Hi, I am an mba student from India i would like to do a phd in finance after completing my mba. But i did my undergraduates in mechanical engineering. Will i be able to get into finance phd ?
@GisliNairs10 күн бұрын
Mostly yes. You have a post graduate in management, so it's related to finance... also you may get diversity points (but it depends on that specific college) diversity points means... if you have a diverse educational background... like you took mechanical engineering, then masters in management... you have diverse academic experience. Also if you are a MBA student in top universities of your country (India) like IIM... then you have a boost. But it doesn't influence so much too.

Hello, I would appreciate it if you could respond. This year, I will be starting the electrical and electronics engineering undergraduate program at a university ranked 1400th in the QS World Rankings. If I maintain a GPA of 4 and follow your suggestions, and plan my 4 years accordingly, can I get accepted to Stanford? In other words, would the obscurity of my university have a negative impact? I am studying in Turkey.

An internship I did during my junior year of undergrad led me to get a job at my current company even after a gap of multiple years of grad school. Without that internship, I think my name would've gotten lost in the pile of applications. Despite the fact that I actually got turned down by the team I originally interned for, thanks to the fact that I forged good connections there, they referred me to another team at that company that I was better suited for which took me in. The two biggest things that got me my current job are: 1) Doing an internship there, and 2) Doing grad school research which almost exactly aligned with the work they did. For anyone who can't land an internship at their dream job, I highly encourage them to pursue research in an area that aligns with the specific job you want. Doing so allowed me to specialize my skills in a certain niche and made me an especially attractive candidate.

For people who wants to go to industry - and do not want to work with research - is it better doing a master than a PhD?
@bonchonjonjon3 ай бұрын
I think generally yes. PhD is basically a five (or more) year research program. If you have no interest in research in the future, a masters might be more suitable for most non-research industry positions.
@julianasbraz3 ай бұрын
@@bonchonjonjon thanks for answering. I’m thinking to apply this year and was in doubt about this difference. At least, here in Brazil, master and PhD don’t have any value to the industry 🥲. I didn’t know how it was in USA.

@@bonchonjonjon Do you think is it possible to have tuition waiver in Computer Science Master in Stanford? I know most PhD do not pay anything, but for master it isn’t so clear.

Most masters students pay for tuition by default. There might be scholarships, or TA positions available to help them pay as well but the student would have to apply for them.

Hi Jon, it was really helpful. I’ve received two admits: Purdue (ChemE) and NTU Singapore (Materials). I intend to do research in perovskites, for which NTU is the best. Purdue ChemE dept is not really famous for this research and the profs I want to work are also not sure of taking students. However, many of ‘em are suggesting against going to Singapore given the low job opportunities. What to do?
@tresellers34533 ай бұрын
Hi Rajeev, I went to Purdue for my undergrad in Electrical Engineering, and a lot of the research on semiconductors is actually spearheaded by the EE department. I would reach out to Professor Muhammad Alam in the ECE department. When I took a class with him and asked him about his research he hinted about working on perovskites. Also please reach out to Professor Mark Lundstrom. He is extremely approachable and very interested in helping students in my experience. He was also the head of semiconductor research at Purdue and may be the head of engineering as a whole at this time. Purdue engineering has its challenges as a school overall, but the semiconductor department is exceptional. If that is what you are interested in you have definitely found the right school. Good luck Rajeev! And if you don't already know this Mark Lundstrom founded NanoHub which provides open source education and resources on semiconductor free online (KZbin and on their webpage) ! I would highly recommend you use them to aid in your studies wherever you go, and don't forget to give back to the community when you can. Hopefully you find this advice helpful

@@tresellers3453 Thank you for your helpful pointers. Just a query, as I’ve received an admit from ChemE dept, how feasible/likely is it that the prof from other dept (in this case, ECE) will accept me as his/her student?
@bonchonjonjon3 ай бұрын
Wow glad to see that people are helping each other out. To answer your later question first, professors often allow students from departments outside of their own to work in their lab. I've been in medical imaging labs that included EE, CS, mechE, and BioE students. It's just a matter to reaching out to the professor to see if things are a good match. Regarding the decision between Purdue and NTU, I'm not familiar with the fields enough to give too much advice. That being said, I don't know if going to NTU would necessarily mean low job opportunities. If the program is strong, then I imagine there should be ample choices when you are looking for work after graduation, since people in the field know which programs are good. Is your concern that there might not be a great deal of job opportunities for your specialty if you want to stay in Singapore after graduation? If so, and there are not too many openings in the area, then yes, I imagine you might have to move again for your new job after finishing school.

Hey, thank you for the video. Do you think it is better for someone who is not sure that he/she wants a research career yet, to work for some years before deciding to go to graduate school? I mean, does someone need to be 100% sure before making that decision? Also, do you believe it is better for someone to do a research Master's before deciding whether to do a PhD or not? Thank you in advance.
@bonchonjonjon3 ай бұрын
I don't think you need to be 100% sure on a research career if you want to enter graduate school, but you have to at least know you enjoy research, especially with multi-year PhD programs. Some people I know work between undergrad and grad, while others go straight through, and that's a matter of personal choice. A masters is a shorter commitment to see if you enjoy research since its usually just two years, and might be a good way to experiment whether this kind of work is your cup of tea. However, it's not necessary though to do your Masters before deciding to do a PhD, and the decision varies person to person.

Nice vid man. Another way I thought of doing this integral which I don't see anyone talk ABT is to 1. Say I=int(e^-x^2,-infinity,infinity) 2. Say I^2= the double integral expression you had on your fourth line of working 3. Recognise that the volume under that plane would be equal to the volume of y=e^-x^2 rotated about the y-axis 4. Set up I^2=π×int(x^2dy,0,1) 5. Solve for x^2=-ln(y) 6. Solve the integral in part 4 and get that I^2=pi and therefore I=√π
@bonchonjonjon5 ай бұрын
Yes you're absolutely right! You're method geometrically takes advantage of the fact that the gaussian function is circularly symmetric. It also gives more intuition as to why we get a pi in our final solution. Thanks for sharing!
