buy items. Also the way it was translated pulled me out of the narrative by making the game reference things not within the Lunar world. I understand some people like this - but it wasn't for me. OH! And the instant game over at the end of the game, that's similar to how Parasite Eve has an instant game over after beating the last boss can go get a hernia. It caught me out, and I had to beat the last boss again. I much preferred the second game. The characters and story were much better, with characters that eshewed the shackles of their typical archetypes. Comeon, a drunk Priest? Hell -fire- yeah!

Oh yeah, that puzzle was a shocker. Glad I went straight to a guide with that one and didn't waste my time trying to figure it out. I also played the second game, but can't remember too much about it. Looks like I'll have to crank it out soon.

Working Designs added so much 90s jokes with pop culture references, not sure if that was a good thing. I lived my teens in the 90s but the newer generation most jokes will make no sense.

For this one PS1 IF you can find a copy since it NEVER got a Digital PS2 PS3 PS4 or Vita version. Their is a PSP version of this one but its way TOO easy.

Could never get into this game. The combat feels unbearably slow, the art style is painfully generic anime, the story has no hook for me, and I don't like the character designs. Not trying to hate on it, i'm sure it's an ok game, but I just don't see what's so special about it that it warranted so many remakes and rereleases. I far prefer Grandia to this.
