If you cut the bottom side (horizontal) first, you don't have to worry about the blade getting wedged. Then, you can finish up with the vertical

Is it possible to extend the rails to cut longer boards?
@frosthornhollowfarm29127 ай бұрын
Yes I have extensions that would allow for 26 foot logs. the possibilities kind of limitless you could just keep connecting 20-ft rails if you purchase more than one frame. It would be more of a novelty to do that. with today's modern framing techniques lumber that long even beams wouldn't be necessary
@Average-AL7 ай бұрын
@@frosthornhollowfarm2912 Thank you I will rebuild an old house so I will probably need beams like 7 or 8 meters long if I take on that project. Is it as sturdy with extensions or does it get more wobbly in any way? Btw what model do you have and how wide deep boards can it cut?

hello. I am starting to build a mill house for my Lucas. I was curious about yours. Are you able to push your millhead indoors at night. how would you have built it differently now that you are using it?
@frosthornhollowfarm291210 ай бұрын
Everything thing can be broken down and stored in the shed, except the rails. Most of the year the mill is set up with the carriage covered with a canvas tarp. If I could decide on a permanent home for it I would build a shed to cover the mill when it's set up. Currently it's easier to move the mill to the logs, so it's never parked in the same place for long
@johnoswald619210 ай бұрын
Glad I found this video. I just milled a bunch of stickers this way following your method. It works great. By the way, I have an 8-30 like yours and the kerf is pretty much 1/4". Is that normal? Shouldn't it be more like 3/16? Thanks.
@frosthornhollowfarm291210 ай бұрын
Ya 1/4" is what I figure, it makes the math easier
@johnoswald619210 ай бұрын
I've done two logs at a time - would like to do three. Did you have to shim and adjust each log until they were all three lined up? That way you could just move across all three? Too bad I cut one set of knotches on the bunks too close to the right side - too far right to get the blade beside the log. I guess if you lined them up close together, in the middle, like you did, it will work. Obviously it worked for you.
@frosthornhollowfarm291210 ай бұрын
I did have to choke each one. If I'm doing three or more I just get them as close to lined up as possible. If I do this it's only for 1 and 2 inch boards, so any loss isn't that great. I do this with small logs to burn through them faster. It saves on set up time.

About to buy one, do you ever regret not getting the 10-30. Curious as to what were the factors that made you choose the 8 over the 10
@frosthornhollowfarm291210 ай бұрын
I don't regret buying the 8-30. the wood I use for framing isn't bigger than 8". The exception is something like stair stringers, in that case, I can cut from the other side to make a few. The 2" gain for making 1" boards wasn't worth the extra cost.

If you do the stop cut on the horizontal and the relief cut in the pull back vertical then you don't need the wedge. When I'm working solo like you are I also idle down when letting hands off the trolley to remove flitches, saves an accident where a flitch or the board gets thrown by the blade which would fly out the tail end but none the less it will mess up the board and slow you down, also helps stop the trolley from running away under gyroscopic forces of full power. Lube up the throttle to make it easy to power on and off.

You are cutting the opposite way mate👍🏻🇦🇺push then pull👌🏻 Lucas has made me some good coin and people so awesome furniture and much more
@johnoswald619210 ай бұрын
I've tried it both ways - both ways work. It's easier to pull vertical first then push horizontal if you're milling by yourself - that way you don't have to walk to the other side of the mill to move the board.

Your sawing ass backwards do the horizontal cut first destroying the end of every board when it drops down on the saw at the end of the cut. If this mill won't do that I don't want it
@frosthornhollowfarm2912 Жыл бұрын
i could do the horizontal first and I do on large timbers. they tend to sit on the blade and bind. the issue then is the lumber tails off from the opposite side and when I am working alone I would have to walk around the machine for each board. on one inch boards I'm moving so fast as I go through horizontally the board doesn't have time to drop onto the blade. if any thing it lands on the riving knife. even if it did take a little off the end it would be within the last inch. perfectly acceptable as logs are cut 6"-7" longer for trim. if your cutting logs to the finished lumber length you already messed up.
