Great video. Anything you buy for a boat from a marineshop or from the official supplier is far overpriced. Same thing with anything you buy for horses. Having a boat and/or horses means you got money. Some forty years ago the standing rigging on my first boat needed to be replaced. I asked for a quote and was shocked. Went to the local hardware store and got the same materials for 10% of the quote.

I too mourn the loss of those bells, and all the history - and knowledge - held within them. I've always thought that sound is underrated and am glad to see that science is beginning to catch up with Ancient understanding of its medicinal and spiritual uses. Yes, its a little odd perhaps within a sailing video but thank you for having the courage to voice the thought. Those pauses for that thought are much needed, and never more so than now.

Hi Fionna, I think sometimes it's easy for global policies to be rolled out under the radar. Single noise complaints in a local area silencing a church can seem to be a one-off event. But if people become aware of the bigger picture and the systematic nature of certain things happening in lots of different places at the same time, there is more of a chance of a mass awakening, which I believe is what is most urgently needed in this corrupted world. Once someone wakes up to one small part of the scam, it's much easier for them to see other false narratives for what they really are. Once the curtain is pulled back for enough people, the weak, soulless puppet masters are exposed and their apparent 'power' evaporates. I guess you may know where I'm coming from and I hope as time goes by the number of others who can read this and 'get' what I'm saying will increase. I believe the tipping point is not too far away... God bless, Chris

@@SailingBritaly Oh yes, I am where you are and, frankly, have been since the early 70's. I saw a clip of Uncle Klaus giving forth when I was a young teenager and he still had hair and every hackle rose, not that I could tell you why. I have never forgotten it and I am sure it made me very sensitive to seemingly random events thereafter - or perhaps, it would be more accurate to say I became aware of consequences so tended to view things happening in the world in a wider context. I think a great deal of what has unfolded over the decades has far less to do with being 'done to us' as being 'done for them', which is a human characteristic. That does not make it any more comfortable to be on the receiving end. I didn't spot the bells so am very very grateful to you for bringing their fate and the significance of that to the fore. Time reveals all - even my grown up children have, a couple of them, come and said 'Mum, you were right.' Words I would have preferred to not have to hear. No, I [we] didn't comply but I live where I do not need to so it cost nothing to ignore the madness. The world is turning.

Thank you my friend, for the smiles at the end. The only possible improvement would be to repeat that performance on a unicycle. I have one handy if you ever make your way to Wick in Caithness, Scotland. [bought for my old enough to know better husband, never used past the first few attempts, oddly enough] As an afterthought - the work people once did is extraordinary - or, rather, their ability to do it is.

Hi Fionna, your unicycle suggestion had me laughing - that would take the silliness up a notch for sure! I subsequently found an old painting showing the scene of about 5,000 people digging that canal by hand. There were lots of tents and a surprising number of ladies involved in the construction. Mind boggling. Fair winds! Chris 👍

@@SailingBritaly I think we forget that our ancestors shaped the world we know now using little more than the equivalent of a toothbrush and a teaspoon. How they drained the Carse of Stirling, to name but one landscaping achievement, is astonishing. I have difficulty imagining today's people even starting the job. I can vouch for the o ring splice kit it really is a great bit of kit. I used one many times while maintaining foundry injector machines (molten metal injecting) And Rams holding dies together at 100/200 ton pressures Worked a treat and much better than some of the kits with pre made rings that were never the best quality. a couple of handy tips just in case... - try to find a new seal that has a stainless steel spring inside it. Especially for salt water use. -make sure your impeller doesn't run dry when you start up the engine after repairing this. Sometimes it helps closing the seacock and pouring some water in the strainer first. -After a while these seals eat into the shaft and you get a groove where the lip is. That's. when you buy a new shaft. -when the inside of the pump lid is marked by the impeller you can put the lid on backwards

