Huge thanks to Roger for his expertise and to Ken for moderating. Just following up on one of the final points from the webinar: A list of vendors who have experience representing publishers in anti-digital piracy claims would be super useful! I checked the email I got when the recording became available, but I didn't see any lists of qualified vendors (or links to same).

Horrible thing because you cant rely one the numbers and they change things every year.
@BookIndustryStudyGroup2 ай бұрын
Could you explain your comment about relying on the numbers? We don't understand what you mean. As for the updates, the nature of books evolves every year, and BISAC categories evolve along with the nature of published books. That's by design.

Around the 47-minute mark, you suggest that people can get an idea of the quality of a translation by running the translated version through AI again to translate it back into its original language. This is a potentially bad piece of advice - you should only do this experiment if you actually understand both languages! The problem is that the errors made by AI when translating into the second language may be made again (or undone, so to speak) when the AI translates the text back into the first language. So you might think, "ok, the back-translated version sounds about right, so the translation must be okay" but in reality the translation may have various grammar and mistranslation issues. I recently had this situation in my dayjob (as a translator) when I received a piece with various mistranslations, unidiomatic sentences etc. by someone who didn't speak my target language. I wanted to make him understand the problems with the translation, so I thought, "let me quickly run this through the same AI and hopefully the output will sound as odd and confusing as the translated version" - but it didn't. The AI mistranslated the text again and recreated the original version (with just minor differences, as shown on your slide in the video). I suppose it has to do with how the engine works behind the scenes. It doesn't actually understand the text but rather looks for the translation that has the highest possibility of being correct. When it makes the wrong choice in one direction, it's likely to make the same mistake in the other direction. So authors who are trying to get a cheap translation should always - always! - let a native speaker look at it and not just rely on such a back-translation experiment. (You'd think that this doesn't need to be said but I've encountered people who wanted to selfpublish and get their books translated cheaply but had absolutely unrealistic expectations.) This was a very interesting webinar. Thank you! I also just had a quick look at Nuanxed's site, and it seems that they still care about quality, not quantity, despite the emphasis on affordability, so this is refreshing to see. (There are too many big translation agencies whose focus nowadays is only on quantity.) Kudos for that! 🙂

AI for fact checking, i would pump the brakes on given that it hallucinates so many things.

Agree! We need to do our own fact-checking on what AI produces. Otherwise, do we plan to simply abandon citing original sources of information that AI uses?

Hi there! In the q&a Klaus mentioned a ragged right alignment is best to ensure indesign doesn't change the "cloud" of white space around the words, and all letter and line spacing is maintained. In all the examples shown, justified type is used with uneven spacing between words. Could you speak to this? I believe it is still a preference among readers to have justified type, and the last time I read a novel with a right rag, I found the readability deteriorated due to the eye tracking between lines.

Why are they not including the S and G in their answers to questions about ESG? Those are the aspects most people are raising concerns about. ESG is not JUST about sustainability.
@BookIndustryStudyGroup Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry we missed your question when you asked it several months ago. As a global company, Woodland has a lot of exposure in markets (like the EU) where ESG reporting is widely expected. In planning this webinar, which was for a U.S. or North American audience, we gave them the advice that ESG reporting is not as widely accepted in this market, and I suggested they focus on environmental reporting. If ESG reporting becomes more widely expected in the U.S. market, we'd certainly change our answer on that.

Absolutely wonderful talk! The speaker, Sebastian Mayeres, in this presentation, puts to words everything that I have been struggling to tell the decision-makers at the publishing house that I work for, in a rhetorical way that anticipates their questions/concerns surrounding the topic of "data through the pov of the publisher." I found the question period highly useful for this same purpose, as the host, Brian O'Leary (executive director of BISG), anticipates many of the questions that more traditionally-operated publishing houses might have. Mayeres answers all of these questions and to me convincingly makes the case for why publishers must bust down their data siloes in order to increase their profit margins on their book sales, which has the added benefit of increasing employee morale and productivity. The topic of data can be prickly amongst decision-makers but Mayeres walks this line superbly, which makes sense after 20 years in the publishing industry. He makes starting the conversation on "data" so accessible even though he is aware of the gulf that he is speaking across. Thanks for giving an insightful voice to an important discussion.

Hello, I would like to know if you have a solution for this problem in the price and stock availability integration. Here is my detailed explanation: I owned an woocomerce store, and it still in developing. I plan to sell a different books without having a physical stocks. I will only ordered a books if there is a customer plan to buy it. But my problem is that how can I automatically get the stock availability of the item? Because I plan to make a big manga store without having a physical stocks and I don't want to check the item availability every time into your page/supplier page to check the item if it is available or out of stock. So do you have a plugin or api that can automatically send the stocks information from your inventory to my woocomerce product page? Is there
