The glitch was fixed. 64: You can time a jump kick to reach the wall jumping section of the snow mountain. 64 DS: You can use Luigi or a well timed flutter kick from Yoshi. 64: You can ground pound the water switch in the cave to open Metal Mario’s secret door. 64 DS: You cannot do this. 64: For the jet stream missions, you can just swim through it. 64 DS: You can’t do this anymore. I imagine that when mario receives knockback under water he breathes out in pain and loses some of his oxygen, and therefore when he dies of drowning underwater while metal he ran out.

Maybe he coughs because he's not breathing the toxic gas, but smelling it. Foul odors can make people cough. Besides, the sign says Mario doesn't need to breath, but it doesn't say he loses his sense of smell. I may be wrong, but that's my theory

For those in a rush: Mario blinks every 64 frames, considering the game runs at a rough value of 29.97 FPS, mario should blink every 2 seconds, he also blinks during actions like jumping, groundpounding and wall jumping. Enemies blink differently. Going to levels wont interrupt the blinking too. Peach also blinks every 64+32 frames, equalling 96 frames every blink. Bowser also blinks, although its more complex than mario's blinking system, bowser can blink when the game is paused too. Penguins blink every 93 frames, can blink when paused, and all penguins in their respective level(s) have the same timer, so they blink at the same time. Goombas use countdowns to control blinking, they blink when the countdown has values 5 to 0. When the countdown ends, the time for the next blink is chosen at random between 30 to 79. Koopas use the same system, but they blink when the countdown reaches 4 to 0, and choose their time at random between 20 to 69, koopa the quick uses the same system, but he blinks of values between 3 to 0, and choose blinking time between 10 and 24 Bobombs use rng to manage blinking, if the rng is favorable, bobombs will blink for 15 frames. To control blinks, bobombs check if the current RNG number follows the criteria "RNG / 65536 < 1/100, if so, it blinks. A bobomb is expected to poll RNG 100 times to find a favorable RNG value, meaning it takes 3.33 seconds for a bobomb to blink, though it can take MUCH longer.
