Cut into 1x6s and 1x8s yield was 41-6s and 6-8s.
Camera shut off right before i took off another layer of vertical 6s.
This is one of three logs of this size saved from the chipper.
Old but the wood inside is still good.

If you do the stop cut on the horizontal and the relief cut in the pull back vertical then you don't need the wedge. When I'm working solo like you are I also idle down when letting hands off the trolley to remove flitches, saves an accident where a flitch or the board gets thrown by the blade which would fly out the tail end but none the less it will mess up the board and slow you down, also helps stop the trolley from running away under gyroscopic forces of full power. Lube up the throttle to make it easy to power on and off.

Hey there buddy how are ya? Thank you for the video. It’s nice to see how a log is opened up and milled. Are those 1x8 boards? I sure like how efficient the Lucas mill is. Is the saw an 8-30? Thank you for the video and God bless you and yours. Please stay safe!

It is a model 8-30. there are some 8 inch boards being cut in the horizontal position. All the vertical cuts are 6" boards.

The first board you cut the horizontal in 2 passes. The second board you cut the horizontal in one pass. Any particular reason why you do this?

With the 8 inch model it's not designed to cut over 4in at a time. I just forgot to move it to the 3" mark for that 6" board

The mill is designed to cut 8 inches in one pass ive got only a 6 inch earlier mill cuts 6 inches in one pass easy so 8 inches in 2 passes seen it all now tip for you pick board up slide it onto mill then cut back unload board then do forward cut oh and how come you can cut full with board vertical

@@damienbrain8867 Lucas has a video showing why they recommend two pass horizontal cuts - has to do with sawdust ejection and blade heat/distortion causing wavy cuts. No problem with full depth vertical cuts.

Try setting the mill up on a slope.. Then while you move a board the saw's cutting a slice.
@krisk47
@krisk47 3 жыл бұрын
There are times when I've mailed on a slope unintentionally it's just the terrain.you could just let the powerhead come back but if it were to get pinched by the log and be pretty dangerous it could cause it to shoot forward or jump off the rails. And either pushing uphill or pulling uphill can get pretty tiring

Is it possible to extend the rails to cut longer boards?
@frosthornhollowfarm2912
@frosthornhollowfarm2912 5 ай бұрын
Yes I have extensions that would allow for 26 foot logs. the possibilities kind of limitless you could just keep connecting 20-ft rails if you purchase more than one frame. It would be more of a novelty to do that. with today's modern framing techniques lumber that long even beams wouldn't be necessary
@Average-AL
@Average-AL 5 ай бұрын
@@frosthornhollowfarm2912 Thank you I will rebuild an old house so I will probably need beams like 7 or 8 meters long if I take on that project. Is it as sturdy with extensions or does it get more wobbly in any way? Btw what model do you have and how wide deep boards can it cut?

Hello, does the lateral swaying of the frame have any effect on the quality of your lumber?
@frosthornhollowfarm2912
@frosthornhollowfarm2912 5 жыл бұрын
There is usually zero sway when cutting vertically. When cutting horizontaly there can be some sway. That horizontal cut will continue across the same plane through the log, so any sway just pre cuts the next board edge. Any lumber inconsistentces are due to my error or a log with a lot of tension. The mill produces very consistent and accurate lumber. The speed at which it's produced depends on the Sawyer. In this video I have large boot on to pad a severely spranged ankle, so the pace I'm cutting is much slower than is possible.

I'm considering a Lucas 8-30. I was curious if you could help me better understand a few things: 1.) how to you position logs under the mill if they are longer than the span of the post supports? 2.) have you used the slab attachment? If so, what are your experiences? 3.) how is customer support for the mill?
@frosthornhollowfarm2912
@frosthornhollowfarm2912 4 жыл бұрын
Sure no problem 1) There are several ways of doing it -Angle the log, roll one end in, slide in, roll in, straighten, roll in. (I do this if there is 1-2 logs in a load) -Move posts closer to the rail ends.(check the rails to make sure they are still parallel, correct if not) -Set the mill up around the log.(If the log is large in diameter I do this) -use extensions if you have them.(I use mine if there are a lot of long logs in a load) Without extensions i can roll a around a 17.5' log between the posts. With extensions its around 24.5'. When I start a job i set up for the longest log. 2)I have used the slabber a lot. For it to work smoothly the bar needs to be properly aligned and the teeth sharp and correctly sharpened. if either are off you will feel like you are getting nowhere and you will see it in the wood. If the teeth are incorrectly angled the teeth will leave heavy gouges in the wood as they cut. When they are correct the surface resembles band sawn wood. It is quite smooth. If the teeth are dull, sharpen or put on a fresh chain. It will save tons of time, wear and aggravation. When sharp the machine should pull itself into the wood with minimal force from you. When setting up for slabbing i try position it so I am pushing on a slight down hill. Logs that are large in diameter mill slower than smaller logs. Some logs have more tension in the wood requiring a lot of wedging as i mill. I find softwoods like pine tend to mill slower and harder than hardwoods. Overall i love it and find it a valuable investment. I have a few videos on my channel showing its use. 3) I have not had to call for customer support yet. If i do i will contact "Baileys" they are the USA distributor that i purchased from. I have heard that customer support at Lucas is excellent, and they are glad to answer any questions people have. The machine has been very reliable. If i can answer any other questions im happy to.

@@frosthornhollowfarm2912 I just recently purchased a used 827 and can honestly say I have been extremely pleased with both the mill, and baileys. Even before I bought the mill I called to price a new one (roughly 20k for a fully optioned 1030 with slabber). I told them they were out of my budget and I was going to have to buy used. The guy didnt miss a beat, gave me a full list of things to check for on a used lucas 1)hand winches work as they should for full range of travel. 2)all 4 rollers looked good on carriage 3)it had the 2 sliding rules for height adjustment 4)the blade could be removed as over tightening the allen bolts before putting lock nuts on turns a 10 minute blade change into a 4 hour swear word. 5)make sure it comes with all accessories (wheels for carriage, tool box with sharpener ect.) Then after getting it home they've answered everytime, walked me through tuning the blade angles, given tips and tricks, and it simply sounds like everyone who answers on their industrial line phone side has actually used a lucas vs simply selling them. Baileys sure does get a lot for mill parts, but they definitely make you feel ok spending your money given all the support the offer.

Your sawing ass backwards do the horizontal cut first destroying the end of every board when it drops down on the saw at the end of the cut. If this mill won't do that I don't want it
@frosthornhollowfarm2912
@frosthornhollowfarm2912 Жыл бұрын
i could do the horizontal first and I do on large timbers. they tend to sit on the blade and bind. the issue then is the lumber tails off from the opposite side and when I am working alone I would have to walk around the machine for each board. on one inch boards I'm moving so fast as I go through horizontally the board doesn't have time to drop onto the blade. if any thing it lands on the riving knife. even if it did take a little off the end it would be within the last inch. perfectly acceptable as logs are cut 6"-7" longer for trim. if your cutting logs to the finished lumber length you already messed up.
