I can replicate this method with another medium? Guoache ?
@JamesCrandallPainting
@JamesCrandallPainting 16 күн бұрын
Acrylic would be easier, since one can layer transparently using acrylic medium. Gouache can be thinned with water to a point, but it is essentially an opaque, flat medium and any underlying drawings tend to be lost early.

It's been a part of art history for centuries, so countless famous artists have used tracing techniques. Painting shouldn't just be about nice pictures and being good at line work, the main focus for a lot of artists has always been the ideas and meaning behind the composition and using tools to get that composition perfect saves so much time when you're only human and can't waste years on some desire to say you're as talented as someone else, just to find out they were using projecting and tracing techniques before you were ever born lol.

I didnt see a rabbet cut for the painting to nestle into. When I looked to buy 'picture moulding,' those mouldings were not precut for oil paintings, and most did not have the depth to make a cut. With what I saw in this video, your painting would either have to be canvas without its stretcher bars, or the painting would be sticking out the back.
@JamesCrandallPainting
@JamesCrandallPainting Ай бұрын
I guess it depends upon your artwork and to what extent you think “sticking out the back” is unacceptable. But yes, they often do a bit. This particular artwork was done on a heavy panel, linen mounted on 12mm Baltic birch ply, so it might have been flush in the back. But I’ve exhibited and sold many, many paintings where the stretchers were 1/2” thicker (possibly a bit more?) than the rabbet and happily secured with offset clips. With moulding this wide it’s virtually impossible for viewer to see the canvas edges when the painting is hanging on the wall. If you think about it, a traditional concave moulding profile have to be massively thick and heavy for a 1 1/2” stretcher to be flush at the back. If it really mattered, the moulding can be built up at the back with edge strips before finishing, but I’ve only bothered with that a couple of times. Of course, a thin-faced but deep floater frame is a good alternative when the style is more modern.

Thanks for that video, im also of the school of " Do it yourself and know its done rignt and cheaper as a bonus" Just bought myself a 2003 R1150RT, mine already has the flashing light covered by tape, would that mean that the ABS has also been annulled in my bike similar to your own process? Or could it jist mean that its deactivated itself through a fault while with a previous owner? Would love to get rid of that light if possible as it bugs me!
@JamesCrandallPainting
@JamesCrandallPainting Ай бұрын
Thanks! I’m not an expert, but when the ABS fails on its own, the braking becomes VERY bad and the bike is not really rideable, so I would assume someone has done the work to bypass and/or remove the unit on your bike. I still have the tape, but I understand that it’s just a matter of getting into the dashboard and removing the bulb. I should do that.

Notan has a history beyond being a “hipster term.” Nōtan is a Japanese term that means ‘light and dark harmony/balance.’
@JamesCrandallPainting
@JamesCrandallPainting 5 ай бұрын
My Japanese artist friend tells me that this word is never used in this context in Japan, and that it is misappropriation as used among arty English speakers. I went to Art college in the 1970-1980s (along with several Japanese students) and never heard this word until perhaps the 2000s. That’s why I suggest this usage is a modern invention.

I’d like to do this. Has you method been time tested? I’m just worried that the canvas would eventually bubble up after a few years. Especially if it was displayed under hot lights or in humid conditions. Any problems like that? How long have you been using that adhesive ? Thanks for posting
@JamesCrandallPainting
@JamesCrandallPainting 5 ай бұрын
I’ve been using this adhesive for many years and am very confident about it. My painted panels are in places all over the U.S. and Canada and I’ve never had any complaints about bubbles. If sufficient adhesive is applied to both surfaces there shouldn’t be a problem. In any case, this adhesive is archival and reversible…so any future problem that might arise can be addressed if care is taken.

Bruh... why on Earth would you leave a non-functioning part in/on the bike and then go ahead and remove all the additional ABS brake lines? Save weight and toss the cancerous lump. This video should be cited as a prime example of cognitive dissonance!
@JamesCrandallPainting
@JamesCrandallPainting 5 ай бұрын
Because the next owner might want it, it’s not in the way of anything, the weight is irrelevant, and I didn’t want to fabricate a housing for the electronics. This was the SIMPLEST solution and completely reversible (I saved the ABS hard lines)
