Thanks for sharing this. It's been a nightmare dealing with an infestation due to contaminated bran products. Ruins everything. I just feed local birds and rescued roadrunner but end up spending too much time removing the mites.

FINALLY! I wasted so much time online. All I wanted was a way to separate the Beatles from the eggs and I could not find a resource that talked about rotating crops. I know you didn’t go into that aspect very deep, but at least you hinted at it.

Nope. The goal is to stress them out. If they haven’t turned after 10 days they are too small and need to go back to the bins to grow larger

I've found a great source for finding sieves for mealworms, etc.: Temu! And so much cheaper than elsewhere! They have singles and sets but you have to spend some time to make sure you're getting the mesh sizes you want but worth it! Some sieves sets have the same size meshes, so not much help and a lot of them just don't tell you the size. I found 2 x different larger size green plastic sieves for only AU$3 - $4.00! A, couple of slotted stainless steel sieves that were only around AUS2.00 - AU$3.00. Ea one appeared a little different in mesh size. If one wasn't suitable, I can use the other in the kitchen. Then, 2x stainless steel mesh, one size 40 and the other size 50. Scrub that! I must've missed out on the size 50 (Blast!) and the order is $11.13 over so I'll have to complain about that and see what happens. Though I suppose I can consider that the postage but, it was supposed to be free. They're all from different senders but can be all ordered at once from the cart. I've used Temu only once before. I had to make other purchases as the minimum order for Australians was AU$40. There are other sieve items that are a little more expensive but still very cheap in comparison to other places..

I’ll never use cut oats again! Using latex gloves helped sort through the large uneaten trash. Feed store had a torn bag of wheat bran and I got a 5 gallon pail full. Sorted into more drawers. Lots of pupae about to morph, lots of larvae and beetles so not really a set back. The mealworms are like a compost bin for us.

Wow, amazing video. Great explanation and love the tour. I started a small colony in a letter page sized storage system with the intention of feeding our 5 chickens... But I think I need a bigger colony because the chickens gobbled them up in 1 go.. It's only about the size of one of your rainbow colored trays. And it took me ages to get full sized worms. 🤣

Just freeze your substrate overnight in a deep freeze and you will never get mites. I use oatmeal in the cardboard tubs. As soon as I get them home I take the plastic lid and paper seal off the tops and set them open in the deep freeze until the next day. I have never had mites in my mealworm tubs in 10 years of raising them. Heat doesn't always kill them off, but freezing is guaranteed.

what size are the slits, did you experiment with bigger or smaller before you settled on this one
@spacecoastmealworms9 ай бұрын
I went through several interactions before I found the ‘perfect’ slot size. Then I sent a few similar tray sizes out to other farmers across the country so they could provide input about their preferred size. Turns out they all pretty much agreed on the same size I got, which tells me there’s a ‘standard’ size. This size, unfortunately, is proprietary for obvious reasons.
