Hi Warren. A great video and you really expressed your thoughts well. A lot of complexities involved. Some concern what film elements remain and whether the director or cinematographer are still alive/available to oversee a reissue; others involve active filmmakers looking at it as an opportunity to tinker and provide a new edit; and others that involve rights ownership that has resulted in the studio/distributor making changes. Maybe also the “original” that we first saw wasn’t actually that as it was a copy from a copy….When I went to the BFI it was interesting to hear them talk about some of the decisions they have to make to try and preserve original intent when they are doing a 4K restoration as so much more information becomes visible which the casual viewer wouldn’t have seen before eg on Greenaway’s period film The Draughtsman’s Contract 4K scan it revealed a DC10 flying across the sky; on George Pal’s War of the Worlds it revealed lots more wires for the models than you would have originally seen. So some (well intentioned) practical decisions are having to be made on all these 4K issues which may or may not result in changes the audience approve of. As for actual edits, yes I like to know when watching a film if it’s a director cut etc or year of reissue…..Talking of artist’s rights, when I was over I did go and see some art at the Royal Academy and one piece was titled Oak Tree but the piece was a glass half full of water positioned on a high shelf. Beside was text of an interview with the artist. The reviewer argued that it wasn’t an oak tree; the artist defended that it was as he had an oak tree in mind when he created the piece, and it would remain an oak tree until he decided it was not. Ultimately I suppose the art can be one thing, but how you label it or describe it can be something else and only when those two things marry up are we satisfied

Yes the Director/ Producer can do whatever they like its their content and its upto them. The audience can choose to like or not. Why should they bow down to the audience its upto them. As long as both the original and altered versions are available for people to enjoy.

Hello Warren. Fantastic monthly round up as usual. The Ballad of Narayama blew me away. Imagine carrying your parents up a mountain to die. Pigs and Battleships is one I'd recommend from Imamura but again well oop I'm afraid. Wings is amazing. How on earth did they pull off those dogfights in the twenties?

Thanks for watching Roy! Absolutely, I couldn't begin to imagine what that would be like. It was such a harrowing film, with some scenes that I think are now burned into my mind! I've had an eye out for the Pigs and Battleships release for a few years, and hopefully one day I'll be lucky enough to snag one. I'd love to explore more from Imamura. Wings was stunning, and I was exactly the same in thinking, 'How on earth?!' every few minutes it seemed! Astonishing scenes that wouldn't be out of place in modern films.

You watched some great films in July! I watched Day Of The Outlaw last week and agree with your comments. The dance scene was intense to say the least. I was actually disappointed with Dr. No the last time I watched it. The dragon scene you mentioned really irritated me as they could have easily got away without anyone dying. Great The Raid edition you have there. Its an excellent film. The sequel is equally great too. The Station Agent is one of my favourites. It's so underrated and deserves much more recognition. I'm always recommending it to people. I've been desperate for a bluray release for ages.

Thanks so much for watching! My goodness that dance scene. The sober nature of it gave it such an unexpected edge. You wrote a great review on Insta! Ah that's a shame about Dr No. I know exactly what you mean though. If Quarrel had to die, I felt like it should have been a much more meaningful as it did feel a bit unneccessary in that particular scene. I can't say I was a fan of the entire dragon bit at all really, except in showing that Bond wasn't perfect and made mistakes, but I guess the 60s nature of it charmed me somewhat. Ah I'm so glad to hear you also love the Station Agent! I couldn't agree more. It feels like a perfect fit for Criterion, Imprint, Radiance, or even Eureka, and definitely deserves a great boutique release, and with such a great cast, would surely sell well. Here's hoping!

Hello, thanks so much for watching! I'm not the best person to ask unfortunately as my knowledge in this area is limited. From what I can see, the image is significantly and noticeably 'crisper' in comparison to my Curzon bluray. The bluray's grain looks quite fine as it is, and in the scenes I compared, it does still look present on the 4K disc, but it's hard to notice at times, so I don't know if it's just because it was so fine to begin with or if something was done to the image. Hopefully DVDBeaver will review the disc, as I think they are the standouts for discussing image quality and transfers.

