Super tip about holding the ring in a pair of reverse action tweezers, then heating it to bring the ends tightly together! This is going to save me endless frustration! Thanks for posting!

Have just tried this on 4mm round wire and it works a dream! A big thumbs up!

Personally, I always feel weird about charging anyone for anything, but all things have their costs, and there should be no shame in wanting to supply yourself with better things. "The crafts of your hands cannot surpass the beauty your mind can conceive" Thanks for the term "busy idiot". Definitely going to use that. Seen you haven't posted recently... I hope all is well with you and you make some new videos soon!

You can use a punching bag bloon, if you wanted to for your blow pipe air. I seen something interesting on youtube (Faradays clay blowtorch, glass works). This guy uses a bloon between his legs and a make shift cork air valve system, kind of a cool way to do it.

How long do you pickle for? And so glad one can use a slow cooker, the electronic pickle pots are expensive so this helps me out :)

9 years on and still getting new viewers ^_^ The difference in visibility was remarkable. The first join (oxygen+gas) was "yeah, okay" but the second with the blowpipe - you could see the base metal heating, the solder softening and starting to melt before flowing. There was so much more detail available for our eyes. That's a significant improvement in control that I was not expecting. I'm presuming the yellow flare coming off the part was the soap burning off?

This is the best video I've found. I'm 30 and I'm going into my local shop to explore apprenticeship opportunities tomorrow morning. I've wanted to be a jeweler for my whole life and have finally made the decision to chase my dream. You're right. This is an antique trade... to practice this for a living is one of the greatest privileges in my opinion.Thank you for some of your knowledge.

do not refer to it as "laser wire" interested parties will think that you are dealing with something special. it is a plain gold wire with the carats yours specified...

Hi ya yes this can definitely be done u need to play around with the laser settings u may need to up the milliseconds so the laser beam stays on the metal longer for a better weld becauseu are dealing with a higher ct Hope this helps

Hi! How many sizes one down one can do for such a ring (with a center diamond in WG)? I have eu 55 and need 49, do you think it is feasible to do without a distortion?
@markjeweller2 жыл бұрын
It’s really hard to say with out seeing the ring but in theory yes keep an eye on the setting the stone might need to be tightened afterwards What ct is the white gold ?

so far I've been melting alloy in my forge but cant really see what im doing tho and its hard to learn when youre only doing it once every couple months, I think im better off with the torch set, nowadays its down to 100$ not a big fan but...ultimately...I have been wasting so much charcoal and so many moulds and metal, just trying to get it right, so I think this has become a case of "spend money to save money" thanks man good informative video.

Brilliant job, only just discovered your channel, I’ve never seen prominent text like that on the inside of a ring, how would you go about polishing between each letter? Thanks for sharing your skills
@dordiwesterlund25283 жыл бұрын
How to make a signet? Simple, you buy a blank from Cookson, with their ugly looking gold (14K I'm sure). You solder it closed and, voila, you make a signet. Just do not confuse this with goldsmithing!
@markjeweller3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dordi this video wasn’t made with the intention to offend your Goldsmithing skills it was made for people just starting out as u well know to hand make one would take at least 4 hours then I would have to edit the video after this for KZbin my friend people want quick videos I’m not doin an online course because as u well know u have to learn one on one I think the main reason u left this comment was to look like u have far superior knowledge which you may well have. so I looked on your Channel to see what videos you made and u haven’t made any If you want to make one I can put it up on my Channel so it’ll get views (because u don’t have any content on urs) or I can share ur Channel to my followers and ur signet video Im all about learning and sharing it was very difficult to get a good apprenticeship when I went for mine and it’s even harder now and I really believe that the majority of colleges and courses I’m not fit for purpose This Chanel was made for people to dip there toe in the world of jewellery making to see if it’s for them and then find there own way There is a bad practice among craftsman online where they think they can just leave a negative comment on a video or post when in the back of there heads they think making that comment to there followers / customers they will gain there followers/ customer and it just isn’t the case The head line to this video is a hook granted I’ll put my hands up to that one and dordi my mate it is from cooksons I’ve said that in past comments and I always recommend cooksons but there is 1 thing it’s 9ct not 14ct we don’t tend to use 14ct in the uk The reason for 9ct was because it was what the customer could afford not sure if ugly is the right word but it’s your opinion I could re-title this video to how to make a signet ring on a budget but that’s a bit crap ain’t it really To be fair tho you’ve had a dig at my video and and I’ve had a dig at ur comment I don’t no if u r in London but if u r when the pubs praise God open up I would genuinely would like to buy u a beer I’m always up for a jewellery chat
@dordiwesterlund25283 жыл бұрын
@@markjeweller Okay, I see your point. I do not want to offend your skills, if you feel I do, I genuinely apologise. What I want to achieve - fruitlessly, I know - is to keep people away from all these blanks and pre-made settings and all the rest. Once you are able to make these things yourself, you will never look back. It is a freedom that cannot be bought. We - goldsmiths - should also get away from the dictum that time is money because it is absolutely incorrect. Take your time to make something. Make it over and over. Think about design. A lot of people can make utter crap perfectly well. That is not where the challenge lies. Perhaps you think otherwise, but the best advice ever given to me was: make everything yourself. That is what I am doing. My 'repertoire' is rather limited, but within these limitations I can pretty much do whatever I want.

Sir i am from india and working in a jewellery company from 2 years . Here i only got to do to remove casting texture in pieces where it cant be polished. I also set/ repair fallen diamond in casting(wax set diamonds), but i want to become independent jeweler but its nearly imposible to learn whole work here. Jewellery schools are pretty bad here and also i cant afford one because i am getting paid only 18000 ruppes month or only 1 dollor per hour. Is it possible to get an apprenticeship to a expert jeweller outside of my country.
