Review showed he was simply behind the curve on the tone that Hughes was setting. He picked on scenes that worked much better IN CONTEXT of the tone and the flow of the film. Humans can simply "miss it" on occasion. It's a classic.

I watched until Siskel started speaking. I laughed out loud, commented and moved on. I just can't take him as seriously as he takes himself.

The thing about Spaceballs is, it's comedy is good when it hits which is most of the time. However, as a satire of Star Wars, it doesn't hit the mark. I think Brooks should have worked with someone who understood the franchise.

Ebert: "You're gone WAY overboard on this one, Gene." No kidding, the dude was uptight. I agree with Roger on this one. The movie was funny throughout the movie and yes, Lisa, playing the perfect woman does teach the boys a lesson which made the movie even better in my opinion. "You had to be big shots didn't you. You had to show off. When are you gonna learn that people will like you for who you are, not for what you can give them."

I know most guys were about Loni Anderson's huge knockers. Me? I was more about the tight sexy little figure Jan Smithers had. I thought she was the knockout of the two. She was sexy as hell in this segment.

I mean, I don't agree with Roeper's specific gripes, but it IS a terribly overrated movie (in my opinion). It fails miserably to capture the feeling of the books at all, almost to the point that I wonder if anyone involved actually read them. The hobbits are terribly miscast, and it was very distracting for me. There are some good things, and "Fellowship" is the best of the trilogy, but I was somewhat let down when I left the theater. I think the books are basically impossible to film, as Christopher Tolkein himself said. I doubt the man himself would have approved either.

"Better off Dead" wasn't just another 80s teen movie, it was in a unique genre; sui generis, all of its own. As such, it remains as fresh and watchable today, as it was when it was released (unlike many of those 80s teen movies). It was offbeat, sure, but that's what made it unique, hilarious, and wonderful. There were so many great and memorable scenes in this movie.

Siskel flat out trashed The NeverEnding Story. That was a staple of my youth, more than any Spielberg children’s film of that era. The special effects were first rate and the leading actor was certainly not a dullard. I hate how these guys could make or break creative work with their opinions.

Where is Roeper now?
@generalesdeath5836Ай бұрын
Roeper’s problem is that he’s reviewing the film as he thinks his idea of the “normal person” would view it, rather than reviewing its quality and faithfulness as an adaptation of an existing story with a massive fanbase. Ebert made the ONLY valid criticisms here when he said that he felt “the tall people” had eclipsed the Hobbits compared to how the book was.
