The tragedy of the Lena Zavaroni story is the healthy, vivacious little girl that left her family at 9 years of age is not the same person that was returned to them. Like many child stars the show business industry stole their child’s youth and left Lena a damaged broken woman with depression and an eating disorder, depression and mental health issues that ultimately took her life be it through a broken body with one or not, it was still the result of the lack of adequate care she received throughout her years in the care of both her Management and the Industry..

Lena, Bonny, Karen, and many more - The seventies were the anorexia years. Not only did they have to starve themselves but they had to look like children, instead of women. Paedophilia comes to my mind. There's nothing beautiful about how these women look or the state they were in, regardless of their voices.

On a par with Barbara Streisand and Karen Carpenter. Sheer brilliance.

Wonder what she had to endure at the hands of the BBC? If you actually take the time to think about it, unaccountable corporations that answer to no one and are funded regardless have pretty much a licence to do whatever they please. Sooner we rid ourselves of this concept, the better.

Did Lena write the song? I'm rather embarrassed now because she was brought to my attention only a few days ago. The performance is stunning, and probably my favorite of hers so far. The pain in her eyes is palpable; it runs deep, and reaches into every single word. From what I gather of her story, her illness may have been partly genetic (her mother was also mentally ill, I think), and partly the result of pressure and performing too early, without her family around. Her manager seemed cold and aloof, with no maternal instincts. There's been even some speculation about sexual abuse, which Lena perhaps kept secret. My feeling is that even had it not been for her career, her life would have ended sadly, although prolonged. Whatever the case may be, she was a great soul with outstanding talent, and she moved me to tears. Perhaps the light within her was too much for this world, and it manifested as mental illness. I hope you're doing beautifully, Lena.

I just watched the documentary on her life from her first appearance on Opportunity Knocks until her untimely death. The crass comment from Russell Harty saying that people preferred her as her usual ‘chunky self’, did nothing to help this powerhouse of talent. It was so sad seeing her decline from a normal wee girl, into the skeletal body she inherited, because she didn’t get the help she so badly needed until it could take no more, pneumonia finally claiming her life at the age of 35. It moved me to tears.

what amazes me about her is not only her phenomenal voice, which goes without saying, but the raw emotion and passion with which she was able to put across a performance at such a young age. She was, what, 17 here? Lena was the kind of talent that comes along once in a generation. Only Shirley Bassey comes to mind as someone who could rival her. We can only wonder at the heights she would have attained, had she been on this planet for longer.
