originally transmitted 17.1.83. acoustic version of a track from the Quiet Life album. *just relistened to this - apologies for the ultra high sound levels - hope it doesn't spoil the clip too much*

He's so talented and beautiful. I love the contrast of his unique and deep voice with his ethereal and delicate looks. I'm sure David Sylvian is at least 1/4 elf.

I can see now why he changed to solo career. He never wanted to be a pop star, he is a pure artist. That's so sad that he probably retired and doesn't make music anymore....

My favourite Japan song. The album version is full of emotion and soars with its use of strings.

Beyond brilliant! I watched it when it was aired and was blown away by this version. 40 years on it still makes the hairs stand up.

Saw David in 1988 in Los Angeles when I was in high school. Half of Japan were on stage with him.

Met Steve after the show. After he came out from the restaurant on the corner. Signed autographs and took photos with fans. Came close to David, but he kept walking and eventually went straight from the restaurant to his hotel shuttle.

@@marshas.9218 awesome story ! what was Steve like ?
@marshas.92182 жыл бұрын
@@haroharoharoharoo Steve was outgoing and very friendly. He was a bit tipsy from the after party, but happy to talk with fans. I said that we fans would love it if he and David would return to Los Angeles more frequently. Steve responded that if it were up to him, they would come more frequently.

David was never gay. Big myth, started by his own interview quote claiming every member of Japan had had an affair with a man except one. Likely the manufacturing of their publicist, a woman always trying to stir up something to get journalists wagging their pens. Later, in adulthood, he admitted it wasn't true and just the kind of thing he used to say to get attention. That, of course, was in an era where Bowie's claims to be bi were still okay, and fashionable before the advent of AIDS/HIV. And so it goes... And yes, Duran Duran lifted much of their image inspiration from this unique and incredible band.

He has such a distinctive voice. His lyrics are usually very poetic.

He always wanted his solo albums to be lyrically strong more than anything and it shows on albums like Brilliant Trees and Secrets of the Beehive. Listening to his music, sometimes I'm so compelled to regard him as a poet too, ngl.

Never seen this clip before despite being a Sylvian fan ever since ... 1983. So, thanks a lot.

Who could have known that this song would prove to be so significant to me after nearly 30 years - especially this acoustic version, laid bare much and stripped of unnecessary beautification. Like a mirror of the self, it returns me to my inner being.

..armed with elegance, genius and bar chords David Sylvian strums his way through my raw emotions of a wasted youth.... and somehow (I imagine) I am closer to understanding why planet Earth just maybe, is the only planet that matters in the void (that we are told is the universe?)..... (but, wtf do I know)....

It's interesting that he has said in interviews that he only regards Ghosts from his compositions with Japan of any worth. And yet here he is in 1983, and I also heard him perform this on the Fire In The Forest tour.
