I am totally on the same page as you with that Jewel album too. I got it when it came out as well and it was so bad. My mom listened to it in the car with me and she said that those were some of the worst lyrics she ever heard. I had to agree!

"Should It Stay Or Should It Go" sounds like my ongoing project for the past year. I have small stacks of CDs to revisit, most of which I'm probably going to cut loose. As far as your choices go, let me start by saying that I love both English Beat albums, particularly Special Beat Service. To me, they were the cream of the Two-Tone movement. The Eric Clapton album doesn't surprise me, since I don't think he's done much of anything worth hearing since 461 Ocean Blvd. Jewel struck me as a parity of the painfully earnest folkie with little to say, which earned her an SNL skit. And as far as country goes, I would recommend you check out After Awhile, by Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He's a Texas cowboy songwriter whose songs convey a certain intimacy and beauty, sometimes touching on eastern spirituality. And his voice is unique, different from any country singer I've ever heard. Enjoying your videos.

Good video, I think I agree with most of what you said, glad you kept the 'til tuesday cd, but I don't agree with your opinion on Jewel. I really love her work! I also bought her second album when it came out and I loved it, plus her third and fourth albums, and one or two others as well plus her Christmas cd. I guess each to their own though.... I think her third album was called This Way, and I'd recommend that one in particular.

I actually really liked that Mary Chapin Carpenter album, it is a light 4 stars for me, even though it is out of my wheelhouse. I also kind of liked the Ben Harper album, even though I haven't listen to it in a bit and he has few albums that I like better. The only other album I listened to in it's entirety is the Jewel album. It has been awhile, but from my recollection it was mid. Most of the other albums I knew some songs off the album but never listened to the entire album. The song "Voices Carry" is a banger.

Your phrase "I got rid of Alf in 1987," to me, anyway, conjures the picture of someone throwing a lifesize ALF puppet into the trash until it stops festering in the garbage and comes back alive through sheer malevolence

Appreciated your having the following albums on your list for '84: Husker Du: Zen Arcade Minutemen: Double Nickels On The Dime Replacements: Let It Be Prince: Purple Rain All of them are essentials to me, and both Husker Du and the Minutemen are among my favorite bands of all time. I got into Metallica much later, with Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning being the only albums of theirs that really matter to me. I was also really fond of Will The Wolf Survive, by Los Lobos. Suffice to say, my top ten plays out differently from yours. But still, I love looking at lists (and making them). Thanks for sharing.

Excellent video Vanessa! My favorite albums of 1984 are: 1. Iron Maiden - Powerslave 2. Bryan Adams - Reckless 3. Dio - The Last in Line 4. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith 5. Metallica - Ride The Lightning 6. Berlin - Love Life - (This one never gets mentioned. It's a great Berlin album if you love really great synth rock with a lot of rocking guitar riffs) 7. Scorpions - Love at First Sting 8. Whitesnake - Slide it in 9. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath 10. Van Halen - 1984 11. Rush - Grace Under Pressure 12. Bathory - Bathoryy (1984) 13. Lee Aaron - Metal Queen - (this one also never gets mentioned. It's a fantastic power metal/synth metal album with Lee's great vocals) 14. Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales 15. Saxon - Innocence is No Excuse Funny enough being a metal head I also really enjoyed Private Dancer by Tina Turner.

I gave up on new/current music around 1993/94. I didn't care for Mariah Carey or Micheal Bolton, Nirvana or Pearl Jam, Billy Ray Cyrus or Ice Cube etc...so, i retreated deeper into the 70's and didn't even take notice of current bands for about 15 years. Recently, however, i've become a big fan of Airbag and Israel Nash. 🎶

Thanks for the review of the book . I discovered his albums a long time ago . There are times , when listening to his music , that he reminds me a bit of Bruce Cockburn , who I discovered a long time before Mr. Drake . Perhaps it’s just because they are both excellent song writers , and instrumentalists . Anyway , in terms of album preference , my favourite is Five Leaves Left , just ahead of Bryter Later , and then Pink Moon . Great video !

Ppl who get all hung up on voices get on my nerves. It's so superficial. They just sound like typical top 40 types. There's droves of musical acts w/ incredibly strong, melodious, multi-octave voices, but their music does little or nothing for me. If you don't have the goods, actual substance like quality lyrics, melodies, clever song structure, fitting instrumentation & production to flesh out the songs well, then move along.

I like Pink Moon and FLL easily over Bryter Layter. I remember Peter Buck calling BL was 'possibly a perfect album'. I find it overproduced. Boyd, usually great, over did it with the brass, keys and strings, imo. For me, Drake's greatness is most of all about the lyrics, melodies and that voice. Detracting from those elements weaknes the experience for me. I generally don't get into 'easy, breezy'. That sounds like what you put on for background. That's not what music is for me.

I, myself, always have cared more about the individual songs whether they are pop, alternative, hip hop, ska, trip hop, house,or drum n bass. Ah Jeff Buckley. I was lucky to see him live four times starting in 1994-95. He even flirted with my date, but in a charming, not gross way, of course. Props to doing some digging and finding new discoveries! Deep dives of any year should unearth something. Even when I've already heard about a thousand albums in a particular year, I can always find something! Earlier in the year I did a daily countdown of 1994 faves, and they may not have broken into my top 30, but I found a few things. I knew about Cornelius' debut album but hadn't gotten around to hearing it until this year. Blind Mr. Jones - Tattoine and The Grays - Ro Sham Bo were pretty new to me too. While you may not be into heavier stuff, there's still loads that you probably would like. I highly recommend you check out Laika and Pram for starters. The Too Pure label was on fire at that time. The Sea And Cake, Sunny Day Real Estate, Slant 6. Plenty more indie pop like The Wedding Present, Built to Spill, Jale, Sloan, Velocity Girl, Madder Rose, Wild Carnation, The Wannadies... I'd assume you already know Stereolab and Low and they just didn't make yr list, but who knows! My top one, Disco Inferno is somewhat challenging, experimental stuff associated with post-rock in early days, but a whole different thing, not for everyone. 1. Disco Inferno - DI Go Pop 2. Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley 3. Laika - Silver Apples Of The Moon 4. Portishead - Dummy 5. Shellac - At Action Park 6. Jeff Buckley - Grace 7. Pram - Helium 8. The Gits - Enter: The Conquering Chicken 9. Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet 10. The Obsessed - The Church Within 11. Acrimony - Hymns To The Stone 12. Low - I Could Live In Hope 13. Motorpsycho - Timothy’s Monster Dirty Three - Dirty Three Unwound - New Plastic Ideas Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - De Lama Ao Caos Tortoise - Tortoise Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In Melvins - Stoner Witch Codeine - The White Birch Solitude Aeturnus - Through The Darkest Hour The Sea And Cake - The Sea And Cake Weezer - Weezer Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary Dinosaur Jr. - Without A Sound Bark Psychosis - Hex Massive Attack - Protection God - The Anatomy of Addiction Slant 6 - Soda Pop*Rip Off Dog Faced Hermans - Those Deep Buds
