Black Friday sales meant I grabbed an X-H2 to replace my X-H1 for $1450usd. Wild that it's already discounted so much cheaper than the X-T5, yet higher specced, whereas the X-T5 goes back in build quality a small step. I'm a little unsure if I made the right decision;- giving up the essential Fuji ethos of dials and Made in Japan, but better in every other measurable way. Brilliant summary video Maarten, it's greatly appreciated.

Hugely appreciate the time and thought that went into this analysis, the best I've seen. It will help my thinking and purchasing decisions. Putting aside the hundred other considerations in the value of a camera, do you think the Xh2 sensor significantly closes the gap between Asp-c sensors and, say, the sensor on Nikon's 7 series, or do you think substantial advantages of the latter remain when it comes to developing and printing out an image? Your iso tests made me wonder, again, whether FF advantages, purely on the level of the sensor, are as significant as I am inclined to believe.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
There will always be advantages of a full frame sensor, even if megapixels are the same or better - that's the reality of the physics involved. However, in the photograph, they can be identical in image quality.

This is an encouraging review. One reviewer said there are issues with the AF on the XH2 and XT5 (not on XH2s) in that it would show "in focus" (green box) but picture would actually be out of focus. Have you heard of this issue? Did you experience anything like this? One reviewer said ISO above 3200 is probably not acceptable. You seem to be suggesting that iOS 6400 is in many cases going to be usable. Is this correct?
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, the AF system does occasionally (especially when the object is closer to the camera than the closest focus distance) show green when the object isn't actually in focus. Familiarity with the camera and its quirks and specific issues is helpful to overcome these issues - and I would suggest that it's true of many/most cameras. The other observation I have here is that not all Fujifilm lenses provide good results. As an example, Fujifilm sent the new 56mm with the review camera, but it's slow and unreliable, as I mentioned in the video. As for ISO, that's too subjective to rely on one person's opinion. For my purposes, 6400, while less than ideal, is certainly usable. You will have to make your own decisions trading off the capabilities of your lens with your need to get this image.

Thanks for the comprehensive and informative review. Did you use firmware 1.10 for your tests? I have now my second x-h2 (after my first refused to focus after 2200 shots) and noticed that AF still struggles focusing against bright light sources and backlit objects. It would confirm focus, but in the review, it was off. Is anyone else struggling with AF?
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
Yes, firmware 1.0 (sorry, I usually mention that) on a production (not review preview) unit. I find under those circumstance, it's best to use the smallest point and that single is much more reliable than continuous. For human subjects, I found that face/eye can be more reliable than a focus point. As demonstrated, I was rather pleased with the results when the light levels were low. Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words.

Thanks for another fine review of the XH-2. How do you feel it compares to the XH-2 S ? It the XH-2 more for stills you think?
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
There are two specific situations where I'd prefer the X-H2S (in general I preferred the X-H2). For burst shooting of fast moving objects, the 2S is the better choice, and if you are recording video with fast moving subjects that would be affected by rolling shutter.

@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by stuttering, but am assuming that the image jumps more than you would like from one frame to the next. What frame rate and shutter duration are you using?
@colinire15 Жыл бұрын
As one pans slowly (in any 4K setting), the image tends to occasionally judder - as if the image is trying to catch up with itself. I'm surprised that no other reviewers has mentioned this. I have spoken to other users of the H2 and they confirmed they had the same problem.@@MaartenHeilbron

@@MaartenHeilbron So much info. Need to rewatch it couple more times. Would love to see how the AF tracks faster moving subjects. That train was moving pretty slow.
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
The challenge for the train scene as it approaches the lens's closest focus distance is the amount of change in focus from one shot to the next. Even though faster moving objects may appear to be more challenging, as they're typically further away, the change in focus is not as dramatic from one shot to the next. Sadly, of course, the brio train has only one speed.

@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
It is safe to assume that if you use a slower burst or smaller image sizes that the duration will be longer. However, there is some internal processing involved, so card write speed is not the only issue. That's clearer when I tested HEIF images with the X-T5. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2K5fWR-i81gbZo

Wondering if a CF Express card with 800 mbps writing are enough for 8k. In theory it should be enough since that demands 720 mbps. If there is a "bottleneck" there would be holes in the transfers. But that depends on the camera how good is it? There would be lots of saving if 800 mbps are enough.
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
In theory yes, but as I said in the video, don't buy this camera if you don't have the budget to take full advantage. Compromise on the camera, not just on the cards, computers and storage you'll need to support it. You will end up frustrated.

@@MaartenHeilbron Btw. Luckily I am a PC user. If it gets slow, Just upgrade the Ram or the processor or the graphics card. Well IF I had an Apple I had to buy a whole new Computer, if it gets slow. I could never ever go Apple, for that reason. A 32 gb ram cost nothing theese days. Makes a world of a difference in performance.
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
Not sure why my reply generated an I hate Mac response, but here's the thing. Although equivalent specs will be more expensive if you purchase a Mac, its hardware and software is simply more capable for stills and video editing from day one, and less likely to show it's age for far longer than a Windows computer. Take a few files to your local Mac store and try it out for an hour or two. My partner Kim is using a 10 year old iMac which is still running well - the only reason to upgrade would be if she was editing 4K video. My personal background is Windows - I was one of authors of the Windows 98 Superbook. And I did just what I suggested. About 20 years ago I took a video camera with an HD recording into the Mac store. Neither the Apple employee or I had any idea bout firewire or any of the things we'd need to do to import/edit HD video from the camera. But within minutes we're looking at the footage - which looked much better on the Mac than it did on the PC I had at home - and a few minutes later I'm editing the footage and seeing edits (that I'm used to waiting to render before you can preview) playback in realtime without rendering. It simply worked without any issues - and that was a revelation. However, I do realize that if you are a tinkerer (and if you're upgrading the processor in your PC, that means you) the pleasure of getting your hands "dirty" and tweaking your system means you could never be happy with a Mac.
@Tbonyandsteak2 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Loved it ;) I dont hate Apple, I am an educated programmer, pretty familier with PC. You cant tweak an Apple as you can with PC. Apple are for people who dont want to worry about tweaking. You can get the same out of a Pc. If you know about types of hardware. There are graphics card for games and for office. Same with processors and motherboards. A dualboard with multi processor, a pro office graphic card that takes multible Screens, get enough ram and you will have a PC that easely outperform any Apple. But you will have to be willing to pay for more. The down side is the Windows.............nothing in it manages processor, memory ressources. IT jut gets piled up over the years and your computer gets slower and slower. The strength of an Apple is that it does manage its ressources.

It's interesting that DPreviewTV complains a lot about the Fuji's subject tracking abilities as they consider it rather unreliable compared to Sony and Canon. What do you think about that?
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
I was hoping that demonstrating would be more effective than complaining. Yes, it's finicky to lock on the object (Sony's selectable area is smaller) but when you get it (that requires experience and practice) it's ability to track and lock on to a subject is remarkable. I will also say that it takes me a long time to do these videos - and it's always my intention to share all of the detail with you, not my final impressions. I make it a point to show, not just tell.
