oh dear - the american power grid im not sure if 1 Test print is enough statistical evidence for the error. but you can try to fore such errors with your oil radiator making continuous on/off cycles im not sure if the cheapass ups is able to so fast balance the line when its in standby. if you have an oil furnace - the burner maybe uses 100 watts, that shouldnt make such high spikes normally a good psu (in the printer) needs to have enough reserves for small grid outages I would recommed a separate fused socket each only for 1 printer.
@sethcraftshop

turns out the issues was my own heater messing with the power. However after the big storm that knocked out the power for 18 days the grid is not reliable. I had no less than 5 prints mess up on the system before the UPS. I only showed the 1 print in the video. The oil heater turns on at 700w. The Bambu A1 can continue on a power supply switch time of 15ms from my testing.

You experienced what is called a "brownout" or "power sag" when your high current sucking heater kicked on. It only took me one time of having a $100+ print fail during a storm power outage for me to hook my Ender 6 (350 watts or thereabouts) to a UPS. When the power went out, it then gave me enough time to attach an EGO PAD5000 400 watt 56v battery powered inverter which even gave me more time to setup, start and run power extension cord from my gasoline inverter generator to the 3D printer in the basement...probably close to 75 feet of extension cord...to keep it powered and printing. Never skipped a beat!!! Tragedy averted!!! Just remember "2 is One, One is NONE!!!" when your UPS conks out during a serious outage, you're gonna be hurtin'!!! Just to add insult to injury, your UPS contains an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) Lead-Acid Battery which will give you nowhere near the runtime of a Lithium (LiFePO4) Solar Generator type setup. So just get an EcoFlow to put right before the UPS. Lithium also has more robust charge/discharge cycles unlike lead acid where when you cycle them hard, they are extremely prone to early failure. Believe me. I have a UPS hooked up to just about every piece of data or media equipment in my house and the UPS's that fail the hardest are usually the ones that are connected to the higher current draw items such as computers and not the TV's.

Sounds like you had a big job on that printer! Learned that lesson really fast. It only took me a weeks or so to learn that I needed a ups. Once my oil heater is removed from the room I have a 15kwh whole house system that will run the printers off grid. That is a much better 2 is 1 situation. I tried to use a Zendure Super Base V but sadly it turns off automatically at 48 hours. Was not a good solution to battery backup.
@sobolanul96

These are shit. We have lower spec models at work. Sometimes batteries last more than the ups, I have a stack of 5 broken units. Some do not charge the batteries, some are just dead. I bought the model you have but 1000VA. A PIECE OF SHIT. It can not hold an ender 3 s1 pro which has MAX 350w power draw. It measured around 250w power draw when it started beeping and froze to error 03. I will return it. It is clearly faulty. Also be careful with the software if you install it, especially with linux and klipper. The software uses serial USB, the same as many 3d printers. After a couple of ups failures, the software on the laptop somehow took the address of the printer and fucked everything up. It took two days to find the issue. I suspected a corrupt firmware, or a damaged printer board. Nope, that shitty powerpanel personal management software messed everything up.

i have one of the 1350va units i bought 10 years ago, i've replaced the batteries once. it has survived running my desktop with 850w supply through very cold winters living in a trailer to now living in an actual house. i also have 3 of the 1500va units at work, 2 run our Prusa XL 5 tool printers (750w draw on preheat) and the 3rd runs another powerful desktop with 850w supply. 3-4 years on those units so far. i've another APC rack mount UPS that is now giving me inverter errors and randomly decides to not recognize the battery. i'm replacing it with the equivalent Cyberpower unit.

@ I think it is more of a quality control issue. We also have some very old cyber power units that are reliable. But the new ones seem to depend on your luck. Before this one I had an old Mustek 800VA ups that kept the printer online without an issue, reporting only 70% load while heating the bed and nozzle from 0 to working temp.

