The design and craftsmanship from 1987 would still be desirable in 2020 and beyond. You can say what you want about Bob Vila but that craftsman on that show were equivalent to an Olympic Dream Team in so many ways. Everyone of them is a legend in home building, remodeling, finish carpentry, design, mechanical, decorating and finish landscaping. They made craftsman a wonderful career choice and inspirational to many DIY’rs such as myself and other family members who were glued to each and every episode. So much so when working we spoke with a Boston accent to sound like Norm and Tom. 🤣🤣🤣

@pyrotechnic5254 That’s an odd comment as we live in a free country. If you don’t like the politics, taxes, jobs, crime, social issues, or anything else you pack your bags and move. If there is someone holding you back or down you’re not a victim but a volunteer.

What's interesting to me is how he sounds. He is speaking like young contractor's do to him today. Got a little of that hero worship with a dash of nerousness. Not wanting to say the wrong thing he talks so little compared to today when he goes on about the different techniques he has learned since this was recorded. Really shows how he was just like the workers he showcases today. Great clip.

Feels like yesterday, I graduated High School back in 87 and started college that fall. My dad is 79, retired and owned his own house painting business which I took over, I realized that I enjoy working with my hands more than I did sitting in an office and get more satisfaction at the end of the day. Always enjoy watching TOH and still watch to this day.

Tom Silva looks so great today as he did in his first appearance. He is so talented, and still so handsome today! I love watching This Old House because of him. My husband is 65 and looked similar to Tom in the 80's with his mustache and dark hair. My husband is also very talented with woodworking and tools. I love that Tom had a hammer in his hand at age 3 or 4. We have a new grandson and I hope he will carry on the tradition of working with tools like my husband and son! @Roy Hill .... actually, if you go back to the beginning it was Norm who did some work at the home of a PBS executive and the guy took note of how much skill was involved, plus the VERY small scrap pile. A home improvement show was on their list for the following season and Norm was hired. It's unclear if the show was already in production or if Bob was already cast as the lead roll as they were both in the first season. More on this WIKI page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Abram

Indeed. Today everybody seems to want a white kitchen, similar to the trendy late 80's. At least this time the cabinets are wood and not formica. This kitchen had a beautiful and intricate high ceiling which opened it up very nicely and helped it age well, I also liked that even back then now 35 years ago, they painted the fireplace area a different color to set it off from the dark wood 👍🏽

...I LOVE watching the 'old' episodes of TOH and ATOH....I often fall asleep with this playing in the background...watching these guys reminds me of my dad who could do almost ANYTHING...when I was about 6 or 7, I watched him install knotty pine wainscoting in our dining room, and tile the kitchen floor after ripping up the old linoleum...a few years later he replaced the hot sir heating system with hot water bsseboard heating in out 2 story house in Fort Lee, NJ...all by himself, wee three boys were too young to provide adequate assistance...ca. 1959 he added a dormer (for our maternal grandmother who spent 4 or 5 months with us every year) by raising the roof (assisted by his business partner, Jack)...I watched him cut through the roof and build the frames, raise the roof and get it all enclosed in one day...TOH was his favorite series before he passed away from cancer in 1984...I remember watching it with him here in Florida....

I haven't watched this show in quite a few years and oh boy! His innovation was beyond any I have ever seen. He even has the answer to building an outdoor window Box for plants in the cold rather than having to transport them back-and-forth.

I ripped out a beautiful custom made, built and stained on site solid wood cabinets last year at a customer's house just because it was out of style. Old cabinets were built so well it was hard to demolish. It was built on site without using fillers. Just made to fit the wall perfectly. Then another contractor installed a cheap garbage plywood cabinets and the installer was inexperienced. LOL. Owners were so mad when they saw the result.. But not my problem since they didn't hire us to install.

I can totally see one of those obnoxious HDTV couples walking in, considering buying the place. She's blonde and named Alexis, and she can't possibly live with that horrible dated kitchen, because she wants to entertain ALL of her friends, even thought in reality her cooking skills don't extend beyond Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, and is insulted that the real estate agent would waste their time by showing them such an obvious trash heap of a house. Meanwhile the guy, Justin (little does Alexis know that he's cheating on her and they'll be divorced in 6 months) is off camera in the corner rolling his eyes, but for the sake of the show, he pipes up in slightly emasculated fashion that he can easily rip out the awful cabinets and install new ones for her, even though he's unable to discern the difference between a screwdriver and a crescent wrench.

That kitchen prob cost a small fortune. BY 1992 it was out of style, ready for the pickled wood look.
