It understand the concept, but I don’t see an advantage in comparison to define the areas by a linework first. Which is basically the same approach of building a grid which gets refined more and more. Plus, it is not suited for all techniques. It will work great with a digital painting, and if you work mostly opaque. For watercolor or ink it doesn't work. But I love the finished result!

Honestly you can mix shapes and lines. There is no conflict. Drawing is the fundamental skill of all art. You can transition to shapes even with a pencil by drawing the shapes. There is no either/or. You can paint with shapes, but the issue is that you have to correct so much of the shapes, wasting time. Wouldn't it have been easier to create the lines and then paint the shapes?
