A video without having Big Sky listed loses credibility. Lone Peak is for experts.

Brighton may be last on this list, but it’s the best resort I’ve ever been to! I am but a humble Midwest skier and couldn’t handle Snowbird (was also only 12 at the time), but I was able to progress to blue runs at Brighton (essentially black diamond in the Midwest)

At my local midwest resort (owned by Vail), a single-day pass plus lesson and rentals is ~$200. That's quite a chunk, and is more than the average employee there makes in a day. It's more than a teacher here makes in a day. And even factoring in transportation and lodging, it's more than it would cost to go ski at a locally-owned resort in SW Colorado. And as a beginner, I could go elsewhere and get a surface-only pass for about half that. Not that skiing was ever a big deal here, but not a fan of our corporate overlords. Golf is way cheaper to get into than skiing. In Colorado, the ski-touring, skin-up, ski-down approach seems like the way to go.

I'm a ten year Deer Valley season pass holder who sold out in Park City and got a weekday pass at Willamette Pass, close to a family property outside of Eugene... Park City was awesome for decades, but its getting brutal these days and it was time to check out smaller local areas... fingers crossed for this season!!

Skiing… the sport that has been ruined by the insane cost to participate. Skied Vail once years ago… had to pay to park my car….. that was the first and last time for me at Vail.

All the mountains out in Banff have amazing views, 360 degrees. Funny moment at Mt. Norquay when my friend said something about the view being great and I agreed; then realized we were looking in completely opposite directions

Look, as an american who grew up skiing in Europe, and only skied in the US as an adult, it still baffles me that people would qualify marked and managed runs as "off-piste." That being said - many ski areas in Europe, especially the higher resorts do in fact avalanche control most of the dangerous areas IF they are easily accessible from the pistes. Usually done with electronic explosives, and you can usually hear/see them do it after a heavy snowfall and you get to the lift early.

Unless you know to stay on the interior of the NW to ski, you’re stuck with trying to ski in PNW cement. It’s horrible. Skiing true powder is much better!

Not true. There are marked off-piste runs in Europe. Still, of course, have propper training and gear and buddies

Palisades deserves at least 5th place if you are going to put Heavenly at 6th and Homewood at 3rd. Very beautiful mountains with diverse terrain and stunning views. Also, it provides ANOTHER viewpoint of Lake Tahoe.

it’s already crowded here, we don’t need a resort. Plus the snow isn’t that great. along with the fact that there is no public transportation. For me I’m waiting for a blue sky day middle of the week!

thanks for not mentioning White Pass (oops..). It will never be a destination resort, given there is little to no private land available for resort development. And, thankfully, it is not readily accessible to the Seattle Metro area as the mountain pass that would otherwise facilitate more or less direct travel to WP is closed in the winter months. White Pass for over 20 years attempted to expand, which would nearly double the skiable terrain but was fought at every turn by a well-connected private group, with the backing of the Sierra Club. The Forest Service had signed off on the plans early on, but it took some very slow, deliberate planning on the part of WP involving cleverly designed lawsuits to get it completed. WP filed suit against the objectors with a lawsuit that if, granted would undo years of successful Sierra Club efforts to guarantee wilderness areas. When the Sierra Club read the intended lawsuit, they withdrew their support from the private group and the expansion was granted. There is far less "Cascade concrete" (the affectionate term for very wet snow) at WP as the elevation is higher than Snoqualmie and farther outside the line of fire for some of the wet snowfall that hits Stevens, et, al. The snow at WP reminds me of that I learned on at Mt Crested Butte in Colorado. The only drawback I see at WP is the infamous "flat light" one frequently encounters there. And, since I am now a "super senior", I can ski the deck or the bar if I do not like the conditions and not lose much, if any, money.

My dad taught skiing and worked ski patrol in Portillo back in the 1960’s. It really hasn’t changed much since then! He made the pilgrimage down there on multiple occasions until a massive avalanche took out the housing where he slept, killing “several” of his friends. The evening before the storm hit, he inexplicably took the train down to Santiago. He said that he was compelled to take the last train off the Mtn, that he knew he couldn’t stay there, and had tried to convince several of his friends to go with him. He returned to the base area after the railroad reopened to help with the rescue, then flew back north with the bodies of his friends. He returned one more time to support the 1966 World Cup race. He was the ski patroller who evacuated Billy Kidd after he broke his leg during the race. My brothers and I followed in his footsteps back in the 1990’s, but as alpine ski racing coaches in New Zealand at Mount Hutt. …Roy Schaefer, my dad, started working at a local rope tow when he was only 7, cleaning up after guests, went on to manage multiple resorts, owner of Berkshire East which he bought from the bank for a dollar in 1976. At 84, dad’s spent his entire life working at or running ski areas…pretty cool. Skiing is amazing!
