That to me was the true gold nugget of this video: I play chess since my childhood and in the last 10 years quite a lot. Periodically. On and off. around 1300 elo. Was at almost 1600 in blitz in my best times. One thing I never did though is what you said in 6:40 "I would take 15minutes to understand this position" How casually you said that...that to me is a complete eyeopener what I have to do to improve in chess. I never took that long not even once. Longest games I ever played online were 15minutes each. And offline with no clock...depends. But I dont think it surpasses that timeframe either. Or if so, then extremely rarely. In other words I can tell you straight up the Number 1 mistake that low elo players do is they dont take enough time (say even 3 minutes) PER POSITION. EVER. So that leads to them never ever being able to understand the true threats after 4 moves in most positions. Even if they saw the position a million times. Because every single time they did not take the time to go into enough depth. And I can also tell you I only occasionally use the analysis tool. Maybe sometimes to find out a move here and there. But merely for tactics. Not for 4-6 moves deep strategies. And definitely not in every game i lost. Tl;dr: Biggest mistake is, low elo players dont ALLOW themselves to analyse deep enough in terms of moves ahead

I am sorry about that. Not everybody is as fast as you. In fact, many more people say that I go too fast and should slow down :) Nevertheless, I would really appreciate if you could elaborate on your feedback.

How on earth does the timer work? He's got like 12 seconds left, his opponent a little more than 3 minutes. He's clock tick's away another 5 seconds, he moves and now he should be left with 7 seconds but if keep an eye on the timer it jumps back to 15 seconds and so on and so on. It cuts ( or eat his time ) the time but forever jumps back to more seconds left and not less on his clock???? 😮

The term "hope chess" refers to the beginner practice of making moves without looking at the opponent's replies. They make moves and just hope that they can deal with whatever the opponent does. It was a phrase coined by NM Dan Heisman.

I always saw it as they hope the opponent will fall for their trick.
@NinjaSquirreI
@NinjaSquirreI 9 сағат бұрын
@@chriselcombe847 That is a common use of the term by people who either are unfamiliar with NM Heisman's use of the term, or misunderstand it. To the best of my knowledge, Heisman was the first to speak of 'hope chess' and people who heard it but did not learn what he meant, made up different meanings. Why is Heisman's meaning important, important enough to call it the true definition? Because it strikes at the heart of what makes beginners weak: they do not look at how the pieces move. On the other hand, playing for a trap and hoping the opponent doesn't see it, is not something of fundamental importance that deserves to be made into chess jargon.
@chriselcombe847
@chriselcombe847 8 сағат бұрын
@@NinjaSquirreI that's fair enough, but I think both scenarios are equally common and important. Both hoping you can deal with whatever your opponent brings, and hoping that your idea works are things beginners need to address before they improve. You need to know before you do.
