originally transmitted 24.9.81. still a bit fuzzy quality wise but worth a watch, especially for the late great Mick Karn - love the suit, love the moves..

Love Japan. They didn't have much airplay that I recall and I am not sure even how I happened upon the group. Anyway, they became my obsession for quite a few years. Sylvian was a huge crush. Ah, those were the days ...

Saw them in St. Albans 1979. Went along to see support band. Heard them do Rhodesia in sound Check and just had to watch them. Loved ever since. Awesome.

Freddy the 80,s were amazing. Happiest time of my life. Music wise yeah l was the only gay in the village and had great friends who never even mentioned it. We all sat on the wall with our big music players listening to whatever we liked. Mine were all New Romantics.

We can define David Sylvian's voice as Slowed Down in the 80s or Nightcore in the 1970s

MsrAlaindeFerrier got it right. Nothing/Nobody to compare them to. STILL my all-time favorite band. Always thought I'd like to have been there on top of Apple, with the Beatles. Now I know I'd rather have been here, when they taped this show. Seems like the perfect environment/stage/audience and song. Thanks toolateforheaven. Thanks Mick.

Thanks tons for posting Took me right back to the 1st time i heard Japan and watched fervently on TOTP Hey, every day is spent listening to Japan /David Sylvian !!Thanks Alain :-) Still regard them/him in a complete elegant league of their/his own and like David always said.. 'I write for a limited audience'. So basically,if you're in,then your in! I don't make any connection/comparison to Duran or other contempory bands Style elegance music,untouchable by the rest simply.

wonderfully chic JAPAN . One of the jewels of the most elegant decade, the early 80s. Then when Madonna and Prince arrived the 80s lost its élan. Viva JAPAN, HUMAN LEAGUE, HEAVEN 17, AZTEC CAMERA and all those fine groups. How about VIC GODARD in the LP "SONGS FOR SALE". Genial bunch, all of them.

No rob dean on guitar..the record company ariola hansa reissued this track.This was from august 1981.Quiet life was from the album of the same name from late 79/80.Duran ripped them off and also the image but were nowhere near as great as this band.Not in the same league or class..try as they might.Rip Mick K.

where did hungry like the wolf sound like japan? or save a prayer or ordinary world or the reflex or new moon on monday or union of the snake or a view to a kill? or is there something i should know? or all she wants is or come undone or skin trade or notorious or when did davy sylvian look like simon le bon or nick rhodes in 1984? sit down, and be quiet. duran duran were a giant compare to japan. sold fifty times japan, at least. so there was a problem in quality somewhere. jelous japan fans. they had the same influences. thats where any similarity ends.
@iamrhino79756 жыл бұрын
Yes but Japan had clearly ripped off Roxy Music especially on this track.
@koukouvania6 жыл бұрын
they copied Roxy but were totally original at the same time. Duran Duran certainly copied JP.
@albertochirinos806 жыл бұрын
Get a clue. First of all, Japan provided the blueprint for DD, almost a carbon copy. Then, while DD was getting stratospheric fame, Japan was breaking up. Japan was inspired by Glam rock (New York Dolls, Roxy Music at the beginning, electronic disco later)....It is a unique case, since I think DD was not as experimental as Japan was, they took that already pre-made sound and added the right seasonings (Sex Pistols' guitar riffs, Chic's bass and drums), to make it even better.
@voltaire20016 жыл бұрын
But,and this is coming from a Roxy and Ferry fan big time,I think Japan was so much more unique than Roxy could ever be.Sylvian's voice cannot be matched.Karn's bass will never be duplicated.

why would they even call themselves 'Japan', theyre not even the same band as the group that put out 'Adolescent Sex'....so weird.
@sexypara8 жыл бұрын
+Rick Deckard They were stuck for a name when they started out. Someone suggested it and they couldn't think of a better one. As for not being the same band, they were self taught musicians who progressed quickly. They disregarded their first two albums and came to see Quiet Life as their first proper album.
@illumidas7 жыл бұрын
The difference certainly is astounding. Their sound developed immensely over their short lifespan. Sylvian continued to become increasingly more experimental in his solo career. His most recent work is spoken word over minimalist ambient sounds.
