Having owned a V8 SD1 running low on fuel is something that happened on a very regular basis. I loved my Rover but the running cost. Jeez.

I think the Rover SD1's low fuel warning was triggered a bit early. We experienced a similar harrowing ride in Germany, decades ago, middle of the night, low on fuel but we did make it to the next fuel pump. Such indicators are much better than the simple 'out of fuel' warning light that comes up when your engine finally shuts down.