I've only discovered Petzold few weeks ago and I've already seen 5 of his movies (this doesn't happen to me very often as I don't watch movies that much). Something about his movies is almost addictive, every time I finish one I feel like I want more. Undine was the first film I watched of him (so I kind of went backwards). Undine completely captured me I still think about it almost everyday, and after 5 of his movies, Undine is still my favorite. I absolutely loved that weird ethereal mystical feeling it had while still being very realistic and modern and almost boring? Undine was certainly "boring" for a supposedly "mythical creature", she still had to go to work, still had to deal with the mundanity of mortals. It was almost like Christoph's love is what gave her back her ethereal essence, it's love that gives the mundane lives magic. I loved Transit and Phoenix as well, I loved the feeling of continuity of Petzold's imagination and using the same actors helps with that. Like we're just exploring his consciousness through different stories but same essence over and over. While I also enjoyed Barbara but I didn't love it as much, for whatever reason, it didn't "touch" me as much. Afire was the last film I watched of Petzold and it was another hit. It felt much more personal and down to earth than all the other ones. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend it. I'll probably take a long break before continuing to his earlier films. I want to return to it with a fresher mind.
@goosesmovies
@goosesmovies Ай бұрын
What a wonderful comment, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I couldn't agree more, Petzold crafts these utterly compelling stories and worlds where you just want to see more, and like yourself I watched them in a very short span of time! Undine I think had a sort of magical realism to it, where the realism was particularly emphasised and as you say, the mundane came through, though with Petzold's great story telling to keep things incredibly engaging. Rogowski and Beer are a particularly potent combination I think! Ah I love that, the idea of exploring an essence in Petzold's films. It's often said that directors make one film, and then make the same over and over again throughout their careers, and I think his films definitely retain a key component which just hooks you and connects on some almost heart level. I was lucky enough to see Afire at the cinema last year and I also loved it. I picked up the Janus Contemporaries release which I can certainly recommend. Also, I watched Yella shortly after making this video, and just in case you want to watch it too, I feel like I would have liked to have known that it's actually a remake of sorts of Carnival of Souls. I wished I'd seen that original before watching Petzold's version of it because I think it would have been a richer experience.

Hi Warren. Another great video, well edited and put together with great thought and care. I love the western genre and Robert Ryan movies but actually haven’t seen Day of the Outlaw, I will rectify that soon. Thanks for highlighting it. Nice edition of Dr No and I enjoyed your comments. Yes, as the first one, it’s more scaled down and gritty. Moore’s For Your Eyes Only was the first Bond I got to see in the cinema and I loved his era but the Connery ones, with From Russia With Love perhaps now being my favourite when I would have chosen Goldfinger when younger. Great edition of The Raid, what bone crunching exhilaration that is. The Station Agent is such a delight. My sister loves Dinklage and had been encouraging me to watch it for ages, I was really pleased when I found the dvd. And I absolutely love Superman and Superman 2. My folks couldn’t afford to take us to the cinema much as kids but I still strongly remember my dad taking me to see Superman 2. Just brilliant and as you say, John Williams score grabs you right from the start.

Thanks so much Neil, I really appreciate the kind words! Ah I hope you enjoy Day of the Outlaw. It was a real surprise to me, though of course coming from the Masters of Cinema collection, I should have known it would be great. I look foward to hearing your thoughts on it! I think my watch through of the Bonds a couple years ago definitely gave me a renewed appreciation for Connery in the role. Moore definitely added a real charm to the role though I think, and you get the feeling that he was probably having a lot more fun than Connery! Ah thanks so much for bringing The Station Agent back to my attention, because it was a wonderful journey to take again. If your sister hasn't seen it, the one I mentioned I think We're Alone Now I can highly recommend, as it's a great Dinklage film. It did used to be on Netflix, though not too sure at the moment. I can't believe I forgot about Zulu, it's a classic that I've never seen, and certainly need to. I picked up Robbery a month or two ago and enjoyed it quite a bit, I love a good heist film, and Baker seems to enjoy playing a cunning thief. A very varied haul. I agree tnat Stanley Baker is a very underrated actor. The Criminal is not his best but some of his other films also directed by Joseph Losey are much better,in particular Accident (Studio Canal) where he is cast opposite Dirk Bogarde ,and Eve (Indicator) where he appears opposite Jeanne Moreau. A Foreign Affair is vintage Wilder,similar to his other Berlin comedy One Two Three,also released by MoC.

