The 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 has an exceptionally refined engine - you eould never dream that i is a diesel. YYou would immediatley notice its high pulling power throughout the entire rev range (320 lb/ft ) which make it a breeze to accellerate really fast abn to overtake + the most deliciously smooth auto gearbox hear changes I ever drove and I mean deliciously smooth (and I have merc e class too) , very smooth suspension which easily eats bumps for beakfast - anyway an exceptionally good car. Mine now has 160,000 miles and drives like new. However, you need to remember that it drives like new because it has been exceptionally well looked after. And big cars be it a Merc or a Jag or a BM are not cheap to keep them regularly serviced on time, to get the parts needed and replaced with new or of a renowned brand (not e-bay) and to look after and pressure wash any areas prone to rust. In the case of the S Type - the metal beam under the plasric door sill - if you allow the rust to start and to reach and go up the door pillars, the car is good for scrap! The Merc rusts a lot under the rear booth rubber and if you never remove the front wheel plastic covers and remove the accumulated junk, you will find a hole right behine the accellerator pedal and same on the passenger side. The water that seeps in from here would have rusted the entire floor board by the time the car fails the MOT.

one reason the finger tip gear change paddles might be attached to the wheel is to stop you changing gear when steering ? ! I try never to change a gear until the wheel is almost dead ahead . as it can lead to front wheels loading up /down etc .

How did you get on with those bullet type door mirrors? I've taken them off my MGB GT as they're more or less totally useless at giveing (me) the driver a view of what's behind them. Gone back to a nice chrome pair of the standard ones with a nice big square picture of where I've just been...

My MGB GT is absolutely standard and runs REALLY well , the performance seems terrific. It will easily cruise at the national speed limit and could put another 30 on top of that easily and quite rapidly. Friends I take out on it are amazed and absolutely refuse to believe it's a standard engine. The trick that made all the difference was to statically time the ignition.

The inlets look fantastic, but the cylinders will get scored without filtration for street driving (for racing we don't care since the engine gets rebuilt periodically) The older MG's with dual SU carbs have decent air cleaners, with internal air horns. These would perform well with all the upgrades on this engine. I hated their appearance, so my solution was to use the original air horns with Weiand Ram-flo air cleaners. The filtration wasn't as fine as the original paper element, but did provide SOME protection for the engine.

Nice video but I would prefer good air filtration with a couple of K&Ns installed; almost certainly better on filtration than the Pipercross Filter socks you said you installed later on the air rams.

More details please - new tyre size info please - AND how do the fatter tyres affect the steering - the stock steering is hard at low speeds - no power steer remember ... Sadly the engine is not getting cool air from outside - I remember my B ran much better on cool days - very important ... Glad you installed an electronic ignition system - but note - they are not all the same - the better ignition systems control engine knock - take advantage of the higher compression and high octane fuel ... As I Say - more details please - more Quantitative Info - this engineer wants more ...

FYI, having a intake setup like the car shown is OK if you're going to race your car, but if you're expecting to cruise on the highways at speed for distances you're going to see air fuel ratios in the high 16s to low 17s without some restriction at the intake. I find putting the Cooper cans back on took the cruse AFR down to 14:1. Running at cruise with a 16:1+ AFR is not good. K&N Cones are not much better either, that's why I went to Coopers because the two holes in the front of the carb which lets air into the domes need more of an atmospheric depression that the other type of filters or trumpets allow. Heavy gear oil in the dashpots or stiffer springs might help, but it also affects the lower settings more as well. Again for racing it doesn't matter, but for street you're looking to possibly hurt your pistons with AFRs like that for distance. P.S. Mine is a 10:1 comp MGB with a D9 cam, similar to the Piper 285 and currently the HIF 4s I have are setup with SAE20 oil in the dashpots and #6 needles with Cooper Cans and Wix filters and they're about perfect. 12:5 to 13:5 in most cases with AFRs at 14:5 at cruise never seeing higher than 15:1 on light throttle.

Nicely thought-out mods, enough to give it a chance at the traffic lights and make it more comfortable on a run. I'd start with an earlier model, however. Mine was a '66, with the handsome crackle-painted dash (metal!) and large chrome-ringed instruments.

I have a 2013 3.0d premium luxury model which I have owned for 6 years, but with a Stage 1dyno remap giving 288 bhp and 444 ilb ft torque. The torque is amazing. Its an effortlessly seriously quick car. I agree with most of what you say, but disagree with your criticism of its refinement. In my opinion its superb and on a smooth road surface almost silent. Far quieter in fact than a Tesla that I recently rode in. It has 19 inch wheels which I think are just right. I have fitted 255 40 R 19 100Y Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres running at 2.5 bar pressure front and rear which are slightly wider and larger diameter than stock but improve the look, handling and refinement of the car considerably. Maybe you should try these tyres. They are by far the best tyres I have had on the car. The other thing is that Italian Racing Red looks stunning and really suits the car and makes the usual whites, silvers, greys and blacks of other cars which seem popular volours these days look so drab.

Had my one for a few weeks now. Black 2.7 sport xs on 18” mercury alloys 86000 miles, Gave £1500 for it has full service history. Bought it from a guy who was selling it as it was his fathers car who passed away. First day driving the coolant light came on because the coolant pipe on the right side of the block failed. Spent the last few days doing the repair which consists of removing the aux belt and the power steering pump and a few pipes there is a few forums that consult this issue and the part is known as the water inlet pipe. Besides this the car is top notch. Just glad the part failed early on as I have a big road trip planned in a couple of weeks. Good review

Hello there. The Jaguar XK 4.2 N/a with the 60th anniversary body kit is my dream car. I’m quite young but old enough to be able to afford to buy one. What I’m not sure is the running costs. It would likely be my only car due to space. Do you know what it would be like to run? I am not expecting an ultra low figure as it’s not realistic. It’s an older Jag with a big V8 and not a brand new 1.0L Fiesta or something. I’m less concerned about fuel costs as I don’t do that many miles, but more concerned about the price sensors when they need replacing and the general costs to run it.

Thanks for your review. It is a comfortable car and I think it handles well. My SE 2.7 diesel has a heated windscreen, two stage heated seats, front parking sensors, and the sport button just changes the gear change points. MPG varies a lot. On a long run at steady speeds I can get over 40 mpg and high forties on occasions. Around town from cold it struggles to better 20mpg. About 34 mpg average for me. I sometimes drive 3 hours plus and it is very comfortable. I use a Bluetooth adapter that links to my phone.
