Nothing like that clarinet intro song to stir up lovely old memories of watching TOH with Bob Vila and Norm way back when. Despite always working on weekend home projects, I'd always be right there when it came on as my wife was cooking dinner in the kitchen and the kids were laying on the family room carpet playing a board game. It still speaks to me of my family being together despite my wife and I sadly getting divorced in 2005, 16 years ago now. At least I have this as it will always make me wish that we had stayed together.

I always enjoyed watching this old house with Norm and Tom. Bob Villa always thought his shit didn't stink. He always thought he knew more than the master carpenters and other tradesman in the show. Recently Roger Cook passed away from this old house. Roger Cook was a wealth of knowledge in the lawn and garden world. Rip Roger Cook.

This is wonderful -- thank you for this tour of such an important house! An amazing thing is how comfortable it feels to anyone living who came from the 20th c...and as I look around my house, I see so much of the influence plus the impulse to decorate fighting it very hard in molding and cabinetry doodads. The textiles, btw, were likely at least partly the work of Anni Albers, Josef Alber's wife. The Bauhaus masters (including J Albers), visionary as they were, still discriminated enormously against women, who were relegated to textiles. She's an extremely interesting figure, and you can still see her work at MoMA and the Whitney.

I auditioned for TOH in 1991, but I didn't make the cut because I failed to run my fingers across 2 things I was talking about. I was so close, but if you wanna make it in the big leagues, you just gotta touch everything.

I think The actual New Yankee Workshop should be in the Smithsonian museum right beside an exhibit on This Old House and how they contributed so much to woodworking and the DIY home renovation industry. I can’t help but wonder would we have Home Depot or Lowe’s and other big box home improvement stores if This Old House and the spin off shows. Norm Abram’s is Americas master carpenter.

Dear friends, it’s been a long time since I watched tv, had cable etc…. About 15 years without a tv. Recently I had major surgery and had to recover close to the hospital for very close monitoring. The air bnb had big tv and I watched this old house for hours and hours. Once back home, I pulled up toh on KZbin because I missed watching it so much as I’m still recovering. I discovered to my great sadness Roger had left us….i pray for your family sir and have my greatest respect!

The very early episodes are the best! With Bob. Basic carpentry, and how to do it yourself. He will show you how to use a plumb bob. And tell you to use 8 penny nails for toenailing so as not to split the wood. How to install a door so it's straight, and closes as it should. How to frame for a window opening, the header, jack studs, etc. This was the first place I heard of making a header by taking two 2 by 6's and sandwiching a piece of 1/2 inch plywood between them to get you the 3.5 inches of thickness.
