So I have a little magic 4x4 (magnetic but not very strong). The sqaures on the core were really loose and I was still having a hard time keeping the first layer together. The only way I got it together was by putting the center pieces on the yellow sqaures to stabilize it, so maybe try that if your cube keeps falling apart on the first layer.
