Loved them since I can remember, my uncle who taught me to play the guitar was a roadie for them when they first started and now semi retired still helps out occasionally but lives in Dublin.

Only musicians will understand why edge is up there along with the other greats. For non musicians, well yeh, they will never understand art. Its amazing how he can make a beautiful guitar piece with just a few notes.

Bono was such an unconventional song writer. Very rarely does he use a proper bridge or chorus..but it works. Dylan once said that a true song had to have a chorus but Bono proved him wrong.

I am now 54 years old. And I have been consciously listening to music since I was 10 years old. I developed my taste in music when I was about 14. Since then, I have loved pop music on the one hand and classical music on the other, especially baroque music. (Techno trance too, but that's another story...) When I heard ‘With Or Without You’ by U2 for the first time in 1987, it was an awakening experience for me: Edge's ‘Infinite Guitar’ in this song was a sound of angels from heaven for me. Since then, I think that ‘With Or Without You’ is the best pop song in music history. And if I were forced to take one song with me on the much-cited desert island, it would be ‘With Or Without You’. Thank you U2 for this brilliant song.

Boner is a true legend. Bowie and Plant are amateurs next to this guy. The vocal range is incredible, and Boners guitar, it's truly insignificant. A legend.

I've seen some technical playing in my time, but that is on a whole different level. That puts Yngwie to shame. The hat isn't g@y, either.
I don’t skip any songs on Joshua tree that’s pretty rare!!!

The thing is that he hates heavy metal. He said once that he wept watching Spinal Tap because he hated what music became because bands like that one (even though that movie was a joke). The thing was that during the eighties, a guitar solo was like a common place, you could find it even in not metal songs, but not because the song needed that solo, it was just because you thought that doing so you would have a smash hit. That’s what he is saying. Most of those pseudo-metal songs are now out of fashion, they are kitsch.

Don’t know how else to say it: It felt like the Holy Spirit was working through U2’s music in those early years up through Joshua Tree in a powerful way. I don’t know exactly what changed, but though the music was still great, the themes got darker and the sense of the Spirit felt diminished. But those early years through ‘87 were magical.

Damn I wish they would get Larry back and get back out to the big Arenas instead of the stupid stadium shows outdoors. We need to see a real indoor arena show from these guys in these coming 6 months. It's time to get out of that sphere Las Vegas money making gig they did, and get back to your roots of the late eighties! Into the 90s when they were doing Arenas with the quality sound systems

Sometimes the simplistic touches the heart so much easier than the bombastic. Besides, those that hate on Edge have never created anything on his level. Anyone can study what is written, but the smart and truly talented ones write their on books.

People rarely mention how big a part syncopation plays in his signature sound. The thing that makes this part so effective is that it’s played on the off-beats - the “ands”, as the most important notes in his parts often are.

The Edge uses his specially designed "Infinite guitar" on this tune as mentioned on the liner notes on the Album Joshua Tree...it was designed by a Canadian I think but has special circuitry that creates that ..sustainer sound that starts very close to the beginning...to my knowledge it's not a standard "sustainer" sound as special systainer pickups and circuits were fitted in allot of guitars since the 80s and used on tunes like Hysteria by Def Leppard in 1987 ...the Infinite guitar creates a sound more like a repeating feedback sound that's more intense than a standard sustainer which was used by allot of Thrash Metal guitarists back then and others....The Edge also uses this guitar for the live version of "The Unforgettable Fire" since at least live in 1987...