Even more interesting, as a former copy machine technician, I arrived at the conclusion that all copy machines should have an implementation of a UPS for the "brain"/computing system of the machine as many times during a "power event"--lightning storm/wind storm, the power would either bounce or sag causing the data to be corrupted on the hard drive and requiring a hard drive replacement or a drive re-format to make the machine functional again. I most definitely had "job security"!!! 😂

the alternative is, that you live in the UCTE area - luckily here in Europe we have the most stable synchronous Powergrid in the world (by far) powered outages are a very rare exception and fluctuating frequency or voltage is virtually impossible so investing in a USV/UPS is only needed for critical systems like servers a 3d printer failing due to a power grid issue is possible, but the cost for the UPS is way more than a print failure every 5 to 10 years due to power loss
@LerrySanders
@LerrySanders 5 күн бұрын
Its about conditioning the power in this case, not really power outages. Kinda like having a mini power station in your house to make super clean and consistent power.
@suit1337
@suit1337 5 күн бұрын
@@LerrySanders Tell me you understand nothing about power grids without telling me ;) No offense, but this is not correct. "Kinda like having a mini power station in your house" - usual base load powerplants in the USA have an allowed frequency tolerance of 5 % (which is totally OK, because on average the grid takes care about frequency fluctuations) - so "a mini power station in your house" would be the worst to have clean power ;) Power outages are an issue indeed, because every power outage in a segment of the synchronous grid raises (or lowers) the frequency of the rest of the grid - this is a major challenge for the grid operators. To bring this in perspective: the last major event where the european grid went over the frequecy treshold was 2021 where an big substation in Croatia "exploded", this raised the net frequency to about 1,2 % over the nominal value - the issue was resolved in 1 hour. So no continental power outage, but a "small" substation in a country in one corner of the continent was enough to mess up the grid. This deviation was roughly to 50,6 Hz, so 500 mHz over the treshold of the nominal frequency. The product you use has a frequency error of ± 1% (at 60 Hz) according to the data sheet. So within the specs of the product it would be totally OK to have 600 mHz overfrequency. The mean frequency error of the european grid is ± 0,1 % (at 50 Hz). Long story short: your "super clean and consistent power" is 12 times less stable than an entire power grid that serves roughly 400 million customers in 24 countries. If it works for you or it is neccesary in the US, this is fine - but for european users this is in most cases just a waste of money.

This area used to be nice and clean. After the Big Storm and power was knocked out for 18 days we have issues all the time. Power Poles are still laying half in the road and that was 5 months ago. In this case my issues is internal power surging. That heater pulls 700w and causes the printer to skip a line.

those oil heaters are energy hogs fyi 600w-1200w, it's on more than you think. Racks up a bill fast. It would be more efficient to close in the shelf, its self heated and can have a moisture controlled space with desiccant since the reels are exposed.
@sethcraftshop
@sethcraftshop 4 күн бұрын
This one pulls 700w when it kicks on. Most of the year its not an issue here. For example today it was 68 degrees outside. two weeks ago it was 4 degrees out. A fully enclosed shelf would be nice for the heat. moisture but probably not going to happen. Next up I am going to take the heater to a new circuit and the printers will be off grid.

cool video. I'm wondering if you can do the test with 1/2 the units on direct power and the other on UPS power as a High power device cycles? Example, put 2 on raw power and the other on UPS, set heater at certain times ( or log ON /OFF cycles ), and let it ride. Also is the heat produced in the same room as the printers? Could the vast temp changes cause this side affect? Perhaps dump the heat outside of room or find a way to maintain even temps during the power tests.
@sethcraftshop
@sethcraftshop 4 күн бұрын
The building has 3 heaters running in it. The oil heater is on the same circuit as the printers. That is one thing that needs to change. I have not tested printers on and off the UPS together but I did test the 3 printers together without the UPS and they all had skips at the same layer. That tells me it was a power issue.

I get what you’re saying. I’m torn between the 12 k and the 24. Darn shame they don’t have an 18k. I’m trying to convince Southern California Edison to fund one of these. That will make it a MUCH easier decision. They are already going to replace our OLD electric water heater with a Heat Pump Model and replace our 1986 Garage Refrigerator with a new one. Our Propane heater took a dump and we’ve heated all winter with a wood stove we hadn’t used in 20 years. A 12k unit could be supplemented with the wood stove. But AC is AC. It gets DAMN hot here in the Southern Sierra foothills. Our home is pretty old and about nearly 800 sf of heated and cooled space. Cheers.

@Nova-m8d
@Nova-m8d 13 күн бұрын
The reason they recommend the strong ties on the outside of the wall is because wood wall sheathing will be on the outside which will cover the strong tie plate and nails. Ring shank framing nails should also be used. You could just as easily place the strong tie inside and then add a 2x4 on covering all the plates the entire length of the wall to help lock the ties down. The extra 2x4 on the inside of the double top plate will also give you two extra places to toenail each end of the roof truss.
