sax player here, but do you have any experience with synthetic reeds? If you do play on then, do they last forever and offer comparable response and quality to natural cane reeds?
@callyclarinet
@callyclarinet 10 күн бұрын
I don't think they last forever. I have a couple of synthetic reeds I will occasionally use, but I find cane has the resistance, articulation, and feel I prefer. both sound good, just depends on player preference.

Dear Callie daz from Australia, finally turned to vandoran v21 and v12 reeds and ended months of frustration, noticed vast improvement in quality of cut of the reeds and the dramatic improvement in tone and immediate response, v21 is awesome for articulation, glad I solved my issue with reeds. Thank you for posting this exceptional teaching video. Bravo Cally! I find that many people, myself included, can practice for extended periods of time with a lack of mindfulness and therefore fail to make as much progress as they otherwise might. Thank you for highlighting this. My solution to this problem is to attempt to practice for maybe as little as ten or fifteen minutes but with total concentration. It’s revealing how quickly these short focused practising periods build one’s technique, musicianship, and ultimately confidence and enjoyment.

For those with access to an amenable bassoonist, there's also three trios with clarinet by Franz Tausch. Tausch also wrote a double clarinet concerto (for performance with his father IIRC). Both of these are available on Tausch's page on IMSLP.

When I began playing the clarinet I was trying to use knives - I have a heavy hand just ruined the reeds. I purchase #4 strength reeds, yet I play on 3 or 3.25 strength. The first thing I do is mark the center of the reed at the heel and cover it clear nail hardener, once dried, start to use sandpaper. I seldom use 600 grit due to my heavy hand. I start with 1200 grit wrapped around a large eraser or a soft block of rubber. The underside of the reed I sand while the paper is on the glass, this gives me a better result, especially if the reed is not completely flat underneath. The top of the reed I sand the edges about two to three millimeters into the vamp area. I test the reed by rotating the clarinet side to side and find which side is stuffier. I noticed the low register can be adjusted by sanding a few millimeters by the bark, as one goes down towards the tip can adjust the upper register and then finally the tip. Once I have a balanced reed I use a Micro Mesh sandpaper 12,000 grit to polish the underside and the top. I buy the variety pack micro mesh because they last a long time. I try to stay away from what is known as the heart. One more thing I do is light the reed underneath to view where I could remove more cane. I am very careful not to remove too much as I can never put it back. Although I wet the reed to test, I dry them as much as I can to work with the sandpaper. Watch Ridenour use of what he calls the TGA system.

Thank you so much for your incredibly helpful video! Your tips have really improved my clarinet playing. I was wondering if you could offer some advice on right-hand position and fingering, especially when switching between low Ab (G#) and A natural. I find it challenging to move my ring and pinky fingers simultaneously, and often, the sound of G natural comes out in between. Any tips or exercises to make this transition smoother would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, another clear and helpful video! My least favorite key is the throat G#-- unlike the throat A, to play it I find I have to lower (or rotate) my wrist, which pulls all the fingers away from the left-hand tone holes and sometimes makes it awkward to get them back in proper position quickly. Do you have any advice on doing this better?

Cally, I am an old man, attempting to play clarinet since 1963. I've had some professional success, but family and job and other avocational pursuits got in the way. Now, about to retire for 2nd time, and playing the misery stick again. Back to Yamaha clarinets, real reeds, and trying to correct bad habits from practically zero fundamental training. Your videos have been very helpful in re-learning the instrument. Keep up the great work!! Tom, NLR AR

Sometimes for my clarinet hand position, I break down a small portion of a piece and think of that as one fluid motion. Sort of like a tennis player or golf swing that has a cause and effect. So on the exercise you had the last 16th of a measure going down to the first note in the next measure and then back up again. And I sort of think of that as a total swing… or even a word or sentence like a word “ricochet” in my head or I think of something that I have to connect it 123. That way, I can also adjust my hands and make sure I don’t have the various hand position issues you were talking about. Speaking of hand position. I laughed because we can’t have inverted knuckles on our normal keys, but we do use our knuckles when we play the “a” key. Then you had the pinkies working just so on the appropriate keys without too much pressure. My head couldn’t help but spinning through a possible dad joke creation. If I was in the mob, “hey, Knuckles” “hey, Pinky ” we have a job for you. They responded “no problem, boss. We’ll take care of it.” Then having to correct them to say “no, not that kind of job.”
@callyclarinet
@callyclarinet 23 күн бұрын
That's a great way to think about it as one fluid motion. Kind of like putting sounds together to form words and sentences when we speak. It's a lot easier to think of it as one full "swing."

Beware the "came with the horn" mouthpiece (including Yamaha). It is the biggest obstacle to developing the upper clarion and the altissimo. My low C bass clarinet cost me AUD$2200; my Vandoren B46 mouthpiece cost me AUD$400. and on that combination I can easily and reliably reach an upper altissimo 2nd F (a G with the wind behind me, after saying a few prayers).
