This is a very good transcription. You made me notice things I was mis-hearing. My own transcription is slightly wrong in some places. Many other transcriptions are wrong too. For example, I thought the first phrase is 6 5 R 5... of the chord (still sounds fine), but it seems to actually be 9 7 9 5... I thought the b7 in measure 9 was actually the 7th of the major, but he's arpeggiating a dominant 7th. I thought in bar 10 he played the upper structure of an Em9#7 arpeggio but he's actually playing the upper structure of F9 (I don't know why it works, it's not a tritone sub...but it works!) Parker does very interesting things that later jazz musicians don't do. I don't know how he managed to be so brilliant in such a short life. Sometimes I hear fragments of modern (at the time) classical music he seems to have absorbed. Brilliant improviser.

I wish they played the melody more like Donald Byrd's band. This is like a different song even if it has the same changes, like a contrafact. Also wish Herbie would have stuck to a melody them a bit before he starting that frantic solo. But this was in the middle of a concert where they were picking up heat, I was hoping for something chiller

What a great transcription of a very interesting Lovano solo. Sometimes I think Lovano is all about his sound and soul, until I pay closer attention to his rhythm, harmonic choices, phrasing and interactions etc :). He is a mysterious cat, there is only one Lovano.

how is he given his line and choice of notes following the form? at least i dont see or hear it till around 2:45 or so
It's a crime for you to have such few subscribers. I'm a saxophonist in the US, and I greatly appreciate your efforts to make educational videos. My goal this summer was to get at least a dozen more bird solos under my belt, to say nothing of my creative interests. I find videos like these very motivating. My saxophone was stolen last year, and the student model Jupiter a friend gave to me went finally went kaput; Doing transcriptions--and of course the music--are what keeps me positive and hopeful that I will get a horn again, and continue carrying the torch with the greatest respect to those who came before.

interesting thank you ! I like you your reminder at the end that we should embrace the diversity of a musical journey , i think that's deep.. and indeed it prevents us from going into dogmatism, which would be only a projection of our personnal needs and journey into others lives. About transcribing, and from my personnal experience, I think the most crucial part is to PLAY the solo, over and over, imitating not only the the notes but also and more importantly all the aspects that makes a player great: sound, energy, beat placement, feeling, accent, intention. Those cannot be written down and require deep imitation. Then, and that's what I forget in my formative years, go beyond the transcription and be creative with it: for example: play in the style of, intuitively, or extract a phrase or a concept and play with it.

Definitely, learning music by transcribing solos is a great experience. It's about more than just hitting the right notes; it's about capturing the feel of the music. But with things like big band music transcription, you can't play it all by yourself. Everything depends on what you're trying to learn and your own music journey. (solos, learn repertoire, large ensembles, etc.) This said, for me, playing the solos I've learned has been very rewarding.