Great video and gave me some things to check on my 2003 Volvo penta however it appears no blow-by on my injectors. The handle stay flat on top of the engine block. My symptoms are hard to start, once started idle is low even with 3/4 throttle set and white smoke from exhaust. Eventually revs come up and all ok however when put back to idle, white smoke and engine sounds like it is stalling. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I think when you are British in France it is easy to get lost in translation. The French never were fluent in any foreign language. When I studied English in Holland there was an exchange with the Sorbonne. Funny thing was that we had to adress them in French as their English was complete gibberish to us. Furthermore I have a feeling that Brexit made the French make it even more difficult for anyone speaking English, on purpose. A Brit and a polish woman are travelling the canals as well. Good deeds sailing is their youtube channel. Might be good for you to follow their season 2, in order to see what you are in for. In episode 16 I saw sth that was absolutely hilarious.

about that first railway bridge...on the bridge itself is an orange light. When that's on you are allowed to go under it assuming there's enough space. When the bridge is in operation it will turn off and you have to wait until you get the big green light on shore. VHF 68 until Budabrug in Brussels. Switch to 20 for Budabrug. They will take your information. It's also likely that canals/locks in the centre of France will be closed for winter. Best to plan ahead for that so you can pick a nice spot to wait it out.
@SailingBritaly

Hi Michael, thank you for the info. I was seeing a red light at the first bridge and didn't want to 'run' it. We found a place to overwinter in France - the journey continues in the videos. Cheers, Chris :-)
@BaschyGoode
@BaschyGoode 18 күн бұрын
Regarding your first bridge: when there is a white light over the red light(s) it means that you allowed to pass under the bridge when you safely fit and the red light(s) only appear to vessels which can’t pass under. When there is only one red light it says „bridge is preparing to open“ Two horizontal red lights says „passage forbidden“ and indicates that it will not be opened soon (here you need to call the bridgemaster and when successful they will change the light to one red) In contrast to the above: when there are two red lights on top of each other it says that the unit is permanently closed (i.e. for maintenance)
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 18 күн бұрын
The red light stumped me as I did a CEVNI course (years ago) and this is what I remembered: "Passage through movable bridges may be regulated by the following signals: (a) One or more red lights mean: Passage prohibited" This is copied and pasted from the CEVNI regs. Later in the trip we stopped seeing red lights at bridges, although I'd got used to it by then. Thank you for watching and commenting, Chris 👍

Hi there, this job was a fair few years ago now ('Baby' Emma is 7 now - where has that time gone?!). In fact, it's almost time for me to do this job again if I want to stick to Volvo's recommendations... The old saildrive seal was in near perfect condition, despite its age, so I would say the 7 year interval is far too short. I reckon you could double that and not have any problems, although I would add "caveat emptor" to cover my behind! This job isn't as bad as it might look and we've had zero problems with any of the areas worked on since this was done. Cheers, Chris

Once again finding your old videos saves me stuffing up and reinventing the wheel. I had started splicing dyneema for our stays to prevent excessive movement of the new solar panels which live on huge (very high) extensions to our original 2” stainless tube davits. I ran out of time and just grabbed some nylon rope and turnbuckles (which do work but it’s not the permanent solution we sought). Fast forward a few weeks and Linda found some loose ends in the middle lifeline, meaning it needs replacing. As we all know, the stainless wire lifelines in a boat most likely are the same age. The others are probably suspect too, whether we can see this or not. I personally remember the shock of a mast coming down while sailing my first boat as a young teenager. Never saw it coming. So, that means replacing all the lifelines and I’m so pleased to be watching your video tonight. That’s the great thing about nowhere to go while spare parts are delivered. Our high pressure injector fuel pump is dead. So many small jobs to be tackled while we can’t sail off. We love the rigging doctor too. Thanks very much for making this video Chris. Separate subject: Your travels along the canals give us a practical reason to not go with a multihull once our time is up with this mono. Those canals are surely too narrow to permit the beam of a normal 35 odd foot cat through.
