@DrAnn_HealthhubАй бұрын
On call is after hours essentially. Work is 8am-16h30 calls are overnight or weekends (I.e. overtime)

Hi, Dr. Ann. I hope that you are doing well. Kindly inquire about Forensic pathology as well? Tahnk you so much for the video! Enjoy your day.
@DrAnn_HealthhubАй бұрын
Hey...not sure if I'll have time to do that soon, but I'll try. In the meantime please ask for the forensic pathology dept linked to the university (medschool) and ask for the details of the HOD so you can email them to ask to do an elective in the dept or a visit so that you get a feel of the day to day functions, shadow regs and consultants 🤗🤗. In SA, I hear it's different, not what the movies make it out to be.

So basically Doc when you on call you are a "all in one Dr" whatever comes your way(ER,OR, OBGYN, Pediatrics, Anaesthetic, Radiology and and ....)on call you gotta deal or do they have relevant Doctors placed on call for each department?
@DrAnn_HealthhubАй бұрын
It depends on the hospital. The bigger ones arr split into the various dept and you only deal the the specialty you're working for. In smaller hospitals, you'll cover more and might need to know and be good at everything.

I'm only in 3rd year (I have a previous degree in health), having spoken to a lot of qualified doctors and seniors, I'm realising that the race to get that reg post starts in medical school as it becomes increasingly competitive. To try to involve myself in research, societies and demonstrate a long standing interest in a specialty, impress on each rotation etc etc. Stay the extra hour to help the reg who's tomorrow consultant, network and build relationships (thats the only thing you can do as an undergrad). Even then it might not be enough. Because I'm older - I came knowing what I want to do. That CMSA website and its 28 colleges knows me 😂.I'm open to everything, but we will see what the future has in store.
@DrAnn_HealthhubАй бұрын
That's so true.... what I also did was look at the past papers from the colleges to see if it was the type of content I was in to or willing to study 😅😅🤣

@heinewittgenstein39942 ай бұрын
A whole doc, akayazi imedical school isebenza kanjani 😲🤭. The high school you went to "Absolutely" matters. With the exception of UP (300 students), our medical schools typically have 220-260 spaces for 1st years. 20-30% of those seats are reserved/"guaranteed" to learners from Category 1-3 schools (Non-fee public schools). Further 20-30% is open category (Catergory 4-5 schools (fee-paying public schools), private schools, international students, etc). . . The remaining percentage is reserved for current university students who want to switch to medicine and graduates from other fields. This is true for every university, whether it is UCT, Wits, or WSU. That is why you have so many doctors from "Designated groups" (rural schools + women), they are kind of guaranteed positions, and they don't have to be that competitive. I graduated with engineering from UCT. Half of my classmates were rejected by UCT medical school. One of my classmates, Chris Vrettos, got 'ELEVEN' 100% in his matric. He still got rejected by UCT med school🤣. I was rejected too, but I know personally, students who had a +15% less matric average than mine, who were medical students. I hope this helps and I hope, and I hope this clarifies your paradox as to why there's more doctors from rural schools when private is supposed to be "better". You're really gorgeous btw. Love your channel.

Only a med student but this may have to move higher up my list because I realised I do not like speaking to patients, the hospital hierarchy and calls.

Calls were the worst. Try do electives in a bunch of stuff so you know what they are like, the actual day to day workings also.
