Is the tempo adjustable? This is very fast compared to other versions.

Either Swanson or I have the 88 note Garland roll. Alas, I’m away for my collection for a year or more, so I gotta live vicariously through you. “And give up show business???”

Yep. It’s one of those wistful late arrangements that becomes an “ear worm” that you may return to again and again. Musical change is in the air. You can sense a whiff of the Great Depression about to come with this one!

A great song! A great roll! I had this on several labels, including QRS. I think it MIGHT have even been a Wendling? But Supertone was the best. (As they were on A LOT of songs) IMHO. If you might, I have a question about your "Roses of Picardy" roll. You said it was an Arden/Ohman roll. I think I had a QRS "Roses of Picardy" roll, but it sure didn't sound like that/yours. But I can't find it on google with your QRS number. Again, it's a GREAT arrangement. I'm just sorry I never had it when I collected. I've probly looped it 100 + times, since you posted it. LoL

It was played by A & O but in 1923 and not in the teens when the song was written. They did make the QRS roll. You can find it if you search for it. M4

Ran across this tune a while back, I gather in it's "intended" presentation, on an Edison acoustic disc with a solo vocalist and small backing ensemble. It's a pretty languid thing, one of those "dear old mother" kinds of tunes. Imagine my shock at how the Clark arrangement has SO MUCH life and works beautifully as a dance tune. That probably explains why you'll have a hard time finding a dance band side of it, and why it's "all but forgotten". Based on the lyric (which is very ponderous and introspective), I doubt it was arranged for any "hot" ensemble. We're rather lucky someone at Melville Clark's operation saw some potential in this thing.

Terrific song, piano restoration and free trip back in time. Song over a hundred years old. Love the big antique upright pianos. Save one, fix it and play it. They are golden. Thanks.

I have been enjoying this tune for decades also on my KT Special. Just KZbin Roses of Picardy JP Seeburg KT Special for the Clark 4X-108 version.

I first heard this song on a nickelodeom in Virginia City(?) Montana in the mid 1970's. Unfortunately, most of their pianos in their 'museum' were in bad shape back then. I did buy their record, and I think this song was one that was recorded on it. But it was almost 50 years ago, and my memory fades....🤔

The Fox Movietone Follies of 1929 offered a decent set of tunes, but none seemed to ever catch on as hits in their day. "Walking with Susie" feels, from the lyric, like it ought to be an inconsequential throwaway, but it's musically well-written and sprightly. I get the feeling that the 1920s had such an abundance of good popular tunes that the public could afford to rebuff offerings like these. I mean, The Music Goes Round and Round from about 1935 isn't any more inane, and yet it had legs and kept going.

except someone appears to have thought it was amusing to switch the genders --see qrs 3506--thus turning the typical red hot mama into a stereotype frigid woman (hence the refrigerator) and losing all of the humor in Ethel Water's version

Hi Mark, this song is titled "It Must Be Hard" and was composed by James Blythe and Will Huff around 1925-1926 (I have to look up the copyright, which would be registered with J. Mayo Williams' "Chicago Music Publishing Co." which was his side project he ran while working at Paramount Records) and was recorded by Priscilla Stewart in 1926 with James Blythe on piano. Here's that record, enjoy!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKjXeHl5n7Z2grM
