This is an awesome review and I really appreciate the info about the sizing. I recently purchased this pattern but still need to trace off my preferred size and make a toile of this jacket especially for the shoulder area. Even with your little hiccups here and there your jacket turned out very pretty and I love the color of your fabric. Thank you for sharing😊✂️🪡🧵💙

Hi ladies, Sarah, it's a shame the pockets are a bit low. I think they would be more practical at your own personal hip line. Hi, I'm glad you tried the poppy cocoon dress. The pattern was included in a magazine I bought. When I suggested that pattern I should have added that I found the Sewgirl sew along. I needed it, basically I had the sew along beside me and sewed along step by step. It was a strange construction that's what caught my attention but works well. I would do it again but do at least two sizes down. I actually took 4.5 cm off the sides of the dress and 10 cm off the length. I put a cowl neck on mine. Sarahs' dress came out really well. I find with in seam pockets you have to look at where they are placed, I have had some that came down way too low. Congrats on both your makes and happy sewing. Just quietly I am a bit jealous about the overlocker it sound fantastic. Happy sewing.

Lol I'm a bit envious of the air threading overlocker too 😆. Siiigh, I'm sure I'll get one one day... hopefully? I managed to chug my way through the instructions of the Cocoon Dress but I have to say the sew a long would have been amazing! If I make it again I think I'll hunt it out just so I can make a better job of it. But it was a fabulous suggestion thank you! I agree about the position of in seam pockets in knits... and actually in anything because I am short they are often too low for me. But in knits they do tend to stretch downwards, don't they 🤣
@AussieTracy16 сағат бұрын
I am wondering if the pockets on Sarah's dress should be raised up a little. The pattern was probably drafted for a taller person so the pockets looked a little low. Oohh I can see both dress styles made in a good ponte with tights and boots for winter. You both did a great job on the dresses. Oh how sweet of Sarah's hubby to do that. My wish this year is a coverstitch machine. 😊 I stand also when sewing (most of the time) but I ended up buying a stereo/headphone extension cord and now my pedal reaches to the floor as my desk (not adjustable) is taller than a standard desk.
@sewmuchsewing14 сағат бұрын
Hi there. Yes I think the pockets could be raised on Sarah's dress. I find that with most patterns, woven or knit. I'm not quite as short as Sarah but pretty close! Patterns are usually drafted for taller people 😔. Oh yes, I could do with an air threading overlocker too 😭. 🙋♀️

The air threading and self tension control really is the greatest improvement in sergers! I have used Baby Lock sergers since the 1980's along with a couple cheaper brands while saving up for a new BL. Hands down, BL is the best. I construct all my clothing with a serger and used to sew at least 8 hrs a day. My 1st one was traded for a differential feed one when they came out...what an improvement! That one lasted 25+ years. The cheaper ones? Motors burnt out in less than a year. Now, with the air threading/needle threading and self tension, Im in heaven. Im thinking of a cover stitch machine but have no room for one right now. Oh, I also use BL sewing machines. I have 7 machines, most never get used but cant part with them, and I keep a basic Brother as my just in case my BL needs servicing. I know Sarah will love her new overlocker as much as I love mine, what a great gift!
@sewmuchsewing17 сағат бұрын
Oh my gosh, you sound like you're a machine aficionado! 7 machines ???? Sounds perfectly reasonable to me 😆. I have a coverstitch machine (its a Brother as is my main machine) and I do love having it. It doesn't get hauled out every time I need to hem a knit ... but it does quite often. I'm just a bit limited on space or I'd leave it set up permanently like my sewing machine and overlocker. I'm trying not to be envious of Sarah's air threader 😁.

What do you usually wear under those very sheer fabrics? I have a lot of sheer tops and I wear a cotton sleeveless vest/singlet, but I'm not sure what I would wear under a sheer dress. I love the bird fabric (herons or possibly storks IMO) it's got a simplified Japanese vibe.
@sewmuchsewing6 күн бұрын
Hi there! Underneath sheer dresses I wear long singlet dresses. I have many! Some are jersey knit and some a polyester (purchased those a long time ago). Actually I always wear a slip/cami of some kind under just about every top or dress I wear because the slip skims over lumps and bumps and gives me a nicer shillouette. But for more wintery times I want to make long sleeved rayon jersey dresses. I think I'd need two full length and one knee length and I already have a lightweight merino full length long sleeve dress. Yes that bird fabric does have a Japanese vibe, someone else suggested cranes?

Hi Catherine, can I suggest strongly that you toile the Barrel dress. I absolutely love the look of the dress but when I made it up it was the biggest disappointment whether it was my fabric choice or not who knows (linen)..plus a very expensive exercise. Am loving your fabric stash think I need to start going through mine, I have a huge stash of 100% cottons left over from my bag making days. Have a great weekend 🙂

Hey, great advice re the Barrel Dress thank you. I had been hoping to not have to do toiles because I have such a lot of things to make... but I really appreciate the heads up. Perhaps that dress goes further down my list and I do it when I have time to muck around with it. What was the disappointment? Was it the fit or the shape? From the images I was wondering if there Is something about the neckline...? It will be so great to get some of those fabrics out of the cupboard and on my body 😄. Can you make clothing with the cottons you have stashed? Or are they too heavy for that?

Hello, first time here! May I recommend to you a book called Pattern Fitting with Confidence by Nancy Zeiman. She has you base size to make with a measurement between upper arm creases (which is a bit higher than upper bust). She gives you a size chart based on this. This way shoulders etc fit your torso, and you increase bust size based on your bra cup size by making larger darts. Instead of making a sz 22 based on bust size I am now making sz 18! The book walks you thru adjusting patterns to fit your measurements, VERY easy to understand.

Hi Catherine!! Great jacket. I love the color for you. I have to say I haven't been making a lot of Style Arc patterns this last year or two. The instructions are, as you say, doable. Especially for those of us who learned with the old school big 4 patterns back in the 70's and 80's. I just get so frustrated with their sizing. I usually end up actually measuring the pattern myself but I just don't want to do it all the time. I feel the same about my Tina Givens patterns. The sizing is just always so hit and miss that I can't be bothered. I learned the burrito method from a closet Core Video back when she released the Kalle shirt pattern and I've used it a lot since then but, to be honest, I still have to look it up to reassure myself I'm doing it correctly.😂
@sewmuchsewing24 күн бұрын
Yeah it is such a shame about SA sizing. I've made a couple of TG patterns (though I have purchased several more than that and never made them!) but I found those patterns have even more sparse instructions than SA and I wasn't happy with how either make turned out. I just want measurements that pattern houses take the time to give us on a pattern to be accurate... is that too much to ask??? 🥴🤦♀️

Agree about Style Arc. I’ve made three Sydney dresses and the sizing has varied depending on the fabric all wovens but one with a bit of stretch and another without stretch. Great dress but the pocket positioning strange so lve put them in the side seams. Nice little jacket and l love the colour. I think Style Arc patterns are for more experienced sewers given their average instructions. Yes unfortunately making a toile is a bit painful.

Hi there. I agree toiles are painful! I will make one.... sometimes... not often! 😁. Oh gosh interesting to hear the sizing differed so much on your Sydney from fabric to fabric.... I suppose a more structured linen, for example, didn't come out so large as say a rayon? There are so many variables to sewing isnt there?! I agree the pockets are a bit odd and very low down for a short person!
