I wish I got into construction when I was younger. Too late to change profession now. Instead, I'll live vicariously through TOH.

Do you have the video or familiar with the video when they did a fire rating testing to a big wood mantle on the fireplace...It was a big stone fireplace with a big old wood mantle I’ve been trying to find that video everywhere

Funny, that old old beam is "under sized" and not up to code anymore but how old is that house? And its still standing? Lol Not talking bad about Tommy, Its just funny how things have "progressed" in building.

Mike Znel dude me and my son just got finished building house and the new codes are ridiculous! Beyond all the crazy building codes the fire suppression is NUTS! 7 smoke and O2 monitors two heat monitors in the garage plus the garage has too be wrapped in 5/8 fire retardant sheet rock PLUS a 400 gallon tank of water with pump, electric monitoring, an electric fire alarm bell mounted on the outside of the house AND sprinkler heads throughout the house that stick out of the ceiling! This is in rural NH!!!!

@@johnenright4969 Terrible. I live kn western NY, communist state and I have to abide by the rule of ny and its fearless leader coumo... Its ridiculous what you have to do and the inspections and you have to pay all their buddies to do stuff you don't need. Its disgusting... And I live in a rural area!!!

Those houses were built with old growth lumber. That 6x6 was probably cut from a tree hundreds of years old, super strong and durable.

Even today Vila still seems lost when he is on a construction project .... nothing worst then listening to a host that is out of his comfort zone.

Actually Bob had significant construction experience and ran RJ Vila Renovations and won awards long before TOH. They approached him as a result to be the trendsetter to develop the TOH host genre which he expertly did and which all other hosts have emulated ever since. He also did it for $200/episode in the beginning which they later raised to $800/episode near the end of his 10-year run! Then they gave him an ultimatum because he was also representing Rickell Home Centers on the side who was a direct competitor to TOH's main underwriter Home Depot. So he parted ways, developed his own show Bob Vila Home Again, began representing Craftsman tools, and wrote many books. His net worth today is 70M.

Bob was the best. He made the life of the director easy. The show was much more unified because of him. Now it’s four different hosts and no unity.
