Might be worth sending that back to leatherman. Seems like an insane amount of rust. I have a sidekick in my fishing bag that gets submerged every now and then when I wet wade in the summer and it only has a spot or two of rust

disagree benchmade is absolutely purposely bleeding their customers. it’s why the only benchmades i’ve bought were all in the past two weeks and were all on sale for under $120. got a mini barrage for $120, and a d2 serrated griptillian for $99 and just saw the black handle black blade griptillian on sale for $99 on bladehq since they’re discontinued. but i think $144 for the base griptillian is an okay price. i think at the $180 price point of the bugout the redoubt is a much better knife, cpm d2 has slightly less edge retention than s30v but it’s much tougher.

Good video. Never had maxamet. I’d go delica in k390 cause I know I can strop it back. Not so sure about the higher hardness maxamet Also prefer the thinner stock on delica. For everyday stuff I slice, I don’t stab often.

I personally like touching up my knives, so i would never go beyond something like 154cm in edge retention, and this is the big one, where i live steels like k390, maxemet and magnacut are obscenely expensive , other wise id give one of these steels a try. PS. I can always hand any of my knives in a lesser steel like 14c28n to someone, and it'll be razor sharp

Thinking about getting some custom scales and clip for my mini grip. P.S. you can also fit Chaves skull clips on the Mini Grip, I did it to mine with my extra Chaves clip and it actually looks really cool.

I have a mini grip and I like it, carried it a few times, but I always go back to my personal fav, The Spyderco Stretch 2 in VG10. I only paid 67.99$ for it, it's got a reliable lock, something I care most about, a solid steel that is easy to maintain, grippy bi-texture scales so it doesn't slip, and a generous lanyard hole. I always go backs to that model bc I love that drop point blade on it, I even have one in K390, but I carry the VG10 just bc maintenance is way easier. And if I lose it somehow, or some idiot I let uses it chips the blade, I won't want to cry, and can just order another one from Japan. I also carry a small knife too, a Chaves TAK, which is my fav small pocket knife for back up.

Great blade steels. I have a pm2 in maxamet and a k390 knife on the way. What kind of bugs me is that so many stainless steel knives are sold with a coating but these two carbon kings are not offered with one. Heck, the s45vn pm2 is offered that way.

That rust will turn black eventually after cleaning with bartenders keep . Ends up looking pretty good imho . Takes a couple years naturally . I think they look better a little worn in . I’m not an edge retention queen either but I’ve noticed the difference using a better steel . It’s liking having a turbo in a v6 😊

I think you are being way to lenient with leatherman, the Victorinox have a lifetime warranty, if you were to send it back it would come back with a minimum of new pliers, a lot of people get the original sent back along with a brand new replacement. Many people moan about the steels that Victorinox use, but just looking at your examples the Victorinox wins hands down.

That corrosion is an interesting data point for comparing both tools. I've heard that Victorionox steel has high level of cromium in it. I wonder if that allowed it to survive longer in your work environment. Either way, it seems victorionox may be the way to go if corrosion is a consideration outside normal use levels. I think I still prefer the toolset of my Surge, but I'm not dunking it in saltwater every day either. Thanks for the info!

14c28n is a tough steel, definitely tougher than both maxamet and k390. It won’t hold the edge like them, but it’s the closest to Magnacut steel. Vanadis 8 and K390 are very close steels. K390 is tougher than maxamet. Maxamet is second to Rex 121 in edge retention.

I have a native 5 LW and I do like it but there is an issue with these knives that spyderco should fix. The handle screw that is right behind the lock bar cannot be tightened fully, it must be left loose. If you tighten it down it will bind up the lockbar. I have had multiple versions of the native 5 LW and they all suffer from this issue.

Interesting that you mention it’s a big win that you “could” disassemble the the Leatherman to clean the tools… The irony is that you obviously didn’t need to do that with the Swiss tool over your entire adult life, yet the Leatherman is a rust bucket after 5 years…

Wondering why you don't clean the rust off the Leatherman and put oil on it? I found a high carbon steel wire clips (made in Japan, surprisingly enough) in a shed in the new house I moved into and cleaned the rust off, now it has little dark spots where rust once was, but they're oiled and ready to go. Look at it like battle scars. 😁 I have one Victorinox so far, might get a swiss champ in future. Right now I have Ranger Grip 79. I think Victorinox put a lot more chromium in their metal because, remember, these are SWISS ARMY knives. That means they had over a century of hard use in the field where it snows and rains, so they had to learn which metal to use so their tools did not rust easily in the field for soldiers to deal with in combat. Leatherman came out in the 70s or 80s, and they did not have all that experience, time or money to put into testing which metal to use to stop it from rusting easily. Just my viewpoint on that issue. Today, they should definitely change up their metal. Guess they just don't feel like it.

@@Knifeandkompass77 If my memory is correct, I just used vinegar and salt to scrub the rust off my tools. I learned to use this to scrub my copper and brass items as well. I think letting the tool soak in acidic liquid (like vinegar) will help break up the rust, thus making it easier to scrub off. And it's not toxic chemicals, so no worries on the fumes. I'd wear plastic gloves anyway. I buy big boxes of disposable plastic gloves to use for many things around the house that I'd not want my skin touching. 😁

"Hands down, Victorinonx". Seconded here. The build quality of the two brands is far superior. Nothing wrong with Leatherman, I had a Charge TTi for 15 years and it never let me down, so huge respect to Leatherman but my Victorinox Spirit build and tool quality is a level up. Personally, I sport a Victorinox Forester One hand and a Knipex Corba XS and I find that covers me nicely both around the farm, ski touring and hiking (for cycle touring I bring an accessory tool kit). Nice video mate.

I much prefer the Para3 LightWeight. The FRN scales have far more comfortable ergos because of their contours, and the LW is significantly lighter, with a far better default pocket clip carry position. Imo, the standard Para3 is a small knife which carries like a full-sized knife. I’d rather just carry a PM2 instead. Ymmv
