1:21 Is that where the taking islands in Africa came from then? I liked that piece with Mr. Sakamoto.

This is the kind of bass playing that makes aspiring bass players throw their shit in the trash can and pick another instrument. RIP Karn

I've recently taken up playing bass (having previously played guitar). Whilst there's a lot that is shared between the two, the techniques for 'proper' bass playing are something of a steep learning curve! Watching Japan's bass player, i have a new level of respect for artists who can do what he does!

Love it when the mix has Mick's bass up front. I'm guessing he may have made it a point by the time they recorded this.

I could easily see Pina Bausch's company using Mick's music. Maybe they already have?

And kudos to Mick for not taking the opportunity to badmouth Sylvian, who definitely deserved it, and kept it focused on creativity. Very rare.

Listening to this takes me right back to being at Uni. Walking back to student accommodation late at night with this on my Walkman. How the hell can this be 40 years ago???

Such a shame they spent so much time making unlistenable experimental crap, they had potential but blew it.

I'm a new fan, having just discovered "Gentlemen..." two years ago. So even with many suggestions that Japan took directly from Roxy Music and Bowie's "Berlin" era... look how important they became to the development of the New Romantic style... Duran Duran of course, but also Gary Numan, Soft Cell, Eurythmics, I would even call The Cure around the era of Pornography/Japanese whispers. And the bass style in Paul Young's songs... I knew all this above well, but after listening to "Oil on Canvas" I realized who did it first. Japan

My favourite band from the 80's. There were other bands/artists that were weird and wonderful as well. Kraftwerk, Kate Bush, Gary Numan, Ippu Do. Good times.

The first rap kind of worked out OK but second one lost its way. But Mick sounded great, A very brave performance by both of them. Angie being a bit more rhythmic would have fixed things up

Good song, but doesn't sound like a typical single. Surprised it did so well. It's always a nice surprise when the general public picks up on a quality song or album that's outside the mainstream box.
