Nice review and not just because I agree. 😂 Dalwhinnie has a lemon, lime and heather honey thing going on which I really like. The Glenlivet feels like it needs more spice to me.
@shortpoursКүн бұрын
oh, heather in the Dalwhinnie? I might have to pour a drink tonight and see if i can pick that up! The Glenlivet plays it safe, a bit of spice would go a long way I agree

Regarding the spelling - traditionally, it's whisky in Scotland, whiskey in Ireland. There was another original difference though, to do with grain curing. The clay in Scotland is more gas permeable than that in Ireland. The result is that the smoke from the underfloor fire permeates the grain in the former but not the latter.
@shortpours5 күн бұрын
I realized I hadn’t addressed the spelling so put that in my description haha. The clay is a neat example of how deep things can really get once you really start getting into it. Some also used clay pots in the day for their distillation with copper heads I read once too

Awesome video mate. This will be the video I'll be showing to my newbie friends. Short, down to the point, knowledgeable. The slightest criticism, I'd leave out the 'I think' when talking about the minimum required age. Sounds rather on the unprofessional side :D Anyways, stellar job! What i'd love to see you do is an in-depth b cask comparison video, i.e. what flavor profiles some cask types might bring to the table. STR (Annandale Man o Sword), Bourbon, Sauternes (Arran) , Cabernet Sauvignon (Tamnavulin), etc. Greetings from south-western Germany!

This me as so much to me - I really worried my video would just be too boring! Wood casks!! This is so deep I could talk forever hahah. 100% on my plan once I figure out how to organize my thoughts… Also, point taken, sometimes my candid talking could use cleaning up to ensure accuracy and professionalism, will check myself on the next one! Thanks again! 🥃

😂 they surprised many taking a Gold at the Canadian Whisky Awards in 2024 with this bottle so I was compelled to try it. By no means can it compete with many, but for the price I think the bang for buck is high

@shortpours yeah it was my budget option for a while. Still beats JD and I get to support a local brewery. But if we go purely on taste. I'd recommend Glenfiddich or if you wanna stay in the canadian. Go into "Whisky Illegal" it's from a Quebec brewery. Delicous
@shortpours19 күн бұрын
Oh, I don’t know Whisky Illegal - I’ll search them out and give them a try, thanks!! Glenfiiddich is good for the price too, a bit more than JP10, but also a fruitier (and smoother!).

Overpriced and over-hyped garbage. Every version of Johnnie Walker is not worth the price it sells for.
@shortpoursАй бұрын
Diageo seems to have a reputation for that! Yet, the OSWA even nominated Black for best blended whisky in 2023 (didn’t win, clearly). So, a polarizing brand that’s for sure!
@bradschoenwald3467Ай бұрын
@shortpours yeah.....all these places that claim to be a defacto "expert" that nominate this or that. When most of the time, these so-called experts seem to have a unique palette and preference not shared by anyone else. Stuff that many of these places say is amazing....is disgusting and rot gut garbage to me and the ones they say are average or "meh" are some of my favorites. Each person has a preference and i will go off of actual people and not some of these whiskey snobs. If it was such a shared belief then i would at least have 5 friends who agreed with them at a minimum and i dont. I too thought Johnnie Walker was good scotch and Johnnie Walker Blue was the height of class and sophistication. Then i actually tried other scotch's and found out that Johnnie Walker Blue especially is for people who think they know about Scotch and have it as a status symbol. When in fact it is for people who are ok with being scammed for a subpar overpriced Scotch. The Balvenie 14 year Caribbean Cask costs about 1/3rd of what Johnnie Walker Blue costs and is by far a more sophisticated scotch. The flavor profile changes with each sip. Far more affordable and drinkable. That is my take on it.
@shortpoursАй бұрын
You're absolutely right-whisky is such a personal experience, and 'expert' opinions can definitely lean toward their own unique preferences! I haven't had the chance to try Balvenie 14's Caribbean Cask yet, but I love a good rum cask finish, so I'll be adding it to my list. At a quick glance it’s about the same price as Johnnie Green where I am so that’s not bad at all - thanks for the recommendation!
@bradschoenwald3467Ай бұрын
@shortpours let me know what you think. Try a pour without any drops of water and savor the experience. Then try one with drops of water to open it up more It is definitely one of my favorites. There are others as well, but it is in my top 3. Everyone i have introduced it to, it becomes their new favorite.

Is there a maximum number of times something could be distilled?
@shortpoursАй бұрын
Great question that I don’t have an answer to hahah. Most whiskies are distilled 1-3 times, very few are distilled 4 (like Bruichladdich). Some vodkas though are distilled 10+ times I believe, because the more you distill a spirit the more pure it becomes.

A bit longer of a Short Pours video, but one which is well received! Very curious, what's your preference in terms of proof? I know some people prefer higher or lower. Nice work, Chris. Onward and upwards!
@shortpoursАй бұрын
I thought it was a bit long as I uploaded it 🫣 but glad to hear it was well received! I’m typically a fan of lower proof whisky/bourbon, I find them more shippable. But higher proof has its benefits! A dash of water (distilled preferably) and it opens it up, sometimes revealing new flavors making it almost like you have two different whiskies!

Canadian rye does not need to be at least 51% rye - that is the American rule. Indeed, Canadian rye does not legally have to contain ANY rye grain to be called a rye. "Rye" is a historical nickname for any Canadian whisky. In the case of Reifle Rye, it is 91% rye, 6% Old Granddad Bourbon, and 3% Sherry. We can do strange blends like that up here, eh? 😅
@shortpours2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the note and you are absolutely correct! Sometimes I talk/drink without thinking it through fully and I've made a mistake or two like this in other videos too. Too bad KZbin won't let me edit and re-post! I'd love to be able to add an on-screen text thing with a correction...Also, I didn't know this had 3% sherry! On my third bottle, I plan on keeping it on hand as long as it's available. $36 - $44 USD, and it's an absolute sherry bomb. I taste Macallan Sherry Cask in there for sure, but it's more interesting because of the blended malt. Is there Highland Park in this as well? I wouldn't be surprised, as well as some Glenrothes. Im guessing the casks selected for this blended malt were not quite up to par for the core range of Macallan and others in the Edrington collection, but that's just a personal theory. Age unknown. Exquisite when blended at home with a smokey Islay and a little bit of Speyside or Highland.🎉

@shortpours6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the concern! Definitely not clickbait (on purpose). If you watch the video again you’ll notice the bottle shots around 0:42 and 1:15 - they both say zero sugar at the bottom of of the front label, not the top of the bottle as they do in the thumbnail. As well, I show the rear nutrition labels which show zero sugar. I also say it’s sweetened with sucralose. It is different packaging (Canadian vs US I believe), but same product. Point well taken though, I’ll see if I can find an identical image for a thumbnail instead of just taking their most recent image from their website, like I did.

This was also one of my earliest videos so I was, and still am, figuring it out as I go. Points like this are helpful, but perhaps don’t assume we are all intentionally being click-baity, when maybe we are actually just making mistakes along the way
