You not making any sense my man. The main drains are meant to run on a syphon all the time and can be any height as long as they do not pull air from the surface (the lower the better) , and the overflow/emergency drain is meant to set the height of the water in the overflow which will stop the noise of water entering the overflow. The gate valve should be as close to the drain outlet as possible so there is no sound of the water running through the pipes (as they are full with no air) In your budget setup one primary drain should have no gate valve and run full syphon the whole time, the 2nd drain should have a gate valve and this is use to effectively make the pipe smaller to enable it to also run under a full syphon to stop the noise (smaller pipe allows less water through it). As your setup did not use a large enough pipe for the 1st main drain, you added a 2nd one and now have to play silly games. The surface skimming drain (aka emergency drain) should be large enough to take the entire water volume should the main drain(s) get blocked somehow. By putting stand pipes on the top of the drains you are preventing the system working correctly (compounded by the air hole and them being up at the water surface). Just remove the top stand pipes and make the height of the primary drains about 1/3 of the overflow box height. If you don't have enough flow to run one drain pipe at full syphon without a gate valve you might as well remove the 2nd drain (which you probably should do anyways as the emergency drain won't cut it) or make it a emergency-emergency drain 🤣. To make the water height in the overflow adjustable, just add a small 3D printed sleeve you can slide higher or lower on the emergency drain to raise the water height and prevent the noise coming from flowing out of the tank and dropping.
@SaltwaterTherapyTVКүн бұрын
@@DoYouEvenFishTank If you watch the video all the way through you’ll see what I’m talking about. In a bean animal style system the primary drain is meant to be operated as a full syphon, while the secondary drain should be taking in a trickle of water and not pulling a full syphon, not the other way around. The height of your emergency standpipe doesn’t actually dictate the water level inside of the overflow box, but simply allows you to move the primary drain up or down (which ultimately dictates the water level in the overflow box). While it is true that the primary and secondary can be raised, they can only be raised to a certain height because of they are too high the emergency drain will always be fully operational, thus preventing your actual drains from ever pulling a syphon. Also if they are sticking out of the top you wouldn’t be able to put the acrylic lid on the box. Also one single drain pipe has more than enough volume to take in my entire flow, as does my emergency. I have tested this by blocking both drains and letting my emergency take on all the flow and it works just fine. I can tell you didn’t watch my whole video because at the end I clearly show my new plumbing where I removed one gate valve. Respectfully, please watch something all the way through before trying to spread misinformation.

I figured I couldn’t rely on friends to understand either if they are not in the hobby. I’ve had fresh water tanks before and they are pretty easy. So you’re saying there’s a world where I can go on vacation for a week with a salt water tank and not have to rely on anyone?
@SaltwaterTherapyTV2 күн бұрын
I would say if you have an auto top off for evaporation and a doser for your corals, you can get by with doing zero maintenance for a week so long as you have someone come over to feed your fish every few days. I've been using All For Reef for about 18 months now. I started to notice my corals were not looking quite as healthy as I thought they should be, given my test results for Ca, Alk, Mg, No3, Po4 and weekly water changes. I just felt as though something maybe missing even though I am using All For Reef. I sent out a water sample on Dec. 8th. When I received my test results from ATI. I have 3 elements that came back as below normal and one critically low. They were Potassium, Manganese & Iodine was critically low. the test also showed high levels as well. So I sat down and made a list of what I dose to the tank. I use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals, All for Reef and Chaeto Gro from Brightwell Aquatics. I compared the listed elements for All for Reef and Chaeto Gro. I found that I am dosing some redundant elements. I have decided to discontinue the Chaeto Gro and to supplement the three elements that are low and wait about a month for the tank to settle out before sending out another ICP test kit. I just received my ATI trace elements when I got home last night and added a small dose of each. I also bought a trace element home test kit from Red Sea. The only thing I can't test for is the Manganese. So I only want to add a small amount of Manganese and verify my adjustments with another ICP test kit. While looking at the elements All for Reef does contain, I noticed that it does NOT contain Potassium (I am not sure why? Chemistry compatibility?) and even though the All for Reef does contain Iodine & Manganese my corals are consuming these elements faster than my water changes and daily dosage of All for Reef can supply. Just thought I would share my findings and I hope it may help someone else along the way. Moral of the story, Don't just rely on the All for Reef to supply everything because it can't. It can only supply what the mix has in it and cannot compensate for coral consumption.

That's a nice setup! I didn't see an ATO in there. Did you work that in somewhere? The only thing I would change would be two separate return lines with two pumps. Somewhere down the road, one will fail to restart after a power blink and Murphy dictates it will happen when your not home....and I second the comment of lighting in the stand, under cabenet lights or the IP65 LED tape strip work really well. With the tape strip LEDs, you can even get RGBW so you can change colors to spiff it up for show!

Kalkwasser in the ato or dosed and magnesium chloride is probably the easiest beginner method. Plus you get a higher pH which will effect the chemistry of everything else positvely. With that much water volume and small coral mass you might end up with elevated trace elements.

It seems like you might be running to much water through your overflow, beananimal has a wonderful write up that you could follow with your box design. My preference is to have one subsurface with a strainer run a gate valve on that one, one stand pipe as your surface skimmer and then another slightly taller for emergency overflow. Tune the gate valve until the surface skimmer is just barely siphoning water, gives a silent operation but goes out of tune easily, which i prefer as then i know something is wrong
@SaltwaterTherapyTV24 күн бұрын
I think the only real way to solve the issues are with straight standpipes in the overflow instead of a J shape pulling a siphon. That way I can get the water level above the holes, not sure if I’m understanding correctly, but sounds like you’re suggesting something similar? Might have to give it a try! I’m running my return pump at about 3/5 what it’s max GPH is and my overflow box is rated for much more than my current pump is flowing so not sure if that would be the issue. Anyways thanks for the input, sounds like you know what you’re doing and it works well!

His boxes are purposefully built just below the top of the glass to prevent the issues with loud dropping water like all the others have. He'll also customize anything you want. Heck, if you wanted him to build you one to match your existing holes so you didn't have to tear your tank apart I'm sure he could do that too. Happy reefing!

The modular Marine overflow wouldn't solve the water splashing into the sump from the primary drain
@boj4klayman91924 күн бұрын
What the modular Marine would do is raise the water level in the entire tank hiding it behind the rim, they're specialized for rimmed tanks, there's a cutout in the external box allowing it to sit as high as possible.
@yowowaho24 күн бұрын
@@boj4klayman919 Right, and this in turn lowers the bulkheads through the glass which empty into deeper water. Less waterfall effect like so many other overflows have problems with. I wasn't talking about the sump noise.
