Hi, Dragan. I have quite a large Brugmansia in a pot, in the ground. My problem is that I didn't get a single flower on it this year. It's about 7' tall but has no V's. Is there a way to prune it to encourage V's? BTW, I'm also in zone 5b, in Waterloo, so I bring it and others into the basement every year.
@GreenDragan10 күн бұрын
Feel free to prune to keep a desired shape or size. Pruning will encourage branching and more potential flowers.

Hello! I live in the SoCal desert and am new to growing plumerias. I'll be receiving some cuttings that were just cut a couple days ago (Sept. 2024). Can I still propagate the cuttings now, although their dormant season is soon upon us, or do I need to store them until early Spring, 2025?

Yes you can start rooting the plumeria now. Try to give them ample sun and a warm sheltered location in the coming weeks. Cheers.

Hello, how long does it take them to regrow to at least 4 feet from the base to the crown if I were to cut the trunk back around 1.5 feet tall? I’ll use the cage method where I build a cage of chicken wire filled with dry leaves around the plant and put a tarp over it. I planted one on a raised rock wall bed about a half foot off the ground in zone 6A. It’s in a wind protected spot we get hammered by winds in the winter mostly from the north west which luckily it’s in a sheltered spot
@GreenDragan24 күн бұрын
I would cut mine back to 2-3 Ft. of trunk in the fall, cover the whole area with dry leaves till you couldn't see the trunks, then a large tarp to keep it all dry. In the spring the tarp would be lifted by the new growth in early April. The more trunk you preserve the taller they will grow. By the end of the season they could be 12 to 15 Ft. tall. So to have 4 FT. of trunk takes 2-3 weeks in mid April to May.
@Lo1XDImNoob24 күн бұрын
@@GreenDragan What would you say is more efficient, the cage or pile. With the pile I would think you would have to leave the trunks shorter or no? How long do you think it would take if I left the trunks 2 feet? I’ll also probably order a special banana fertilizer. This year I didn’t really fertilize..
@GreenDragan23 күн бұрын
@@Lo1XDImNoob it depends on how big your clump is. My clump was about 10 Feet or 3 Meters across. You will need a lot of dry leaves. I would collect many yard bags full of leaves from the neighbourhood on yard waste days to put around my plants. I fertilize with bags of cattle manure and as much compost as possible. When bananas are actively growing you can not over feed or water. They will happily grow in a compost pile.

The number of flowers can be affected by how much sun the plant gets, insufficient feeding or the variety of plumeria you are growing. Keep on trying. Cheers.

This video is very helpful as I start preparing to need to cover some tropical plants this winter, but I wonder, do you need to provide any water to your plants at all over winter and when do you put up your cold frames and when do you take them down (general guidelines)?
@GreenDragan2 ай бұрын
Regarding watering in the winter, it depends on the type of plant what zone you are in and the duration of the extreme cold. Palm trees with my protection method using fold frames, do require water during winter. In my zone 5B garden during a typical winter there is enough snow melting between deep freezes to keep the palms happy. Bananas, succulents etc. get zero water. Putting up and taking down protection depends on the species and their cold tolerance. Trachy palms are the last to get protection while Sago palms are first followed by Pindo palms. The whole process can take 4-6 weeks from start to finish. Removing protection depends on the long range forecast. The cold hardiest plants are uncovered first when nightly temps do not drop below -5C and the most tender plants are exposed at about +5C to +7C.

Hey greendragon. How deep did you amend the soil for your agave planting? Also what mix of organics and inorganics did you use? Thanks in advance!
@GreenDragan3 ай бұрын
The amended soil is about a foot deep. The lowest portion is pure coarse sand with the top mixed with native soil. There is no exact proportion. What is key is to keep the mix free draining. In addition, the whole thing is in raised beds which is higher than the surrounding lawn.

It is not the age as different varieties grow at different rates. I suggest cuttings of 8 to 12 inches long, leaving at least 18 to 24 inches on the parent plant. The branch can be from last years growth, semi-hard wood not too green. Hope that helps.

Such impressive variety GreenDragon. Hope everything made it through the mild winter well. Have you ever tried overwintering a majesty palm in the ground or know of anyone that has tried in Ontario? I got an old root bound one in a large pot which is about at the limits my back can take. Do you have any suggestions? Root pruning?
@GreenDragan5 ай бұрын
The Majesty palm is not on the list of palms I would try to over winter in a cold climate like zone 5. Their heat and humidity requirements make them unsuitable, also their mature size. Even in central and north Florida is not ideal. Pune only dead fronds, Do not root prune apart from rotten or diseased roots, as this will set the plant back with no guarantee of good regrowth. Best of luck.

Hi Greendragon, I'd like to pick your botanical brain again if you don't mind. The majesty palm I have is maybe a few decades old, and has grown a slanted small trunk which can't support the new growth now that ive been taking it outside for the summers (currently using rocks to support the trunk). It looks like it may have tried pushing out aerial roots at some point along this little trunk portion in the past. None the less, as I try to repot it again, I am wondering if I should try to bury this portion in soil so as to stabilize the now top heavy new growth. Of course I am nervous to do this and kill it. Do you have any suggestions? Please let me know if I can send you a picture. Thanks again!
