Let me make this simple, you will kill or severy injure yourself working on hot chassis radio without an isolation transformer. The phono input will work if you happen to have an old crystal cartrage phonograph, will not really work with a modern magnetic head, the output is too low, 😂 good luck

You spent 20~25$ to much, these usually go for 5 to 10 at hamfests or radio club auctions/meetings. I suggest you join your local club lots of help and good source of stuff to repair😂 and spare partsband saftey advice. by the way all AM and FM radios are superhytrodyne tube or otherwise. As well electrolytic caps thoug the may be covered in paper are not paper caps, the paper caps are the coupling caps between stages. You are also playing a very dangeous game playing with a hot chassis radio that is not hooked up to an isolation transformer.

I do not know if you have a schematic for your set. Nostalgia Air is one site to find them , and download .If you do not find yours there, you can go to radio museum, and look for it there. There should also be your dial string information. Also, please completely remove that cap, that will allow you to place individual caps in there Looking forward to the rest of this.

I have this overseas Hunter original from this era. The motor hums but doesn’t turn. Upon partial disassembly the rotor is very difficult to turn by hand. I was planning to clean the bearings and shaft as advised. If it is in fact seized is the fan trash? This is the polished brass model so I would prefer to repair if possible.
@Thanson199415
@Thanson199415 15 күн бұрын
@@joecoty3981 ooooffffff!! I wouldn't say it's trash, it depends on the severity of how seized the motor is and the condition of the bearing. It sounds like it hasn't had any maintenance on the oil if any at all and the motor is locked up. If you manage to get the motor free and the main bearing lubricated, you may have bearing noise afterwards. But if I were you, I wouldn't give up on it plus it's a beautiful polished brass

one thing to watch out for in valves/tubes is 'grid emission', in valves with many hours use, mostly in power output valves but 'can' affect signal types, after a few minutes run the first grid can tend to go positive or 'less negative' resulting in excessive anode current, causing eventual damage to other compinents this doesnt always show up with any effects on the audio except when it gets severe...this 'issue' is not commonly known of or mentioned in servicing books 'back in the day', some class it as 'insulation leakage', which can also occur, but grid emission is where the electron emission coating slowly 'boils off' and deposits on the grid, so making it a very weak cathode, so causing some current flow to anode/screen, the small 'all glass' valves seem to be more affected than the larger types, likely due to closer electrode spacing ..... so its always a good idea to measure these grid voltages after a few minutes run to see if any may be afflicted, if the earlier stages afflicted, it may result in gain/volume dropping off

If suspect a B+ HT supply filter cap can measure it in situ,. With tubes it doesn't need "low esr", just have the uF. Can patch in a trial cap across the old one with foot long wires. Most likely more than half the electrolytics are fine for another 60 years. Incandescent light bulb great for discharging any HT.

Couple things to look for, the glue that holds the inductors can become resistive with age and shift the oscillator or cause low injection. That sealed tuning capacitor can get internal oxidation and cause erratic tuning. I'll be surprised if it's a semiconductor causing this. Paid for school working at an electronic repair shop with Navy B school instructors who owned the place years ago. Still do some vintage Corvette radios now and then. Fun stuff. Try a hair dryer over selected areas, aged capacitors in the RF, oscillator stages may wake up. Try a tap test with a non-metallic tool and see if anything shows up.

Well your oscillator and mixer work else you would not be able to dial in any stations. For the other things. Measure voltages and find out why they differ. Watch out for the AGC which could be the reason that IF stages are under biased which may be the case as you have no sensitivity. Avoid changing transistors unless they are defective which you can easily find out with a multimeter. Changing transistors in the IF might require realignment. If you have an electronic engineering degree this should be easy

@@LutzSchafer yeahhhh it has been years since I done this stuff but I've been wanting to get back into it and now is the perfect time since me and my wife bought our first house just recently. The 3904 is ok-ish for AM. At 10.7 MHz IF they are not quite there, and at 100MHz they need to be pushed with at least 5 to 10mA current to obtain some kind of amplification. In short: they are general purpose, but with some reserve. If you happen to decide to substitute the FM RF and Osc transistors, a proper substitute that's easy to buy and I've tested and used many times with success is the MPSH10 or its current reference KSP10. If you may wish to keep the original transistors, you will need to increase the current flow by reducing the base bias resistor in the mixer transistor. I have not seen the schematic but cheap radios use just one with high value. In a radio I repaired with the same symptom as yours, the base resistor was 680k, and reduced to (I think it was) 330k started to work again. Old and early silicon transistors, specially those you have with the epoxy dome style package, tend to go bad with lower gain, and since manufacturers tried to make the radio draw the least current possible to have better battery life, they biased transistors a bit too starved to give optimal performance.
@Thanson199415
@Thanson199415 4 ай бұрын
@@joseppuig925 I thank you so much, this comment makes so much sense because when I fed the radio 9 volts, it came to life. So maybe I should reduce the base resistor. I don't mind if it draws more battery life.

I thought I knew about most cassette tapes, having been a recording enthusiast since the early sixties. I still have two cassette recorders, a Nakamichi Dragon and a Nakamichi 582, but I only use the Dragon these days. Anyway, I have never heard of a Type 0 cassette tape. Honestly the Type 0 doesn’t technically exist, but there are cassettes which are manufactured poorly and the formulation process of the magnetic tape produces lack luster audio reproduction to the point where the cassettes get “called” a Type 0. For example, I actually have a Maxell Type 4 metal cassette that is metaphorically called a Type 0. Usually what you record onto Type 4 cassettes practically get mirrored right back towards you because of there excellent sound quality but because unfortunately this Maxell cassette that I own was stored in a very humid environment, the tape itself had a small amount of white mold but even that was all it took and the audio drops out and is very choppy on the high frequencies.

We lived in the States when I was a kid and my fan obsession started then. I have a huge collection of desk fans including imported Laskos, Galaxy, Sears, Lakewoods, etc. My Original was actually destined for sale in Spain (a 240v model) and while it isn’t as powerful as an American fan, it’s well built - body wise anyway. The blades that came with it are MDF but I managed to get a set of five genuine Walnut blades from Florida on eBay so they’re decent at least.
