Siskel: "Enough good jokes that I'm glad I saw so that I'm recommending the film ... slightly."

I love this movie and watch it more often than I like to admit. The term "ludicrous speed" is my favorite and I use it whenever I get the chance.

It's great how Siskel the one who views movies as art liked it while Ebert who views movies as an experience didn't like it. That's the joy of Siskel and Ebert . Also Spaceballs is better than they give credit to and has aged like a fine wine given the omnipresence of Star Wars material

It was funny cuz Mel Brooks included some actual jokes instead of just references. References all by themselves are usually not funny. He got worse as time went on. Dracula Dead and Loving it was terrible, so was Robin Hood Men in Tights.

Of all the Siskel and Ebert split reviews, I think they come closest in this one. On a scale of 1 - 100, I would say Gene gave it a 51% and Roger gave it a 49%, or something to that effect.

The part of the movie where they put in the VHS of Spaceballs to figure out what to do next is the best part.

"So, Lone Star! Now you see that evil will always triumph -- because good is DUMB!" I loved this movie. It had some great lines from writers who loved science fiction as much as I do. Everyone condemned Spaceballs as a far-too-late Star Wars parody (including Roger), but Mel Brooks was smart enough to treat it as, really, a riff on science fiction media as a whole. And I thought it worked for the most part. I don't think Spaceballs would have come out as good as it did if it came out closer to the release of the original trilogy. Besides, Hardware Wars beat Brooks to the punch by over a decade. But you can never go wrong with mocking the "moichendizin! moichendizin!" blitzes that was initiated by the classic Star Wars trilogy in the first place. Ironic, that, considering that Lucas had no problem with Brooks mocking Star Wars so long as he didn't actually do merchandizing for it. Which was probably for the best.

The thing about Spaceballs is, it's comedy is good when it hits which is most of the time. However, as a satire of Star Wars, it doesn't hit the mark. I think Brooks should have worked with someone who understood the franchise.

Spaceballs will always have a special place in my heart because that's what we rented after we had to put our dog down when I was a kid.