Thanks Sam! River was a lot of fun, I think you'll really enjoy it and definitely pick up Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes if you can, both are quite similar, but there is a lot of joy packed into them. My first experience with those Vinegar Syndrome partner label releases, and I'm really impressed. Of course they are the usual thinner American bluray cases, but they are all really nice, and the slipcovers have an interesting texture to them! Oh mate, I feel like I haven't made the most of the Signal One sale so I might go back for more. Some fantastic deals. Glad you've picked up a few! Looking forward to seeing what Radiance titles you picked up too. I haven't re-watched The Raid 2 yet, but I remember it being just as good. I really hope Umbrella release the second one so I can have them both together. Action done to perfection! Have a great weekend too Sam!

Such an inviting range and depth of filmmaking in this haul. Picked a few similar titles myself in the past few months. I hope you get as much out of Long Arm of the Law as I did. Guerrilla film making at its best. The copy of the Taid from Umbrella is even more impressive on your table than the website photos. Enjoy!

Thanks Chris! Very much looking forward to the Long Arm of the Law films. I'd never heard of them before I saw you talking about them, so really glad I can finally check them out. I can hugely recommend Umbrella's edition of The Raid. Expensive but not overly pricey, and it is an absolute behemoth! Looking forward to your next watchlist video to see what you've been picking up and watching!

Looking forward to re-visiting Open Range after what must be close to 20 years since I last saw it, so glad to hear it's one you enjoy as well. Thanks for watching Stuart!

Also steelbook films can get easily scratched and you,ve wasted £40

No as steelbooks are awaste of money. Hell even som holographic film slips with the front cover are still better than steelbooks. Such as Independence day or ID4 Ghost Ship 98 and Mirror horror film. Ordinairy cardboard slips are better/cheaper

Hello, unfortunately it doesn't. All the films are in English, but sadly there are no subtitles in any language on any of the discs.

Thanks for making this video. I'm thinking of getting the collection. Are all the films in the boxset restored or just an average image quality? Cheers! :-)

No problem at all, I hope you found it useful! It's been a while since I watched all these, but I've just gone through the included booklet again and all the films use the 2013 restorations, except Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot which uses a restoration from 2009. As I recall, most of them looked really good to me.

Fantastic round up video of the original 6 ST films Warren; I’m having such a ball with these movies; some are better than others; looking forward to get to the rest; it’s ‘The Undiscovered Journey’ I get to next 😀👍

Hi Warren. I really want to check out The Beast now. It looks fascinating. George Mackay is great. Captain Fantastic is also very good. I do like my Noir and don't own any of those Colombia sets. I'll have to rectify that in the next sale.

Hey Roy, I can highly reccommend The Beast. A really mind bending tale that keeps you off balance throughout. I definitely need to check out Captain Fantastic. It's been on my mind recently with Viggo Mortensen releasing a new film, and I'm curious to see more from George Mackay now too. Ah I think a few of the boxsets are sold out now unfortunately, but Indicator has put out standard editions of the individual films so you can just get the best ones without the duds, as there are few in them that are a bit naff.

Always enjoy these vids, great recommendations for me. Definitely going to hunt down Our Little Sister for more Kore-Eda just picked up his family values release on Arrow. The Beast sound interesting Seydoux is definitely one of the best actors of this generation so versatile. MacKay is also have enjoyed in everything ive seen him in tho only 1917 & Captain Fantastic. Look forward to the next vid, have a good weekend mate 👍🏻

Thanks so much Al! The more I see from Kore-eda the more I'm amazed by his films. He's really something special. Nice get on the family values set! I've only got one so far from that trio, so definitely need to get hold of the other two. (I'm gutted that I let that lovely BFI boxset slip through my fingers.) I can highly recommend The Beast. Very strange and disorienting, but riveting stuff. Ah I still need to see Captain Fantastic. With Viggo Mortensen putting out a new film, it reminded of it and I definitely need to check it out. Hope you have a good weekend too!
